Yohan, you need to get Roger Chesneau's "Aircraft Carriers of the World, 1914 to the Present, An Illustrated Encyclopedia." Same size, same format. Mine's published in 1998 by Brockhampton Press, it was also published by Arms and Armor Press in 1984 and 1992. ISBN 1-86019-87-5-9 (Brockhampton Press) 0-85368-636-X (Arms and Armor) Sorry don't know about Whitley and/or any diving incident. Marc Flake -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Mike Potter Subject: Re: HMS Glamorgan >> Was a Wessex in service then or a Wasp or Lynx copter on the Glamorgan? << From FALKLANDS-THE AIR WAR: GLAMORGAN carried HAS.3 Wessex serial XM837. "Painted in RAF [yes, RAF] blue-gray overall with red-blue roundels; ROYAL NAVY titles and serials overpainted black; deck letters deleted." The aircraft was destroyed by the Exocet on June 12, 1982. Its wreckage was jettisoned. GLAMORGAN carried a borrowed Wessex on deck, June 14-15. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Ken Hoolihan" Subject: Re: Partial Review of HMS Invincible kit I don't normally buy into these sorts of debates on SMML but on this occasion I am going to the defence of DP who has come in for some quite petty and nasty treatment from Edwin Marsh. I found DPs original comments on SMML regarding the photos of the IS 1/350 Invincible hull useful and I hope he continues to speak out with objectivity on issues of accuracy in the face of hostile responses. Mr Marsh has offered not a jot of relevant information regarding HMS Invincible but instead has focussed only on attempting to discredit DP. This kind of response doesn't add any value to ship-modelling. The real question has become, why is Mr Marsh so keen to discredit DP. Does he have some other, unstated agenda? I understand where DP is coming from in respect of comparing reference materials. I too have found mistakes in plans by comparing them with photos - no less than an excellent set of plans by the famous Norman Ough of HMS Lion in 1916. I am not saying the plans are poor - they are very good but have faults. A model based on them as the only reference, would not be correct for ship in May 1916. Finally, a few words on the Invincible hull which was the original subject of this thread. It is very pleasing to see another kit manufacturer taking a risk and releasing a large scale pre-WW2 subject. Good on you IS. I hope you have the good sense to take what DP has to offer constructively and thereby improve your product if he is correct. I know, there is a nice kit from WEM but it would cost me last shoes and it is still quite cold here... I need your help to locate a drawing of hull lines. I would prefer books or magazines in print as I have very limited access to out-of-print documents. Many thanks. Whitley's excellent "Battleships/Cruisers/Destroyers of World War II: An International Encyclopedia" trio of books that covers aircraft carriers? I was hoping Whitley would follow up with such a volume but had heard that he lost his life a few years ago in a tragic diving accident. (is this really true by the way?) I have books specifically on US and IJN carriers but would want something to cover all nations like Whitley's books. I'm looking for a decent 'survey' book of all classes rather than details on a specific few. << Roger Chesneau's 'Aircraft Carriers 1914-Present' is a good one, informative and technically accurate as far as I can tell. The drawings aren't good, though. The layout and presentation is similar to the Whitley books, and there are some decent photos. I got mine new in 1993, and I'm not sure if it's still in print, but you should be able to get a copy at a fairly reasonable price somewhere. Mike Bartel IHP -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Mike C" Subject: Re: Indiana Jones For John Fiebke: That scene had me going for a while, too. While it's true that the submarine may not have submerged, it's also true that submarines always have a deck watch when running on the surface. Besides, on a trip that long, I'm sure someone came on deck at some time to dump garbage or exercise, so I'm sure he would have been spotted. The other thing that got me was, "Where was the crate?" I don't think u-boats had deck lockers and it was too big to fit down a deck hatch or even the torpedo reload hatch, but it's still nowhere to be seen. After a short while I reminded myself that it's only a movie, and fiction at that, so I let it go, but I'd say now that your girlfriend at least deserved points for being observant. ;-D Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "rt.rogers" Subject: Book Recommendations Not complete by any means, but you might find "Battlelships and Carriers" interseting. A small "tome" covering 300 international classes of ship, it was compiled by Steve crawford & published in 1999 by Dempsey-Park of Bristol, ENGLAND at £10. - The ISBN No. is 1-84084-327-6 Ransford "Taff" Rogers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Katz, Gene S" Subject: Book Review I have just obtained my copy of "Gli Incrociatore Italiani", Cruisers of the Italian Navy, and am preparing a book review thereof. Hope to have it posted shortly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: AAA Hobby Subject: Re: Partial review >> I am sorry again??? And just what would be the cause of the alleged vendetta??? Am I notorius for attacking ISW and their products in the past??? Have I invented or imagined the errors I am talking about??? The only sad thing about is that some people are prepared to defend indefecible no matter what the strenght of their argument is. << I don't know the answers to that, butr to review a kit by looking at the photos is sorta like describing sex because you've watched some porn films. Reviewing a prodcut when you lack the product to review (first hand knowledge) is unethical and unprofessional. And it lends itself very easily to the charges made. I had tried to ignore this "review" but you seem to not get the criticism aimed at you. Where are your references concerning the errors. If I could see you pics/plans and the kit pics, maybe I could come up with an opposite opinion of yours. But without having the kit to actually look at I would not make a fool of myself by decrying the errors when I cannot see them for myself! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Shaya Novak" Subject: 4 Destroyers in One Box New from Airfix some instock but going fast pre orders being taken, new supply on the way. 1/600 scale. http://www.modelshipbuilding.com/4wwiidd.htm HMS Hotspur, HMS Cossack, HMS Campbellton, KM Narvik all four kits in one box 16.00 that's 4.00 each ship.
