Sorry, I know this has been covered before, but could someone suggest an online seller of display cases please? I am looking for a simple acrylic box type, with a wood base. Nothing too elaborate/expensive. Thanks for the help! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Frank Allen Subject: Rating Bismarcks Hi Einar, Yes, Tamiya is good...that is why I wish they would release a 1/700 Bismarck. Aoshima's was fine for it's day, but needs to be put to pasture. There is the resin 1/700 Bismarck, but I would like to see something a bit more affordable for the average person. Airfix? To be honest, it's been years since I have seen an Airfix Bismarck up close (either scale). Can't really say if it is good or not. Others here could though. I blew up the last one I had with a firecracker (or did I light a snake and melt it in half? I can't remember...) many years ago. I was trying to simulate the way the Denmark Strait battle should have ended up I guess. I am in the Hood camp after all. Now, if you had asked about Hood models...(I'd refer you to the website, LOL). Frank -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Boatbldr Subject: Scratchbuilding software Hi folks One of the things that I regularly mess up and which frustrates the *&8%$%$# out of me is the planking of a hull! The resultant screw up often leaves me without motivation to continue for months and months afterwards! I have read (tried to) the Roberts book on planking and I am utterly confused by all the talk of "spiling", and wider than normal garboards! Ok - scratch building purists, please close your eyes and cover your ears and skip to the next post, what follows will horrify you. So here is the concept - load the hull lines into a CAD program - press the "flatten button" and abracadabra a planking diagram automagically appears. Attach diagram to plywood, cut or scroll saw, and bingo, hull complete. (Or even fancier, send planking diagram to laser cutter or CAM cutter or laser cutting service) Does anyone know of such an animal? Has anyone on this forum written an add on for Autocad or something? Do any of the commercial boat software suites do this kind of thing? regards Boatbldr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Scharnhorst deck question >> 1. Was this area planked with wood or steel strips. 2. If wood, was it a different species? It seems darker in photos. 3. What would be the best material to simulate this on a large model (1/100 scale) that is being otherwise planked with basswood strips? << Kurt, I believe this to have been wood. Also, the planking ran the direction of the anchor chain and not that of the surrounding wood decking. I dont know if it was a different type of wood. I hope you are staining your basswood deck planking with a teak stain??? I've had a rush of enthusiasm and purchased Skytrex's 1:700 HMAS Sydney in white metal, I've just received it and I love it ..... (here comes the but ) but I have no idea how to assemble a white metal model kit... Can anyone point me in the direction of a good "how to" for white metal kits? While I have your attention can anyone point me to a good source of info on how to make castings of small parts, by way of explanation, I also build wnged thingies in 1:48 scale and have "lost" 2 out of 4 cannon barrels on a Hurricane. I thought to take a mould of the surviving pieces and go from there. The cause of the "loss" will be out of traction soon, but may need counselling for quite some time. regards Mark Brayshaw -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: The difference between "Want" and "Need" On many occasions on this message board and in my dealings as a manufacturer/publisher/dealer I have heard conversations discuss the price of items related to this hobby. When one is talking about a 1/350 resin battleship kit at $250.00 plus, I understand why some cannot spend that amount of money. Some people are honest with others and themselves and say that they cannot afford such a price. Others blurt out the item is "Overpriced", which sometimes is true, but most of the time, is just short sightness/stuborness. What I dont understand is when I hear someone say that a $35 magazine subscription is not affordable. If you cannot afford that, then how do you survive??? It cost less than .10¢ per day. Are you standing on a street corner with a sign that says "I cant afford another .10¢ a day, please help"??? This is what I mean about understanding the difference between "Want and Need". You either want it or you dont. You either need it or you dont. Pretty simple. I sometimes (always) look at a pretty woman walking by and WANT to do, well you know..., but I know I dont NEED that (like another hole in my head). That's kinda like WANTING to buy every ship model kit ever made and knowing that that is not what I NEED. What I NEED is a cold shower!!! This is not meant as an attack at anyone, just an observation, with 7 beers as an initiator. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "David Clark" Subject: GLENCOE SUBCHASER I believe that the Glencoe Subchaser kit is available locally for a reasonable price - AUD38 (with the Airfix E Boat going for not less than AUD65). However, I am primarily interested in 1/72 WW2 vessels. I noticed a recent post that mentioned converting the WW1 SCs to WW2 PCs. Is the Glencoe kit amenable to this conversion? I'm happy to live with the slightly smaller scale. David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Enrico Reiser" Subject: Corsair Armada USS Louisville Hello I have acquired this nice kit from second hand but no instructions are provided. Can someone tell me were I can get a copy of the instructions or can someone send me a good copy of it? Thanks. Enrico Reiser -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Ayala Botto" Subject: Cuting the Hull in Airfix HMS Fearless for waterline model Hi, I'm starting to build 1/600 Airfix HMS Fearless, and all my models are waterline. The Fearless Model as Black Waterline in the hull, and the question is where should i cut the hull? How many inches or centimeters from the foward deck to the waterline cut? thanks Ayala Botto Lisbon, Portugal -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: SANDLE Hobbies Subject: Plastic Ship Modeler Hi, SANDLE Hobbies is pleased to announce that we are now stocking Plastic Ship Modeler. If so I sure hope that you include a nice section on her Career in the US Navy as the USS Prinz Eugen (IX-300) << Rich, My book on the Prinz Eugen is one of the next two books to go to the printer in late summer or early fall. I always print two books at the same time to save on printing cost. There will be extensive coverage of her (him) as IX-300.
