Comes with the aforementioned U-Boats plus the two halfs of a freighter. I'm not sure of it's current availability. << I think it is still available...I think 1 or 2 (or maybe more) shops that belong here, have it on their lists -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Marc Flake Subject: Re: Steve's new book I'll cast my vote for: Enterprise (or Yorktown Class) Marc Flake -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: Re: ACF V3 Al, Just as the French have combined into one set their books on Jean Bart et al, consider selling volume 3 not only individually, but as a box set with 1 and 2. Doug Wilde -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "John Rule" Subject: And theres more! >> Just yesterday they e-mailed me to say that they were on line, and invite a visit to www.dockmusrum.org.uk << I see Mr Lambert must have attended the same school as Mr Raven, where naval studies may have been a high priority but spelling was not. The last time I looked museum was spelt with an "e" not an "r". Thanks for the heads up anyway John. John Rrrrrule -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: donald p morgan Subject: Casualty count, U.S. Merchant Marine...W.W.II I am in the midst of preparing a fair sized ship model display for the local U.S. Navy Training Center Family Day bash and I'm in need of some info. These folks like to have something historical, and my collection of 1/1200 scale ship models seems to fill the bill for them. This year I plan on showing a typical North Atlantic convoy, with a U-boat "wolfpack" and a shadowing "hunter-killer" group of destroyer escorts and a "jeep" carrier. I usually have a few explanatory posters accompanying the diorama, and this year I wanted to list some information on numbers of vessels lost, numbers of crewmen lost, and that includes not only Allied losses, but Kriegsmarine losses as well. A friend of mine here in San Antonio has come up with some good figures on the U-boat losses and their crews, and on the British Merchant Marine, but to date, I haven't been able to find anything on losses of American merchant ships and the total number of merchant marine crew casualties. Can anyone out there in SMML land help me?? Time is running short but I only have to make the posters and the preparations will be finished. Please e-mail me direct at: donaldpmorgan@juno.com Thanx Don Morgan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "DKurtz@Ameritech.net" Subject: Minas Geraes class I'm looking for info on the Minas Geraes class, as well as Brazilian naval history in general. References on the ships, plans, etc. I've found basic info, small scale drawings and some photos online, but would love to see more details about these ships. Does anyone have any suggestions? ddk -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Dixie - CW books Yup I would buy that one - I like the idea of doing all the big ADs, ARs, ASs and AVs. They are really big ships and usually dwarfed the ships they services. I think it would be an interesting story. Not too many of them left either (the WWII version), I think we have a couple here in Susiun (never could spell that). And one up in Puget Sounds I think as a barracks ship. Sorry, I was drifting there - but yes I think it would be a good idea to include the auxiliaries - lots of ex crewmembers and potential buyers. Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: gil.angie.alden@juno.com Subject: Russian subs Does any of you master modelers know of a company which produces LARGE scale modern Russian Submarines in static display. I am particularly interested in The Akula and Oscar Classes in 1/125 or bigger. Thanks G. Alden -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: comments of Geo. Sinkankus >> So Mr. Wiper, any book (Or booklet) you wish to produce would be a buying item for me but try to include the WW II Essex class please. << Burt, Because of the Trumpeter, or what ever name they are marketing under, kit of the short hull Essex in 1/350 due out late this year, I plan on doing, you guessed it, a soft bound book on the Essex class, you guessed it again, covering the short hull variants. Thanks, Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "T. Stephen Rogers" Subject: Kingfisher upgrade >> Wondering about the old Monogram 1/48 Kingfisher kit ... what's the consensus on its accuracy? I seem to remember some sort of problem with the main float. What needs to be done to make the kit more accurate? << The source to get accurate detailing parts for this kit can be found at Meteor Productions. http://www.meteorprod.com/ Check for the "Cutting Edge" product line for the interior, engine cowling, and accurate floats. "Engines and Things" product line includes the correct engine. The end result is a bit pricey but the results are spectacular. Reviews are available on either Hyperscale or Modeling Madness as best I remember. Steve Rogers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Chris.Evenden@ga.gov.au Subject: LCT 6 Hi all, In the Squadron Signal book on Armour in Korea, there is a photo of three Pershing tanks on what I beleieve is an LCT 6 loading up for Inchon. Floating Drydock has a plan for a 1943 LCT 6 in their TFW series. Is this the same basic design for a 1950 version? I wish to model one in 1/35 scale. Thanks, Chris -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Looking for good Airship/Zeppelin drawings Does anyone on this list have, or know where I can get good drawings on any of the US Navy airships or of the German Zeppelins of W.W.I or the Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg. I am looking for high quality drawings with lots of detail sections and cross sections. Thanks, Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: paulship37@aol.com Subject: Interesting items on eBay I saw these items for sale at eBay BRITISH AUSTRALIA CONVICT SHIP 1912 BOOK http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1523291722 Great Australian Ships ~ 150+ Illst H/B Sign! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1523444453 Fighting Ships of Australia & New Zealand, 1973-1974 Edition by Graeme Andrews, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1523464638 30 rare photograph postcards of RMS Titanic http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1083570709 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Re: ACF V3 Hip! I pause to bask in your glory. I have 3 questions. 1) Will the Denny steam gunboats be in this volume? 2) When will you be doing the German and Italian volumes? 3) When we may we pre-order (Snicker! Snicker!)? Chuck Duggie (starting to save my pennies) WoodenWalls Listmeister eGroups : WoodenWalls Naval wargamer, amateur naval historian, and ship modeler -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: PXGOLLIN@ctrl.co.uk Subject: Suggestions for Classic Warships books Putting two of the previous threads together - suggestions for Classic Warships' future books and the excessive costs of getting photos out of British sources - leads to a suggestion that Classic Warships could put together a photo album (from US sources) showing RN warships in US ports and being overhauled/refitted. In addition, another area not really covered by others would be port scenes (both naval and merchant marine) showing typical activities such as loading/un-loading, drafts joining and leaving ships, re-supplying, re-ammunitioning, etc..... Good luck on whatever is decided. Phil -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Victor M. Baca" Subject: Reviews >> ...and so forth. The best reviews (of models, movies, cars) don't just say "buy this" or "it sucks". The best reviews tell us about the product, identify shortcomings and strengths and leave it to the reader. << I wrote a two-page review recently on the old Hasegawa hospital ship kit, Hikawa Maru. It was a neat old 1980s era kit, maybe not fully up to today's product, but you have to look at these things in their own time period and circumstances. The reader (hopefully) came away with an idea of the kit's weak points as well as its very good qualities, along with tips on how to improve the masts and lifeboats. In a review, I also like to give the modeler some research info to assist with the kit in the form of a feature running right after the piece. Maybe some plans, pix of the prototype or book reviews germaine to the subject matter. In our next issue for instance, we look at the superb Len Jordan 1/1250 kits of the T2 Tanker and Liberty Ships. That two-page review is followed by one page on books pertaining to the subjects: one in print and one dating back to the '40s. The books chosen were ones that not a lot of guys may be aware of. We also ran a set of plans scaled to Jordan's kit to show an unarmed variant of the Liberty Ship for the kit bashers to play with and finally followed that with a page of outstanding shots Kurt Greiner took of the preserved Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'brien. The idea is to give something more than saying, "Here's the kit and here's what I think about it." It also gives material for modelers to use regardless of the scale they choose for the subject (doing a 1/700 or 1/96 Liberty, for instance). If a company is going to take the risk and effort to put forth a particular model, the least we can do is bolster our assessment with good followup info for the modeler.
