Subchasers I have responded to the recent request for WW 2 110 Ft. Sub Chasers, information off line, but take this opportunity to continue to solicit from SMML any information and/or leads about WW 1 110 Ft, Ft. Sub Chasers, those of the 1918-1919 era. This is a continuation of my ongoing efforts to gather (and share) material on this specific class of U.S. Naval vessels. I have found SMML to be a valuable source, and hope this trend will continue. I am appreciative of the fact that SMML subscribers, and others, have helped me to make my 1:48 model a much better representation than was possible with the scanty information I had at hand when I started the model in 1934 (yup, 19 thirty four, finished in 2002), even though it meant considerable renovation to ensure "correctness". Thanks. Franklyn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Franz Aigner GmbH" Subject: pictures of IJN planes and ships, early 20s John McGregor posted a link on j-aircraft.com to: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/AirspeedNews/nippomgo.html Shows planes and ships (in aerial view) in the years after WW1 (yes, one). Go there and enjoy. Thank you, John -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: IJN Kagero references >> Looking for books/drawings for IJN Kagero, for use in building the NICHIMO kit. << The best book is the Grand Prix book on IJN destroyers. This can be found at Pacific Front Hobbies @ www.pacificfront.com The Nichimo kit is good, so a drawing of the version that the kit is in is not needed, but if you want to do a late war variant, I would recommend a set of MYCO drawings of Yukikaze in 1/200, again from Pacific Front. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Dboykap@aol.com Subject: Re: IJN Kagero references >> Looking for books/drawings for IJN Kagero, for use in building the NICHIMO kit. Any good ones out there? << Gakken # 19 on the Kagero class is probably the single best reference. There's a magnificent 1/200 build of the late war Yukikaze that's the centerpiece of the book. The Gran Prix Shuppan book on IJN DDs is also very good on particular details. The Kojinsha volume isn't bad either. In the US, try Pacific Front Hobbies, otherwise try Hobbylink Japan. Dan Kaplan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Diodor@aol.com Subject: Re: SCs of World War II Victor, your enthusiasm about SCs and PCs is noteworthy and timely. Microglass is now offering a model WWII subchaser hull with plans. The hull is a lightweight laminate of hand laid fiberglass mat, marine-grade resin, and finished in a smooth gellcoat. The scale is 1:32 I've recently updated the Splinter Fleet website and the page "Building a Model Subchaser" has been revised to include several things in addition to the foregoing information. The site has some fairly good photos as well as a cutaway illustration of a subchaser which could be helpful for modelers. This illustration and many additional photos are also in the book "Splinter Fleet". Cutaway prints are available at modest cost. The URL for the Splinter Fleet website is: http://members.aol.com/diodor/splinterfleet In addition, I have a fairly large private photo collection of SCs, some taken by myself and many taken by others. For serious modelers relevant copies can be made available. Ted Treadwell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Arthur Taylor" Subject: Re: Minas Geraes etc On 15 mar. "D. Kurtz" clarified his earlier request for details of Minas Geraes etc. to indicate that he was interested in the "old" Brazilian Navy. Presumably one of our Brazilian colleagues could point the way, say to a national archive (Navy?). Conway's Fighting Ships should be consulted, as should Jane's. Late last year, Jane's Fighting Ships of WW1 was being sold at Barnes and Noble, and has three 1/2 pages on the Brazilian Navy and its ships. According to this, M.Geraes was built at Elswick and sister ship Sao Paulo (sorry, no tilde on my keyboard) at Vickers, presumably at Barrow-in-Furness. Just recently on SMML, someone reported that the Dock Museum at Barrow had archived Vickers-Armstrong's ship records, and gave a web-site which unfortunately I didn't record. Perhaps of more direct interest for a modeler, is a photo in a book "The Visual History of Ships and Sailing" pub. Darling, Kindersley Ltd., London, 1991 (ISBN 1-879431-20-3, Lib. Congress 91-060900). P.52 has a good color photo of the builder's model of MN, with leaders to a great number of the visible features. This model has been described as the finest ("steel" era) warship model ever. Sao Paulo I can remember seeing moored in Recife harbor for a long period of WW2, presumably because the South Atlantic was a dangerous place for any ship because of the threat from U-boats. Once the city was greatly alarmed by a loud explosion, which was later explained as being a practice shoot by the SP. The local joke was that they could get used to this if not too frequent, better than the PA pops music played at full bore by USN ships also moored there, often different tunes from different ships at the same time. Heaven knows what happened to the sailors' ear-drums, but the citizens suffered at the threshold of pain many blocks away! