These would probably be all resin, with white metal and photoetch, or possibly even with lost wax brass fittings, as they are much more durable. << 1/72 scale would be ideal. Good size to work with and lots of accessory parts available Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: Why a ship is called she >> I believe that I read in Battleship Bismarck: A Survivor's Story by Baron Burkhard von Müllenheim that ether Captain Lindemann or Admiral Lütjens states that Bismarck is too powerful to be considered a she. << Apparently they have never met Lucy Lawless. Rusty White 2003 IPMS/USA National Convention Chairman OKC IN 2003! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: andy vu Subject: ship gender In France, modern warships are masculine: Le Richelieu, Le Strasbourg, Le Montcalme, L'audacieux, etc. The old men-of-war seemed to have names of either gender: Le Soleil Royal, La Belle Poule, etc. Should we really care about ship gender? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Derek Wakefield Subject: SCB-27 & SCB-125 My apologies to those who already know about this. I just found these pages at the USN Naval History Center Site. I suspect there might be a few out there who hadn't stumbled upon this yet, so I thought I'd share. It provides a good basic explanation of the Essex class SCB-27 and -125 mods. http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/usnshtp/cv/scb27cl.htm http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/usnshtp/cv/scb125cl.htm They've added pages for the other Essex's as well. Oddly, I just learned the USN regard the long-hull Essex's as Ticonderoga cl ships. Again, probably nothing new to some here, but I found it interesting.. The only one I was aware of prior to this was a reference in JFS about them being Essex and Hancock cl ships. Seems there is an official USN nomenclature separator here. Derek Wakefield -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Stephen Allen Subject: Re: PT Boat kits Bill While my heart says 1/48, my head suggests 1/72nd scale. There is already a fair selection of coastal forces kits in this scale - recently expanded with the addition of the Revell S-Boote, so any additions will be welcome both for consistency's sake and for conversion/cross-kitting opportunities. 72nd is also a scale that will permit models with quite substantial size at a still reasonable price - some coastal forces subjects such as SCs are already pretty big propositions in 72nd let alone 48th. All resin might still not be the way to go in 72, as there would be some advantages in hollow hulls for superdetailing engine rooms etc. Perhaps a limited run injection hull, bringing the philosophy of Classic Airframes/MPM et al to ship modelling might be the go? As a first kit my vote goes for a Higgins PT so that I have a companion for my Revell PT 560! regards Stephen Allen -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Colour reproductions in publishing >> So, as you can see, when I read some negative comments about something I have produced, I wont hesitate to protect myself and defend my product. I think I do a pretty damn good job and offer a great product at a very reasonable price. I think that I offer some of the best photo reproduction in my books that is comparable to the best in any book, and I do this for $12 to $16, so that they are affordable to anyone. There are 50 to 140 photos in each title. I think that is a bargain. << Whoa Steve, My comments were in no way meant to be a criticism much less a personal one. I love your books and I really got more than my money's worth. Keep them coming. I'll keep buying 'em. I was just musing on the wonders that can be done with a PC these days. Don't know how to use such programs myself and I have the (now) mistaken impression that such capabilities are affordable and easy. I must have seen one too many "techno babble" movies where an impossibly fuzzy low resolution video picture of the elusive terrorist could, after multiple passes through the CIA computer, reappeared to look as if he had his picture taken at a studio. Same awe about astronomy photos and satellite photos of earth where assigning false colours can produce information a B+W print of the same would be almost unreadable. Then there was (is?) that scheme to colourize old Hollywood B+W movies that had many purists up in arms. While my post was not meant to be personally directed at you, you did answer many questions I always had about publishing and image manipulations. Thanks and I do apologize for causing you to spend the time and effort to put up a rebuttal to a "criticism" I had never intended. Kelvin Mok -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Donald Bridge Subject: Re: Leanders >> "Now, who's going to make a Type 12/Leander in 1/700? I'll buy three! << Three?? Original/Broadbeam, Gun/Ikara/Exocet/Sea Wolf Rothesay/Whitby/Yarra/Swan/Van Speijk/President UK/Australia/New Zealand/Chile/India/Netherlands/Pakistan/South Africa I'd need a new mortgage. Don Bridge -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Steve Cowardin Subject: Color Photos Looking at the color photos in Steve Wiper's ... Schnellboote One can't help but imagine the excitement felt by their first viewers, "Hans, It doesn't get any better than this!" Here was a new art form when beautiful ships were deservedly still called "she". It leaves something to the imagination and isn't that what modeling is all about? Thanks, Steve, for fine book. Steve Cowardin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Steve Cowardin Subject: PT Boats and S 38 type Yes, Bill, I would like to see a PT in 1/48, and the 1/72 sound tempting as well. I know the ink is barely dry on their boxes, but, in opening that beautiful S 100 kit, I could not help but wonder if someone would eventually produce a resin/brass kit to convert it to an S 38 type? Steve Cowardin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Henry Blecha Subject: Sea Chaparral (was Taiwanese Navy) This a re-post of a request I had made about a week ago regarding availability of information and photos of Sea Chaparral installed on US and Taiwanese ships. Also interested in what ships were involved. I think it was Destroyers. Thanks Henry Blecha -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: wem Subject: Re: 1945 RN-RCN hull color/wheelhouse interiors & sad gits/1:48 PT Boats, Anyone? 1:72? >> Black-and-white photos of RN and RCN destroyers in 1945 show very dark hull paint, such that the pennant numbers were painted in white. What color was this - dark gray, navy blue, ...? Is a color photo available somewhere on the web? << Hi Mike, Alan Raven may jump in here and correct me, but I suspect the colours were those used in the late war Admiralty Standard schemes that used a dark rectangular panel on the hull. If so, the dark colours would have been, variously, B15 or B20, which were dark blues, and the lighter color would have been G45. >> Sad gits will also require the VHF radio, the clock, and the flare pistol on the bulkhead behind the helmsman. Etched armored covers for the bridge windows could be posed open for the sad git's viewing enjoyment of the interior, using the sad git's other indespensable accessory item: the 1/1 scale penlight. << C'mon Dave, we're working on the flare ammunition (handle with care) and a 1/72 scale penlight now (Duane Fowler has Apple working on the 1/72 scale NiMH batteries for us). ;^) >> I would like to get some feedback and hear about what you think, as I know some of the resin manufacturers might be interested in producing kits. << I love PTs. I love large-scale PTs. However, they wouldn't be cheap. The existing 1/35 scale S-boat kits run in the neighborhood of 300.00+ Pounds, and at that price the market has proved VERY small. Even in 1/48 or 1/72, a PT hull/deck/superstructure is going to use a LOT of resin. One bad casting will cost a manufacturer a good chunk of change. Even in 1/72 scale, even a 77' Elco will be over a foot long, and a 1/48 scale 80' Elco would be 20 inches. That much resin, if cast as a one-piece hull/superstructure, is going to be heavy, with attendant problems up to and including shipping costs. Realistically, it's going to require partially hollowed out castings, and 2-part hull/main deck. Then you start adding photoetch and detail parts.... I suspect that in 1/48, an all-up kit it going to end up at over 200.00 Pounds ($280+), and 1/72 kits would still top 100.00 Pounds ($150 range). I can detail out a LOT of Revell 80' Elcos for that kind of money.
