I have a cousin in Croatia who is very talented in wood craft. He has a special interest in making ships and is pretty good with just using his imagination. However, he is trying to find line drawings for ships. I have searched the internet and to no avail. He is not in a position to buy books etc and so my question is do you know of any web sites where these drawings are freely available? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Regards Illona South Africa -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Rod Dauteuil Subject: Sinking Merchant Ship Good Morning, A few weeks ago I posted a query about a sinking merchant ship that was later identified as being part of the Hasegawa U-boat kit. I want to say a big THANK YOU to the several SMMLies who graciously offered me their extra parts. There's a great bunch of people on this list. By the way, Model Expo is having a sale on plastic models. Of course, there are lots of plastic ships, but no resin in this current catalog (code DM203). I ordered the Revell U47 (full hull) for $10.47 (the cutaway version is $9.97--strange, but I thought pricing would be the other way around). Also, the Heller Smit Rotterdam ocean going tug was only $11.98. Lots of cheap planes and armor, too. It proves the more you buy, the more you save. Rod -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: .50 Browning Cooling Jackets >> believe the PTs would have used the Browning AN-M2 aircraft gun, The M2 used in Army applications has a removable heavy barrel, the aircraft model has a lighter weight barrel with a perforated cooling jacket (similar to the M1917 .30 Cal. MG). << This is somewhat off topic. I have always had some misgivings about the term cooling jacket. To air cool a gun barrel better basic physics would have required that the surface area of the barrel be increased. But if you look at the cooling jackets the only contact the cooling jacket has with the barrel is at the front end of the jacket. This is hardly enough contact area to draw away enough heat to make a difference to cooling. The function of that jacket seems to me more for keeping the hot barrel from scorching anything it touches than it is for cooling. In fact photos of the same guns used in combat without the jacket is not uncommon. Kelvin Mok -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Ian Archer" Subject: RN Destoryer 1/700 Greetings. Thank you very much for the helpful information about the 1/700 RN destroyer kits. I would like to model the WW2 destroyer HMS Ulysses, what kits and accessories should I gather together? Or should I just choose another ship? Ian Hi Ian, To model the Ulysses in 1/700, you'll need the Tamiya (ex Skywave) HMS Onslow kit. This is a nice kit and will give you a good starting point. You'll need the WEM O-P PE set, plus other resin bits n bobs from their 1/700 Professional range. It'll be a major conversion of the kit, involving cutting the hull and making it longer - but it's the only option AFAIK in 1/700, unless you scratchbuild it. I highly recommend that you beg, borrow or buy a copy of the War Built Destroyers O-Z Classes Ensign/Man o War by Alan Raven. Also try and get the O-T modelling article by Nat Richards in IPMS(USA) Quarterly 18/4. I used both when I did the Onslow last year (well I finished it last year at any rate ;-) ) and they're were invaluable. Hi all On the scale rulers; you all might want to check out CTT "SCALE RULERS" at 109 Medallion Center, Dallas, TX 75214. Phone 214-361-5400. They advertise 12 scales; 1:20.3, 1:22.5, 1:24, 1:25, 1:29, 1:32, 1:35 1:48, 1:64, 1:72, 1:87 and 1:160. Clear plastic and flexible. They are a model rail store and may have other scales available for around $2.99 each. There also is a company in the southern California area also. I am still going through my back issues of FSM and Ships in Scale. I would welcome any comments. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "John Rule" Subject: Scales >> Hey How about someone making a scale ruler available in 1/96 and 1/72 and 1/48 and 1/32 for us R/C Guys << Three of the above are standard architectural scales available on a three sided scale rule available from any artist or drafting supply store like Staples. 1:96 scale is 1/8" = 1' 1:48 scale is 1/4" = 1' 1:32 scale is 3/8" = 1' Also an engineering scale rule usually has scales of 1" = 10' , 20' , 30' , 40' , 50' and 60', which can be used for various modelling sales or ratios. For example a 1" = 60' scale looks the same as a 1"= 6' scale which is 1/72 scale. This will give measurement gradations down to 1/10th of a foot. You just have to remember that all scales of equivalency convert to ratios. 1" = 10' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:120 1" = 20' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:240 1" = 30' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:360 1" = 40' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:480 1" = 50' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:600 1" = 60' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:720 similarly, 1/32" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:384 1/16" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:192 1/8" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:96 1/4" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:48 3/8" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:32 1/2" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:24 3/4" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:16 1" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:12 1-1/2" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:8 3" = 1' scale is the same as a ratio of 1:4 All of the above scales or ratios are readily available. The really helpful ones which are not readily available are 1:700 and 1:350 which are sort of bastardised metric scales 700 scale being a close to the imperial 1:720 and 1:350 being merely double the size of 1:700. If you are even more confused now, have a drink. Sincerely, John Rule -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: John Snyder Subject: Colourcoats News Hi Shipmates, We've had some changes regarding our paint supplier, and while these will result in a small price increase, they will result in a more regular supply than we've had over the last 8 months, and will allow us to more quickly expand the line of colours. Up to this point, Hannants have supplied our paints, from the same source as their "Xtracolour" line. Barry Keeler, who is retired, has been doing the formulation and tinning for Hannants, and worked in this capacity from his home. Colourcoats added greatly to his workload. Recently Barry decided to sever his employment with Hannants. The good news is that he purchased a new tinning machine for his own use (the old one belonged to Hannants), and will now be working exclusively for WEM, dealing directly with the paint supplier and producing Colourcoats. This arrangement will allow Barry to work a much reduced schedule, but will still provide us with a much more regular supply of paints, and allow us to expand the range much sooner than would have otherwise been the case. However, because we can no longer obtain our supply of tins from Hannants' supply, we are now forced to purchase our own supply from a German manufacturer, in palette-sized lots. The paint manufacturer who actually supplies Colourcoats have generously offered to store these for us at their site at no charge. But it DOES mean we are now paying a bit more for our tins. As a result, we are forced to raise the price of Colourcoats by 10 pence to 1.30 Pounds/tin (1.11 ex-VAT), effective immediately. Existing backorders will still be processed and shipped at the old price. We regret the price increase, but think everyone will agree that the benefits--regular supply without lengthy waits for re-stocks, and greatly expanded line of colours--far outweigh the small price increase. We'll be sending off the Kriegsmarine colours for production soon, and will be expanding the RN and USN WW2 range as well. Welcome to WEM, Barry.
