Mike Donegan NAVYDAZE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Robert Healy" Subject: Re: USS BARRY Reference the USS Barry at the Washington Navy Yard, she has been repaired and been open for a while. I was part of a change of command ceremony that took place last October aboard her. One of the crew mentioned that some areas are still off limits, I don't know if it has anything to do with the leak. Regards, Bob Healy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Scott Weeks" Subject: Re: Canada's Subs Leak >> another faulty piece of equipment had to be unjammed with a hockey stick << I am sorry but that is too funny, the fact that they had a hockey stick on board. Is that standard equipment allowance? Any ideas of where to find them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. << Duane, Most US ships do not display their own crests, but rather the crest of their Squadron. An exception is Perry Class FFG, which in many cases do display their own crests. (Do a websearch on Ship Crests US Navy - there is at least one site out there with mosts of the crests). Many times, Squadron crests can be found on the individual websites for the ships (this is especially so for Tico Class CG and Burke Class DDG) - oftentimes in the Gallery of ship pictures. Where the ship does not have a webpage or their Squadron crest pictured, it is fairly easy to do a search of Battlegroups, find out which ship is in what group and then go to that webpage. Hope this helps a little. Any ideas of where to find them? << On British ships, you could check RN websites for the ships themselves. US Ship crests are rarely, if ever, displayed on the outside of the ship on a permament basis. What you see the sides of US ships are Squadron or Division insignia. Most of the Pacific Coast DESRON and CRUDESDIV Markings are available from their websites, but I have found the colors can vary from what is on the ship. If there is something specific you need, contact me off list and I can search my collection. Most Atlantic Fleet websites have been down since late last year because of increased security concerns in that command. In most cases you'll be able to find the crests on these pages. Good hunting! Please, please put them in a CNC machine or whatever you do to them and issue them in 1/700. Skiers wear a locator (don't know the technical details) so that should they be buried by an avalanche searchers with the proper equipment can find them under the snow. For people on ships perhaps some sort of wrist band radar transponder should be available for those who want it and should the wearer fall overboard, or a swimmer swept away the wearer should be able to be quickly located by airborne radar equipped rescue parties. The woman overboard story also reminds me of a newly married couple who went scuba diving with one of those charter tour boats to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Their preference was to stay away from the pack and so their presence didn't really register in any one's mind including the boat's skipper. When the boat pulled anchor for the day no one noticed their absence until the boat had already docked and by then already several hours had elapsed. The couple was diving on the oceanic side of the Reef where the tides were very strong. Their bodies were never found despite a frantic S&R effort. Our Australian SMMLies should be able to fill in the details. Kelvin Mok -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Canada's sub leak >> To round off a bad day, someone then flipped the wrong switch and let 2,000 litres of sea water into a sealed battery compartment. << I am puzzled. What function would such a switch and the water inlet serve? Was it a command centre switch. Was that sea water or the sub's drinking water? If sea water imagine the same accident happening at max dive depth. A prudent design feature would be to make it as difficult as possible that such an accident could happen, like requiring two interlock switches to be activated or, a mechanical device requiring considerable force or manipulative steps so that you consciously must really want to open it. Just out of interest if the film is screened have a good look at the Cumberland as she comes steaming up at the end of the film and you will note she is minus all her main 8 inch turrets! I don't know how the film boys thought they could get away with it. Tom has a pretty good selection of ship's patches, which are essentially the ship's crests. Could you please indulge us poor uninformed ones (hint, hint) with the exact content of said book??? Waiting with a drool bucket, << Steve, I see your question has already been answered, but if you want to find copies of these books, a quick Google Search gives: http://www.marina.difesa.it/uffstorico/catalogo/cat02.htm Looks like a new printing of the Battleship book is being prepared, the Cruiser, Scout and MAS books are available. For the MAS book, I know the success at Suda (HMS York presumably), but what was the tragedy at Malta? (No, I don't read Italian, but the meaning seems clear) Regards Richard Simpson www.ausbg.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Jim McNeil" Subject: Re: Canada's subs leak ref message in vol1576 on Canadian Sub accident, the water was not in the battery compartment but in the compartment above it.The Battery compartment is water tight with a screw down hatch, althought the water tightness ultimately depends on the integrity of the rubber seal. The crew put on breathing apparatus until the water was cleared out. This was a switch in the wrong possition. My understanding is that the hydraulic leak in an exterior system will be repaired over the weekend and she will be back to sea next week. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Shane Subject: APMA site & Meeting update G'day all, The APMA site has been updated with approx 200 new photos added to the members models, display days and references.
