Any ideas of where to find them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Duane Fowler -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: Books can be deceiving John Rule's e-mail surprised me in that I though that the marvelous Italian series from Uffico Storico Della Marina was long out of print. I have a number of these amazing books starting with Le Navi di Linea Italiane (battleships), Gli Incrociatore Italiane (cruisers and a real gem), Esplatori Fregate Corvette ed Avvisi Italiane (scouts, frigates etc. - John's purchase), Le Torpediniere Italiane (torpedo boats but really small destroyers) and I Cacciatorpediniere Italiani (destroyers). The ones on cruisers and scouts are 400+ pages while the others are smaller at 300+. These are all official Government publications and, when I bought mine, were incredible value for the money. Lots of photos and beautifully drawn plans. Unfortunately I do not have their address but "Ufficio Storico della Marina Militare, Rome" would probably find them. On some boats, the decka & other horizontal surfaces were black. As the war continued, the black was extended to the sides as well, so that vessels appeared to be overall black well there goes many kit manufacturers that say piant your sub decks tan or something doesn't it!? there are a coupel of line drawings in this books on japanese ships Mogami 1939 - 1942 Seaplane tender Akitsushima weird & wonderful pattern of pale green, black green & mottled black green Typical tanker dark grey & lightgrey Late war carrier pattern 2 ship patern small ship painted against larger ship Zuikaku dark green & weathered woden deck & dark grey lifts & some diferent expamples of merchant ship patterns this book also covers other warships USN, RN, German navy, regia marina, Japanese, french, polish (no drawings),dutch (no drawings), soviet (kirov, gremyaschiy 1944, razyaryonni 1942, Trail class minesweeper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: Canada's subs leak canada's decision to buy 4 cut price subs from britain looked a little soggy on Thursday after one of the vessels sprang 2 leaks on its very first training exercise. The sub was in no danger but the problem was a further embarrassment for a purchase that is becoming a public relations nightmare.. The HMCS windsor is one of 4 mothballed diesel powered subs that was bought from Britain in 1998 for $750m canadian dollars & then started to refit. water had leaked into a hydrolic system used to operate a snorkel mast that lets fresh air into the boat, that's when the boats commander decided to return to base. To round off a bad day, someone then flipped the wrong switch and let 2,000 litres of sea water into a sealed battery compartment. Media reports said sailors used yogurt containers and sleeping bags to clear up the mess. When the windsor made its way to canada last year, the defese ministry allowed a team from public broadcaster CBC tv along for the ride. for a start the submarne leaked hydraulic fluid throughout the journey, then the radar mast leaked & had to be fixed with masking tape & a garbage bag, the sonar broke & another faulty piece of equipment had to be unjammed with a hockey stick this is a real report I got off Reuters..well at least our collins are not the only troubled subs or ships.. I remember having a drink with the office next door one of their friends sailed on HMAS Anzac only just after commission they had a leak that went thru the entire ship...water from a pipe burst & it spread thru the entire length of the ship...i think it was caused by metal mismanagement brass & some other kind of metal one doesn't expand as quickly as the other so it breaks... the guy said they had to use towels to soak up all the dampness from behind every little nook & cranny... & then on an open day on new minesweeper I heard one of the crew opening complaining about the gun how to cut costs the gun was not slaved into the radar so the gun is only operated under manually aimed control... then I recall being told about the gun on the ANZAC frigates to cut costs the navy had to buy steel shells or brass yet one was too big for the gun breach, so each time they had to head out, the gunners manually modified the shell with files to make it fit..on an open day I asked a gunner about this & he said there was some problems with the shells but it was only a temporary thing as the Navy didn't have any shells so they had to buy some stock from some other navy .. when will govt's learn & not try to cut costs or hack projects to pieces..they never seem to learn....sigh -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Books can be deceiving >> WRONG!!!! It arrived today. It's 11.5" x 10", is hardback, weighs 5lb, has about 430 pages, is filled with photos, large scale drawings and colour profiles. As I say, "Books can be deceiving." This book is a mindblower. << John, The suspense is killing me!!! Could you please indulge us poor uninformed ones (hint, hint) with the exact content of said book??? Waiting with a drool bucket, Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: USS Barry Repaired The former destroyer Barry (ex-DD 933) has reportedly been repaired and reopened to the public at its berth at the Washington Navy Yard. Towing the ship to Norfolk to be scrapped was estimated to cost over one million dollars, and it proved cheaper to effect repairs on-site, according to the museum's spokesman. The overhaul is expected to keep the ship afloat for several more years.
