It is being sent Monday. I will gladly do an inbox review. But we all know it will be good coming from Tamiya. cheers, Graeme Martin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Frank Allen Subject: Re: Tamiya 1/700 Prinz Eugen- pics & info For basic information and photos of the new Tamiya 1/700 scale Prinz Eugen, see Tamiya's website at: http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/31805prinz_eugen/prinz_eugen.htm Excellent kit. Just as good as the retooled Yamato. Now if they would only release a 1/700 Bismarck so that the horrible Aoshima kit can finally be put out of it's misshapen, tool-marked, sink holed misery... Gene asked: >> I know this is sort of a tangential topic, but it does deal with a USCG C-130 (ok I confess, I also do "winged" things, sigh). Heller has a 1/72 kit of the C-130 in USCG livery and it is much less expensive than any other 1/72 C-130 kit. Know any reason? Is it really an inferior product or are the other 1/72 kits out there so very much better? I am working on a USCG program at the moment, and felt there is a small waterish tie-in, please forgive me for being so brash. << It is probably the older (but still not too bad) Airfix kit. In 1/72, you have a choice between this kit and the Italeri kit--you'll need to come up with USCG decals for the latter, though. Neither kit (IMHO) is that terribly bad.....YMMV, though. If the price is right for your budget, go for it.... Bailey Dave Riley posted >> In response to this request, I would like to see something representative of the Cold War destroyer activity. My preference would be something like a FRAM 1 destroyer doing something routine like planeguarding or combined ASW ops. This year is the 100th anniversary of destroyers. << Have you seen Charles Roach's "Coming into the Wind"? It shows the USS Waddell (DDG-24) in the foreground, running to get on back on station as the Enterprise turns into the wind to begin an aircraft recovery evolution. FWIW - since it is the Centennial year of the US Destroyer Force - my preference would be something to commemorate the pre-WWI destroyers. Our library's collection of SNAME Transactions is missing the 1930s (rats). However, in 1922, volume 30, one finds... "The Longitudinal Strength of Rigid Airship" by William Hovgaard. IIRC, there are a number of drawings associated with this paper. You also might take at look at the Christian-Schmidt site. Drop them an e-mail about Zeppelins. I thought I once saw plans in a catalog. Doug Wilde -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: New Painting by C.S. Doug Wilde -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Derek Wakefield Subject: Re: Minas Gerais, Arromanches, Karel Doorman John Can't tell you where to find one, as I've been trying to find the Heller Arromanches kit myself to do a Canadian Bonaventure. However, I seem to recall someone mentioning that OzMods in Austraila was planning to do a Melborne at one time. I believe they said it would be in 1:350, but I've slept since I last heard that rumor ^_^. The possibility of a real model of the "tin-can opener" had me drooling a few years back. I feared though the price would be excessive. I've been facinated with these delightful little carriers since high school. There's something about the simplicity of their design that grabbed my attention and still holds it to this day. My personal fav is the Canadian HMCS Bonaventure. Maybe, in part, it's because it's the only "North American" variant of the Colossus/Majestic (C/M) class. Moreso, I think it had to do with the unique design of the Bonnie's island/funnel and the fact the RCN chose to use US 3-in/50-cal AA guns (one of my favorite weapon mounts). The first image I ever saw of the Bonnie was the plan in (I believe) the 67-68 JFS. The subtile differences struck a chord in me, and from then on, the Bonnie was my fav of the class. Unfortunately, the prob with the C/M's though is similar to that with the US Essex's. TMV (Too Many Variations) for any one kit to cover all the bases. If we can't find a firm willing to do kits of the more renown and popular Essexes, what chance do us fans of the more historically obscure C/M cl ships have. I'd love to find a 1:700 kit of the Bonnie. The odds of ever finding one in 1:350 seems to much to ever ask for. Too bad there isn't a Canadian equivalent of WEM that might produce one. Thus, an Arromanches conversion seems to be the only choice. I believe someone here said awhile back that a gent used this kit to produce a Bonnie, so it's possible (but would require a bit of work). To date though, I haven't been able to locate one of these kits, so I'm not sure if it's even in production anymore. The only qualm I have on my end there is I'm not really that much of a 1:400 scale fan (not enough aftermarket goodies out there IMO to spruce things up). These days, if it's not 350 or 700, you're sorta sunk. For example, trying to locate F-2 Banshees, S-2 Trackers, and SH-34s - not to mention the 3/50s - needed for the Bonnie in this scale is gonna be a buggerbear of a task. I suppose that's why this project has ended up low on my agenda.
