What are the origins of the nickname "Oz" for the country down under? Joel Labow (hopelessly naive and unsophisticated) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: O'Connor Subject: SMMLANON Yes, like you, I too am an addict, and I appreciate the International Date line differences, as I read your confessions to the world on April 1, 2002 (Oz time). Keep the soul bared- the family will surely return. The dog will stop biting. All things in good time. Meanwhile, enjoy the rush. Feel the high. Live life vicariously, through your addictions. On to the Darings, the Bismarcks, and the Seafires. Take a deep breath of styrene cement, of resin odor as you open the box. Don't curse Airfix or Revell, Lindberg or Ozmods. In time to come, as your addiction subsides, you will walk past your kit display area and catch a wafting of cured enamel paint, and it will take you back to the good old days- before your eyes went south and you can't do what you did before. As the bumper sticker says..."The older I get, the better I was".... Happpy Easter and Happy modeling!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: Shrieve Boards My thanks to all those, both on and off list, who set me straight on the purpose of shrieve boards. Michael London -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Dogs and Models Dave, You just jogged my memory about models being destroyed. I remember when I was about 12 and I had all these models all over my room. So my brother-in-law came up with this great idea to build me some shelving that would completely cover one of my walls from top to bottom. He had these 1" x 1" that ran thru the each shelf from the floor to the ceiling for support. And of course in those days I would finish each model I bought with my allowance. It was great and all of my models fit on it. About a week after it was all in place and loaded with my models we heard this terrible crash. Seems my Brother-in-law had only secured it to the wall at the bottom and not the top. So I guess at some point the center of gravity changed and it all came away from the wall. WHAT A MESS! Many were beyond hope and all of them lost their masts and parts of the superstructure, some with major hull damage. That night what could not be repaired went to the ship breakers - which was fun too :-) Mike Donegan NAVYDAZE - Naval & Aviation Artist -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: JKrakow@aol.com Subject: Kriegsmarine Primer Paint Hi Doug Yes, the KM used a red colored metal primer. There were also metal primer paints with grey and red-brown pigments for marine use. But I was under the impression that the V-boote were mostly wood? Dave www.PrinzEugen.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: BECJPARKER@aol.com Subject: Re: Trumpeter (Courageous ex-Soviet Destroyer) I have built the model and here's what you need to know about it. The Courageous (with fish torpedo fish) is the last conversion of the ship in Soviet sevrice mid to late 50's not the WW II configured ship. The Trumpeter ("Anshan Destroyer") is the Chinese missile armed ship of the same class that they did later in the 50's. The ship (model) as manufactured is a fair model but will take some work if you want to do a nice model. Many of the small parts are bulky and will need to be replaced. There is no photo etch in the model so what you will need is the Gold Medal Models 1/200 scale 2 bar railing photo etched set. Its for the WW II IJN destroyers but has the 2 bar rail you will need for the model. It also has the hand hold rails that can be used on the 130mm gun shields and the deck straping can be cut up to improve the twin 37 mm gun shields if you build the model as it comes. The 130mm guns are blockey but a lot of detail can be added. The same goes for the twin 37mm the torpedo tubes and ships boats and other small fittings on the ship. The hull is a one pice that seems to match the 4 view drawings I have of the ship, not sure how it would match up against a set of hull lines. the screws, shafts and mountings are servicable but not exactly right in comparisons to the drawings. You will want to rebuild the mast in brass as they are in a thin plastic and won't support much rigging. My rating overall of the kit is it's a c model but with a little work it can be an a- model. Information on the ship can be found at the following two web sites The Russian Navy . The ship you want to look for is the Project type #07 destroyer, Gnevny Class. The other site to find info on the ship is at Look under the book "GREMYASCHCNY" and her sisters (Soviet Destroyers of the "Project7"). You will see when you look at the info on the ship that to convert it to a WW II type #07 is a fairly good project. The major changes that will jump out is that the secoundary weapons are different, 76mm and 45mm and there are some changes in the gun shields on the 130mm. The deck levels change and the mast change quite a bit, none of it, however would be to difficult to change. Shoot me an e-mail off line and I'll send you some photos of the model I built. These boards are typically hand made and kept in the trademan's tool box. Marked 0-45 degrees.