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Pwesty" Subject: USS Alabama museum? Hi List Does anybody know what the heck is going on down at the USS Alabama museum? I have seen pictures of the Uss Drum has been dry dock much like the U-505 and that the Alabama is have coffer dam built around her. Is the old girl sinking or something and was the Drum rusting out or something? Anybody know? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Clary Townsend" Subject: Re: St John's (Newfoundland) visit In regard to St. John's NFLD, do not miss the "Crow's Nest", the Canadian Sea-Going Officer's Club in downtown St. John's. It was the home of the RCN, (Officer's only during WW II ) and to-day, or at least the last time I was there, is filled with artifacts of the RCN, such as original gun shield art etc., the Spike of the Spikenard, driven into the bar by Lt.Cdr.Shadforth, before the Spikenard was sunk on 10/02/42. In one corner is the periscope of the U-Boat that was taken, I believe on VE-Day +/- and escorted to a Newfoundlad Harbour. (sorry I can't remember the boats number or the harbour, just having a Senior Moment!!! ). With the periscope you can have a look about the city. There is not much about modelling, but, you can feel the history. So, sit down in front of the fireplace, have a drink and look around. Good Luck!! C. Townsend -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Henry Blecha Subject: Squadron Subscribers Special For those that might be interested in the "Trumpeter" 1/350th USS Arizona for $11.99. Squadron has been running a Subscriber Special the past couple of days. I ordered nine last night. I have no idea how much longer it the special will run. You can order your Prinz Eugen at the same time!! Henry Blecha -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Henry Blecha Subject: Taiwanese Navy Does anyone know where I might find some photos or other info of Sea Chaparral installed on Taiwanese ships. I think it was destroyers. Thanks Henry Blecha -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Henry Blecha Subject: Contact for RoG missing parts Does anyone have a contact for missing parts from a Revell of Germany kit. I recently purchased the 1/700 USS Wasp and one of the sprue tree's is missing. It is the one with the aircraft. I thought I could do without it, but there are some other parts on the tree that are needed for the build up. The aircraft I can probably get from WEM. Regarding the aircraft. I seem to recall that OV-10's were located on board. Is that true. The kit has AV-8's, Sea Kings (I believe) and Osprey's. Time to check WEM to see if Osprey's and Sea Hawks are available. Thanks Henry Blecha -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Jorgen & Ann" Subject: Re: Journal Attack Hi all, I have been a reader of this list for some time know and have received many good and helpful hints and tips on modeling. But this is the first time I really have felt the urge to write. Haven't felt that I could contribute any more to such a great list. I have just, in the past year started back up modeling with my son. First, I think the FSM article, the April astrology piece was a tongue-n-check APRIL FOOLS article. Second, I was really disappointed to read the remarks about "Journal", it has no place in a list about modeling. If you can't say anything nice then keep it to yourself. I am one that can't afford to subscribe to it but I do appreciate what info I can get of the net. I have been in Advertising for over twenty years and can sympathies with the Editor, its not an inexpensive business, it takes a lot of additional support other then monetary to put any publication together. I must add, that constructive advice or criticisms should be never be used as an attack. Thanks for all the advise from all. Jorgen -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: BECJPARKER@aol.com Subject: Re: Another Seehund spotted The Seehund that use to be at the Navy Yard in DC, now resides in Hackensack NJ at the New Jersey Naval Museum. This example is in poor condition and has been cut open so you can see inside. There is also a Kiaten there. It's an interesting little museum but the exhibits are not in good condition as with all military museums the seem to have a real lack of financial support. They do have a web site at: http://www.njnm.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Ayala Botto" Subject: RN County Class Destroyers Information needed I'm looking for photos, technical information, plans, etc, etc, in order to help to build a Airfix 1/600 HMS Glamorgan. thanks Ayala Botto Lisbon, Portugal -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
