Landing craft (LCVP, LCT ect) would be a close second (:^> Bob Evans -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: ACF V3 >> Just as the French have combined into one set their books on Jean Bart et al, consider selling volume 3 not only individually, but as a box set with 1 and 2. << Interesting idea, but John and I have no control over how the books are marketed. You might want to send your comments to John Lee at Conway - JLee@chrysalisbooks.co.uk Al Ross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: ACF V3 Hip! Hip! HORRAY!! >> I blow kisses in the general direction of your feet. I pause to bask in your glory. << Eeeeasy, hoss! ... :-} >> I have 3 questions. 1) Will the Denny steam gunboats be in this volume? 2) When will you be doing the German and Italian volumes? 3) When we may we pre-order (Snicker! Snicker!)? << 1) I can't remember - ask John L. 2) Probably never - as much as I like both types, I'd rather do "Brown Water Navy" types and crashboats (in that order) first 3) Contact John Lee - JLee@chrysalisbooks.co.uk Al -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SantMin@aol.com Subject: Re: airships >> Does anyone on this list have, or know where I can get good drawings on any of the US Navy airships or of the German Zeppelins of W.W.I or the Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg. I am looking for high quality drawings with lots of detail sections and cross sections. << Steve, I have a number of airship books that I inherited from a friend. "UP SHIP, US Navy Rigid Airships 1919-1935" has some really good drawings, and does "Hindenburg, an Illustrated History". "Airships, an Illustrated History" is loaded with photos and drawings but not interior drawings. This one has every airship up to 1972 all drawn to the same scale. Bob Santos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: AAA Hobby Subject: Re: Minas Geraes class The Minas Gerais is a highly modified Colossus class carrier. The mods include an 8.5o angled deck, Fresnel system, new elevators, steam catapults, modernized island and electronics, removal of most AA mounts - still had 2 40 mm Quad w/radar and 1 40 mm Twin when last in service. Heller did a kit of the Arromanches which had been the Colossus and is a good kit of this class during the war. I suppose it would be the easier "modern" version to built, the Viraat (Centaur class) or Vikrant (Majestic class) could both be built by modifying the Heller kit, but are a real pain to do according to the guy who did it! Other ships that can be modified and built from this kit include the Argie Indepencia & 25 de Mayo, Austrailian Sydney, Vengeance or Melbourne, etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Richa5011@aol.com Subject: Re: Looking for good Airship/Zeppelin drawings Steve wrote: >> Does anyone on this list have, or know where I can get good drawings on any of the US Navy airships << One of the Transactions of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers from the 1930s had detailed drawings, sections, structural drawings, etc, of one of the USNs designs...I believe it was the Akron/Macon design. I'll have to do my home work as to exactly which year...but it was somewhere in the mid-30's. Nat Richards -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Chris Hughes" Subject: Re: Kingfisher float I think that there has been some confusion over the Monogram kit float and the float on a restored example, located somewhere in the USA as I recall... I think the explanation I read was that the Monogram kit was based on genuine drawings/plans, but the restoration made do with a close proximity to a genuine float, an example of which was unavailable to the restorers. The comparisons were made and some fell into the trap of thinking that the kit was incorrect! If I'm talking rubbish, I'm sure I'll be corrected! Cheers, Chris -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Painting Question I pull out my "new" ship kits to look at them once in a while because I have too many other things to do to work on them at this time. It just crossed my mind that I may be able to save some time and perhaps make the task of painting small parts easier by painting them as-they-are out of the box. My concern is having to mask off those teeny deck fixtures, on say Tamiya's 1/30 Missouri, something I dread doing on an assembled model. I will of course mask off all the to-be-glued surfaces first. After gluing the paint on the assembled model will need only be touched up at selected spots. Then I will have avoided the problem of having to mask off lots of itsy bitsy bits in a fully assembled model. This is a "thought experiment." Any comments on such a method of painting? Kelvin Mok -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Reynaga, Tim@EDD" Subject: Re: Torpedoed merchant ship Rod, You're right-don't go and hack up that Skywave Liberty! The sinking merchantman you're looking for is part of Hasegawa's 1/700 scale German Type VIIc/ Type IXc U-Boats set. It is an old kit (first issued in the 1970s) but still widely available. It'll set you back maybe ten or fifteen bucks. The merchantman doesn't appear to represent any specific vessel, just a generic ship in distress. I did one awhile back. The U-Boats are delicately done and the dying merchantman makes for a dramatic display. A great combo kit, I recommend it most highly. Good luck with it, Tim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Ralph Batykefer" Subject: Re: Looking for good Airship/Zeppelin drawings Hey Steve, Here is the Windjammer Site that has many drawings at very good prices. They have some airships... http://wja1992.safeshopper.com/50/cat50.htm?163 IHS, Ralph Batykefer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "David and Alison Muir" Subject: Re: Zeppelin drawings Nexus (nee Model and Allied Publications, owners of the old Scale Models Mag) used to have 1/192 drawings of the P and R type Zeppelins in their range (Plan 2972 and 2982 respectively). I think they also did a barrage baloon and a later airship (Hindenberg?)...have copies of the latter somewhere but not the former. Have tried to get copies if their car drawings (yes, I do other models...grin) without success so cannot help with a source. David M Sydney, OZ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: german translation I got my HP kit of the Greif in the email this morning, looks nice except being all in German so if there is anyone who speaks german or has built these kits, if you could translate id appreciate it Rumpf: (I hope this doesn't mean RUMP,lol) my guess going by the colour box art/pic is this is the hull? Aufbauten: my guess again is the super structure above the hull Deck: well derrr the deck, but does this inculde all horizontal surfaces Schornstein-Kappen: is that the water line mark? or is the funnel tops? thanks Andrew Oz -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: Dutch close beach to disarm German WW2 submarine "reuters..Amsterdam march 14 - Dutch authorities sealed off a beach northwest of Amsterdam on Thursday to clear dangerous torpedoes from a German Submarine that ran aground just offshore in WW2. It will take several weeks to remove the torpedoes carried by the small "seehund" submarine, a spokeswoman for authorities in the nearby town of Bergen said. A salvage company will have to build a wall in the sea around the vessel before the 600kg explosive haul can be cleared away. An area with a radius of 1,800 metres will be cordoned off during the operation. Local authorities decided to disarm & remove the torpedoes after the Dutch navy described the situation as very dangerous, partly due to recent earth tremors in the area. The exact location of the submarine has to be determined and then a sheet pile wall will be built around the submarine. After that the torpedoes can be disarmed. The Seehund submarine set off from the northern part of the Netherlands on feb 21, 1945 to charge allied transport ships in Belgium's Oostende harbour but was attacked before accomplishing its mission and ran aground" I hope they intend to salvage the seehund & not just blow the thing to pieces..It would make another good museum piece..i think there is only 1 or 2 in the world..in a museum in Germany & the other in London I think..well only time will tell, maybe to cut the risk of the navy teams they will say just blow it up..
