If this information is correct, Chacabuco had no funnel caps and no modernised bridge at the time of the picture (November 1938 - March 1939). Also the lower bridge wings doesn't match a picture of her after modernisation (Whitley, p. 26), the main mast was removed and the foremast looks different (crow nests, spares). Does anybody knows, if Chacabuco was modernised before 1939-41 to match the picture? Could someone identify the location (see also SMML Vol. 1610)? << A photographer evidently aboard a ship passing up the same channel seen in http://www.marinai.it/ospiti/volpe/foto/32.htm shot a photograph of CHACABUCO that appears in JANE'S FIGHTING SHIPS 1942. Both in this photograph and in the URL, CHACABUCO has a mainmast. Perhaps the crow's nest on the foremast seen in the URL was a removable fitting. It doesn't appear in JANE'S FIGHTING SHIPS 1942 but it reappears in a photograph of CHACABUCO in 1950, in the World Ship Society's book about Armstrong/Elswick, WARSHIPS FOR EXPORT. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Filipe C. Ramires" Subject: Re: Dogs and Models Hi there Dogs and models together!!! That looks nasty! Have you take a photo of the destruction act??? That reminds me one time I was younger and I had the Matchbox Indianapolis in a friends house, in the garden table to dry the paint. The cat comes in and starts to eat the masts...that remind me those japanese old movies of Gozdilla...the monster attacking the ship!!! Have you ever think of starting to be movie producer??? Just kidding. Regards and best luck in the move. Filipe C. Ramires Lisboa, Portugal Keith's picture will be uploaded in the next day or so with the latest update. If you have a need for those articles, send me (off list) your mailing address and I will happily send you a xerox of the articles along with some updated notes. The three articles covered: 1. J through N classes 2. O through T classes 3. U through C classes The first article is based upon the Matchbox Kelly kit, but could be used for the WEM Kelly/Kashmir kits...though because the WEM kits are so much better than the primitive Matchbox kit, most of the basic kit modifications are no longer required. The other two articles are based upon the Skywave/Tamiya O class kit. Likewise, with the development of the WEM line of parts, much of the scratch building mentioned in the articles can now be easily done with their parts. I thought that was atmospheric precipitate, like from when the ambient air gets supersaturated. It's like making rock candy. Those are just air crystals forming on any convenient surface. Seriously, as a wood carver/sculptor, the dust I generate is a fact of life in my studio. Maybe I have been lucky so far, but I usually glue a handle (could be a length of sprue) to a surface that will later be hidden, then I hold the piece to be painted in one hand - away from work surfaces - and the airbrush in the other. Since I don't work in 1:700 scale, I can usually wipe away any imbedded dust with a gentle swipe of my finger after the paint has dried but not cured. The result is absolutely stunning, and the article is a treasure of hints and tips. The modeler worked for 14 months on Kaga, and in the last shot he has an Akagi sitting next to it! Don't miss that one. Humbled, Richard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Chris Drage" Subject: Some idiot....... HI Keithy bubs, >> Some idiot (quiet Drage & Jenkins) forgot to tell the movers not to pack the computer. It is now under a ton of other household items for the next two months. << .........now, I am almost certain that Shane will back me up here when I say quite catagorically that we wouldn't even presume to guess the identity of the Cannuk Wally to whom you are refering. Shane....? Regards, Chris He tao rakau e taea te karo kupu kaore e taea te karo (Te reo Maori) Chris, Got that in one mate. We would never go after such an easy mark ;-) Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Chris Drage" Subject: O-T modeling article by Nat Richards Hi Richard, >> Can I but this issue anywhere? Or, failing that, is there any chance for a scan or photocopy of this article? << I covered this (with Nat's approval) in an article I submitted to WEM for publication on their website. You need to contact Caroline Snyder to see when it might appear. It covers my own experiences plus Nat's instructions on converting the Tamiya O Class. It also include Tim Stoneman's comments on the accuracy of the process. I have used it to build two Qs and two Rs. These haven't appeared yet on the SMML website because I can't accurately confirm their camo schemes for the point in time that I modelled them (even with Shane's exhaustive help). The best thing to do is to make masters as per Nat's/Tim's instructions then mould and cast them as one leader and one flot. destroyer for each class. I am waiting to see when Shane completes the two Qs I gave him - HINT HINT. Regards, Chris He tao rakau e taea te karo kupu kaore e taea te karo (Te reo Maori) Chris, Patience mate - they'll get done. Just remember how long it took for me to do the Onslow ;-) Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Starline / Fleetline Subject: Re: HMS Fearless >> There is now a save the Fearless web site with heaps of photos. http://www.hmsfearless.co.uk/ << Would't call three tiny thumbs, heaps-a-photos!
