Particularly, the WW1 ships. Do they come with Photo etch? How good are they compared to say WEM. << Simon, I assume you mean "HP Models" and not "HB Models". As far as I know, the kits are all resin and none come with any photoetch. I think you'll hear mixed feelings about their kits from various people. I have five of their kits (all WWII ships) and the quality is a mixed bag ranging from great to ok. Some of their earlier releases are somewhat lacking but their recent stuff has really improved and is very very good. I would not rate them at the same level as Waveline or WEM, but they are certainly very buildable. The biggest issue you'll find is that some of the smaller pieces (searchlights, light AA, etc) may be next to impossible to extract from the resin wafers they are molded in, so in many cases need to be replaced from spares or scratchbuilt. But the hulls and deck levels are usually very finely molded. Overall, I am really impressed with the range of kits they offer and personally don't mind a little extra work on my part to build a nice looking model. My advice would to ask around about specific ships you are interested in and see what people say. Also ask yourself if a little extra work on your part is acceptable in return for a model of a ship that you really want that no other company may ever offer in the near future? Regards, Yohan Fernando -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: RLapadura@aol.com Subject: Re: Japanese DD Markings I too, have seen the photo of Akizuki with her name still on her hull, and yes, I agree that she probably lost this just before or soon after commissioning. I wonder if this remained a common practice, or if Akizuki was completed at an "in between" period. Does anyone know of a Matsu class destroyer photographed on her speed trial, and whether she has any hull markings? Bob LaPadura -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Gordon E. Hogg" Subject: HMS ILLUSTRIOUS in 1:700 Werner: To apply details to the earlier response on this idea: There is/was an Aoshima 1:700 kit released as both VICTORIOUS and ILLUSTRIOUS, either of which would save you a lot of time and conversion trouble. That way you could take on the bold challenge of crafting the UNICORN from a very surprised and unsuspecting ARK ROYAL. At any rate, I can give details on the kit(s) if you contact me offlist. Did somebody say Scale Ship Modeler's spirit lives?! I learned a lot of my craft from SSM. But, man would I like to get all my plans and original photos back. After their founding editor left the company, they really got goofy. The idea that a publisher would promise payment and not deliver, then refuse to return your original material after publication galls me. Although I compete with them, I was secretly happy to see SSM cease publication after they said, "You're starting a magazine? You can't screw us like that...we'll bury you!" Har Har, Karmic justice is sweet... But, that said, there is no finer publication than the Nautical Research Journal. If you're into deep reserarch, and plans reproduced nicely with well done articles by guys who care about history, you must obtain a membership in the Nautical Research Guild. They even throw an annual conference that, by all accounts, is smashing! I can tell you that the people who produce the Nautical Research Journal are all volunteers except for the editor who receives a stipend for his work. Due to the nature of their organizational make-up, they can't recoup all their costs from ad revenue and the costs to publish and distribute a good journal are prohibitive. Personally speaking, I have an opportunity to receive a gratis professional subscription to NRJ but still send in my membership dues annually because I really believe in and support this fine organization's effort to preserve our maritime heritage. A roll of ordinary tape (30 metres) only costs at about 2euro (that is about 2 US dollar) << I too have had no problems with the above tape, though maybe not 30 feet. I use this "yellowish" masking tape primarily for clamping and larger area masking. For less of an edge from the tape, I use Scotch Brand Magic Tape(clear/milky in color) by 3M. They are cheap, available everywhere, work great and have had no problems yet. Justin Richard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: No Uss Arizona From Trumpeter >>> The part that surprised me is that there was a Hasegawa sticker on the side with a Hasegawa part number. Why would that be there? <<< Could be the way the importer for Oz choose to do his stock control. Could you scan and send it to me? << If I remember correctly, the 1/350 Arizona was a joint project financed by Hasegawa and Marco Polo, Hasegawa's main US importer, and sold under the Banner name. For what it is worth, Banner is the only name that appears on the two models that I have. I got them from the local hobby shop, who ordered them from Stevens. Mike Settle -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "ebrown" Subject: WEM Lance & Milne WEM seem reluctant to release these kits, although I believe the masters have existed for some time. Perhaps that is the problem as the quality of their offerings keeps improving with each new release. However, I dont care if they lack detail, that just gives me more room for input in the finished article. Also the L & M Classes consisted of 16 ships. If there is lack of detail this could be an advantage in building L & M's other than Lance & Milne. Why restrict yourself to only one of each? Terry Wiltshire is waiting, I am waiting and I suspect that there are others who are also waiting. It may be a good idea to let WEM know if you are interested. If I am right in believing the masters exist they have already suffered an outlay without return. If enough potential buyers surface they might go the final yard - soon. Edward Brown -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: HAZEGRAYADM@aol.com Subject: Re: Tamiya 1/350 USS Fletcher Guns Re: Terry Wiltshire on Fletcher Turrets. The Tamiya kit's main gun housing has a reasonably accurate profile for the upper/02 level turrets (# 52 to 54). The lower turrets (51 & 55) roof need an additional bevel forward, the difference betw the Mk 30s (Mods 18 & 30, resp.). The top/front view on all of the kit turrets is indeed incorrect in their being concentric. While the barrels were centered over the barbettes, the turrets had an offset to their left side as shown in many photos. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to remedy this mistake; the only way I've come up with is to add a shim to the left side before adding the left side plate (Part D-11). If he were I am sure he would have a different attitude toward the organization, and its highly acclaimed quarterly publication, the Nautical Research Journal. The NRG provides many services to model builders, researchers, and historians, including annual conferences and assistance to members to name two. The entire organization. functions, and services are spelled out on the web site at www.Naut-Res-Guild.org The NRG is a not-for-profit IRS registered organization with an international membership. Authors in the Journal include the top in the field as well as beginners. It is an honor and privilege to be published there, with no compensation.
