I spent a good week working on a Fujimi 1/72 Bell UH1N Twin Huey. I was building it as a Navy rescue chopper. I sanded seams perfectly, gave it a great paint job, painted all small detail, decaled it, etc. etc. etc. This was one of my better efforts. I had it on top of my dresser in the bedroom while deciding where to display it. Well a few days later while I was at work, my kitten discovered it on the dresser and decided that she had a few finishing touches to add to the model. She chewed the tail rotor and one blade of the main rotor. She also chewed a counterweight on the main rotor and the tail skid. She bit into the fuselage under the engine intake and popped a door window inside. When I came home and saw it, I kept my cool because I knew it was my own fault. To the kitten, the model proved to be a fun exercise in teething. To me, it was a lesson to put my models where she can't get them. Rod. P.S. I managed to replace the entire rotor assembly with an extra rotor I had from a scrapped UH1N. But I had no enthusiasm to repair the rest of the damage. On my shelf it sits, 3 years later. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Ken Subject: An Obscene SMML? Whoa! SMML Digest VOL 1618 triggered a three hot pepper nasty content warning in Eudora Mail. When the message is not from an obviously obscene site (those get dumped before opening, or as Pogo used to say, 'burn before reading'), it is always fun to try determining just what might have triggered the mechanical prude. I think it was the phrase 'dogs and models.' Obviously, a porn site! Just demonstrates the futility of filtering based on word relationships! Come on folks, try to keep it clean . How about 'canines and scale representations of maritime subjects...' Hi Ken, Naw, it was most probably my comment about starting & possibly finishing a kit that triggered it ;-þ Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: OZ slang for Australia Aus = OZ well that's what I was always told -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: IJN Kaga model Gee just as well that builder of that ship is not at APMA, how can I contend against the legendary Ian & is that a kit Simon to be built at end of year?? How can I contend!!!! but anyhow that was a wonderful Kaga! Andrew -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Poutre, Joseph A" Subject: Re: Shipyards Models From: SAMI ARIM >> I got in possesion of some very old plastic waterline kits of some sailing ships. The company's name is "Shipyard". They have at least Santa Maria, Golden Hind, Mayflower, Bon Homme Richard, Constitution, US Revenue Cutter, S.S. Savannah, The Flying Cloud, Chas. W. Morgan, Gertrude L. Theboud in their listings. These look like transitional kits from 50'ties with cream coloured, fantastically detailed hard plastic with no sprues. Also, printed ratlines on a clear plastic sheet and very colourful decals and instruction sheet are included. I have no idea what scale these kits are, but the Golden Hind is about 4" long. Are these kits common pieces or some rarities? << Sami, These sound like rereleases of kits original to Pyro, later released again by Lifelike and most recently Lindberg. They're not very rare, except for perhaps the label on the box. Sea SLICE, designated as a High Speed Vessel (HSV) for the exercise, will demonstrate the flexibility achievable by "modularity" in a small, fast, highly manoeuvrable platform. During FBE-J, which will take place from July 24-August 7, Sea SLICE will operate no more than 80 miles off the San Diego coast in a cluttered littoral combat environment against surface, sub-surface and air threats. Sea SLICE will provide "modular mission capabilities" through multi-mission modules, permitting execution of different operations in series. The multi-mission modules include: Force Protection/Combat Equipment Module, Mission Module, and Berthing Module. The modular configuration will vary dependent on operations to be conducted. Modules will be fitted out to perform Mine Countermeasures (MCM), Anti-submarine Warfare (ASW), Force Protection and Time Critical Targeting. In MCM and ASW experimentation, Sea SLICE will be integrated with two types of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), a towed sonar, and a simulated torpedo system. A modular Combat Information Centre (CIC) in the deckhouse will provide all command and control and systems integration to effectively engage in all live fire and simulated events during FBE-J. Some of the weapons to be tested include the joint Lockheed Martin and Oerlikon Contraves 35mm Millenium Gun and the NetFires System and launcher, intended to launch Lockheed Martin developed Loitering Attack Munitions (LAM). The Millenium Gun will be installed on the bow of Sea SLICE, and the NetFires launcher will be placed on the aft portion of the ship. Sea SLICE is expected to participate in a live fire testing of the Millenium Gun, a missile launch from the NetFires System launcher, and a simulated torpedo strike against a simulated enemy submarine. An integrated sensor package will include Lockheed Martin's Silent Sentry passive radar system, and three FLIR Systems Inc. sensor devices that provide infrared, electro-optical and laser ranging capabilities. The name SLICE refers to how the ship moves through rough waters. The ship has an advanced hullform that provides for outstanding stability and speed in high sea states and is capable of 30-plus knots in wave heights of up to 12 feet (Sea State 5). This unique hullform is a variant on SWATH (Small Water-Plane Area Twin-Hull) technology and has four separate underwater hulls that provide buoyancy, propulsion, and excellent hydrodynamic efficiencies. The ship is controlled by a patented PC-based canard and stabiliser steering and motion control system. SLICE technology is predicted to yield speeds of 45 knots in Sea State 6 (13 to 20 ft. seas); however a larger ship with greater propulsion than the existing Sea SLICE vessel is required see link to see a photo of the ship http://defence-data.com/current/page14026.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: MARDOT237@aol.com Subject: Brooklyn Bridge Hey guys, I know everyone is mostly into ships but I was wondering if anyone knows of (or has or can build) a small scale model of the Brooklyn Bridge. You were all very helpful when I was asking for information about models of the USS Arizona and Missouri. Let me know Marty (in Brooklyn) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: ESCORT ISSUE 17 I have today (I know its April 1st) uploaded the latest issue of the IPMS(UK) Small Warships SIG newsletter - www.brown.abelgratis.co.uk Apologies to anybody who has been trying to access the site recently (Monday afternoon here in the UK) but half way through uploading I hit a snag. Turned out to be all my own fault but it took an hour to resolve.
