I'm painting a 1:96 scale German Vorpostenboot and I want to simulate a well-worn steel deck where the foot traffic has worn away the topcoat to reveal (subtly) the primer underneath. I'm wondering if the Kriegsmarine used something like the standard USNavy "red lead", a yellow chromate primer, or something completely different. Any suggestions? TIA Doug Bauer Poway, CA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: PSmith6328@aol.com Subject: 1/72 HMCS Snowberry Hi I have just obtained a Revell Snowberry kit and after talking to some people I have been told that I can build a British version of this kit as all the parts are in the box already. All I need apparently are a set of Matchbox instructions to tell me were to fit everything. Is this correct? If so has anybody got a set of instructions that I can have copies of and also what detail sets are available for this kit. Any other information would be greatly recieved. Thanks in anticipation Phill Smith Milton Keynes UK Hi Phil, Check out the reviews of the Great Little Ships 1/72 line on the SMML site under Aftermarket reviews. The room is a sparsely illuminated church hall of uncertain denomination; the setting is early evening of a midweek and the congregation such as it is, is not gathered to pray. The assembly of some thirty or so lost souls is predominantly white, male and middle class who have scattered themselves, seated in supplicant posture, eyes down avoiding their neighbour, hands clasped before them held still by willpower. At the lectern one man speaks at what is now a weekly ritualistic routine. He says...... "Hello everyone, this is my first time here; my name is darshanw@hotmail.com. and I'm a friend of Shane. Now I know that I'm a ship modeling addict. It started when I was a kid. Nobody told me what a monster it would become, back then nobody knew. I was just a child and all I had was my pocket money and the Woolworth's store. An older boy first told me about........ about air..... sob about airfix.... sob He said it would be easy, he would help me the first time or two. There was no harm in it, he said. There were cars and boats, planes and trains. I could buy one every week for a year before I had every single one. I hesitated. It was so hard to say no. I tried, God I really tried, but the little spitfires and messchersmits hanging on their cotton threads from the ceiling looked so colourful, lifelike, and magical. I could see the dogfights, headphones crackled 'tallyho', pilots baled out of burning fighters........ Then there was Cambeltown, Hotspur, Daring and Cossack, each was 1/6d. It wasn't long before I was hooked, Each Saturday morning I needed a new fix, By saturday night I was high, By sunday evening the last of the paint was drying and the buzz was wearing off. Within a few months I was an addict, and nobody seemed to care. The older boy had by now disappeared and no one would say where or why. Much later I was to learn that he was confined to his room with ever increasing squadrons of lancasters determined to recreate the first 1000 bomber raid on his dad's garden shed. I became pale and withdrawn, hurrying my meals to excuse myself as rapidly as possible. I started going to the library at first allegedly to do schoolwork, but I was lying to myself and others, for the library had an antidote to my craving. Twelve shelves in the history section. It was there that I saw other furtive young men, in ill fitting clothes, staring dreamily at Janes and Brassey's I tried to deny it but I knew I was one of them.I had to buy two Bismarks because one of them had to burn. I took pictures with my brownie and kept them to myself. For a while then I was able to control it. It was only plastic after all and I had overdosed, My mantel and bookshelves could hold no more....... But then in 1992, when I thought It was all over for good, I started to get really sick again. One evening it happened. I'll never forget it for the rest of my life, it's as clear as if it were yesterday. I walked unprepared into the store, I wasn't ready for it, I could never have been, nothing could have prepared me for what I saw, It was....A Resin Waterline Battleship.... I froze up, The chill took me again. My palms became sweaty, I couldn't move, I didn't know what to do or say but I couldn't take my eyes off it. In my minds eye the turrets revolved, the barrels elevated, a seaplane catapulted from the quarterdeck, signal flags are run up, smoke comes from the funnel, green seas break against the bow............ It had happened again, the old addiction was back, I tried to back away, stung, but from that day on my life has fallen apart. Where I used to have a life now I have only a two car garage. My family, such as it is, is discouraged from coming in, I hardly ever see them any more. It was bad even before the computer came, but now it's hopeless. There are boxes and boxes of kits everywhere, and now the books. I just can't control myself anymore but I have to know...that handrail was there, just so, was it polished brass or grey paint? And which day exactly was that air search radar fitted, WHICH DAY? The paint. it drives me crazy, the need to know, which colour. when?? Even the dog hates me, I never see my old friends, I'm too ashamed, they don't even ask any more. Nobody calls but the credit card overlimit special collections depatment.....It's too much. it never stops. This is my story, But there is help, For those of you out there who know please feel free to call, write or send a donation to: SMMLANON POB 1402 Looflirpa Woop Woop OZ 142002 And Thank You Very Much......... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Trumpeter "Courageus" former Soviet destroyer Hi Enrico, The kit is being released in both the WW2 and modernized configurations. I had to use the basement as a hobby area. I had done some painting of assemblies and they were on papers on the floor to dry. When I returned a couple of hours later our new beagle pup, who was also in the basement had escaped her enclosure. As I recall, at least 2 torpedo tubes had "bit it" along with a few various other parts. Dogs like ships......... Both the dog and the model are now distant memories. At the time the loss of the model seemed devastating, it was like 2 weeks allowance. Today it reminds me of all the good times I had with Susie the beagle....... hopefully, much of the damage can be repaired, and in 30 or 40 years you can look back on it......... and smile. I do. :-) Regards, Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: Heller HMS Hood >> On second thoughts buy one and send it to Keith Buckley...he's going to need a challenge to keep him busy filling those long Canadian nights now his PC has died. << No, sending one to Keith wouldn't work. He probably lets his dog sleep on the workbench. ;-þ Mike Settle -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
