The Airfix Vosper MTB is another candidate for etched parts like the radar antenna and tube cradles. There is no problem with reference materials on either of these boats, and since there are certain common features to both, e.g. the 2cm Oerlikon, some parts would not have to be re-invented. That Revell PT 109 kit has been a staple since I was a kid. I can remember at least 3 different box tops that it came in. It must sell well. Any of us who have been model railroaders know how indispensible this tool is. I would like to have two: one in metal (which could incorporate 1/400 and 1/600, too, and one in a good stiff clear plastic. I thought someone offered this product in the long ago, but I can't find a reference. << I, as Classic Warships, used to offer both a 1/700 and a 1/350 scale rulers in brass. They were 12in. long with both the English measurements and the scale measurements, one on each side. They are no longer available. This brings up a great idea, I hope!!! In the last week, or two, while working on my built up model of the SMS Goeben, I had the need for a scale ruler with which to measure small curved surfaces. My clear plastic ruler just would not navigate the shapes, as they were tighter than the ruler could bend without breaking. So, in all of my massive brain capacity, came up with the idea to make my own, on my computer, out of paper. They worked beautifully!!! So. My question is. Would all of you out there in SMML'ie Land like to see a set of scale rulers that could be down loaded from the SMML site, with permission of Shane and Lorna of course, for FREE!!!!! If you would like to see this, please respond here on the SMML. If the response is good, then I will draw up a few different scales for the rulers and thy wish shall be done! Steve Wiper Hi Steve, Thank you for this most generous offer. We'll gladly host it. I did not know that Aoshima comes out with super detailed kits. According to my Japanese collegue there is also available the same ship but in 1942 (limited edition)configuration. My question is really do any one of you chaps know how often Aoshima or for that matter any other kit manufacturer come out with special editions ships. Also where can I obtail a list. Its good working for a Japanese company as it makes it a lot easier getting kits in my part of the world. Best regards and many thanks in advance. What ever you do, DO NOT PUSH THAT BUTTON!!! << It is indeed sad that the Goons have gone, but it is clear as noon on a sunny day that they have been reincarnated in many forms from Monty Python to Mr Beam. And lately we have bee most fortunate to evidence that they have crossed the pond and taken hold in such foreign soil. Way to go Steve!!! Tiddly pong. I would have thought that a man of your calibre could have either a) wired up the circuitry to a quartz crystal and battery to make the clock work electronically, or b) assembled a photo-etched clockwork mechanism (1/72 scale, of course) to power it. After all, this is a pretty large scale we are talking about here. ;o) Robert Lockie Swindon UK Release date now deferred indefinitely And it's pretty difficult to model when you aren't allowed any sharp objects. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Re: Russian Aircraft Carriers >> But that brings up another question(s). Were the German-built carriers the first ones in the Russian Navy? Did the Russians procure any subsequent to the German vessels? Given the currently sorry state of the Russian military, I doubt if they have any at the present time. << Hi Franklyn; The Russians aquired the PEDER STRASSER (the second GRAF ZEPPELIN) at the end of WWII. She was (over)loaded with war booty, locomotives and such, and towed to Russia. She capsized on the way. The Russians DID have earlier carriers, much earlier. During WWI the Russians operated a number of seaplane carriers. In the Black Sea they operated combined task forces with seaplane carriers, battleships, cruisers, and destroyers. For example- March 28-30, 1915 the Russian fleet bombarded the mouth of the Bosporus. The fleet was accompanied by 2 seaplane carriers, ALMAZ and NIKOLAJ. "6 seaplanes reconnoitre and bomb the torpedo boat SAMSUN at the mouth of the Bosporus and the coastal batteries; the torpedo boat is not damaged". Information and quotation from page 48 of _The Russian Fleet 1914-1917_, by Rene Gregor. The same book, page 77, lists 7 seaplane carriers for the Black Sea alone. Now let's get harder. The Russian FIRST Pacific Squadron, those at Port Arthur at the start of the war, are harder to figure out. _The McCully Report_, by Newton McCully,USN, gives a description of the Russians as dark grey or "cinnamon" for the larger ships and "dull khaki" for NOVIK, gunboats, and torpedo craft (McCully p.96). At Vladivostok the ships were "cinnamon" for the larger ships and irregular "cinnamon" and white alternating stripes for the torpedo craft, (McCully, page 194). Can anyone give me an idea of the equivalent mixed or bottled paint for these? Preferrably bottled, I hate mixing. I do have a LOT of 1:1200 ships to paint, though. BTW, any chance of the Soviet gray color being at the Nats in Va. Beach? << Only if someone else has 'em there. WEM won't be in attendance due to the high costs of getting to the U.S. with large amounts of stock at the height of the season. Beyond that, I don't know if the Soviet colors will be ready by then. We were just invoiced by the paint company for the IJN colors and B6, so those are close to being in stock. The modern USN/RN/French/German colors have been ordered into production, and I'll add the Soviet colors to that order when they arrive. We'll just have to wait and see what the production times look like. BTW, the grey we'll be producing is the lighter grey used by the Northern Fleet, not the darker one referred to above by Mike Potter. Randy is still working on getting a sample of that.... >> Also, are the Modern Soviet colors going to be included on any of the S&S paint chip sets? << Yes. >> If so, any chance they will be at Va. Beach? << You'll have to check with Randy (rshort@macnexus.org) on that one. I know that he's currently working on getting RN Set 3 made up, but I don't know his production schedule beyond that. >> Okay John - I'm going to need this one too. I've already been contacted to make one of these for an Asiatic Fleet Veterans reunion sometime this fall. Do you have some advance photos of the hull master and the brass. Any suggestions as to how to make the early plexiglass/perspex ball-turret .50 caliber machine gun mounts - or will they be included in the kit? << I've photographed the master and the brass and passed the photos on to Caroline. We'll have to dig 'em up for you. As for the machine gun mounts, I know the guns themselves are on the photoetch fret. As for the plexiglas turret covers, they'd been removed very early on, after sea trials revealed that they fogged up so badly that the gunners literally couldn't see their targets (see also post by Jeff, preceding yours). It just so happens that they are No 1 Ruler with 1/350 and 1/700 scales and the No 2 Ruler is 1/400 and 1/600 scales. The grids are marked out in feet and metres. As yet I am still in the drawing stage, so have no prices on these but hopefully it will not be too long before you see them available. When they do, I would think that they will be on my Atlantic Models label along with the PE folding tools.
