UNITED STATES and wanted to know what color are the main hatch covered painted and are they painted on the sides or are they green like the deck color and what color are the stacked life rafts that are throughtout the ship, thanks for your help i want to get right this time, edward wilde revell painting directions arent that good lol -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Ted0330@aol.com Subject: Re: scale Hi DP- a few thoughts- I've always wondered how the scales we use got 'established'. There is nothing obvious to me about choosing 1:450 vs 1:350 as a starting point. 1:600 makes scaling mathematically easy (50 feet to the inch) but the details are small as is the ship. 1:700 and smaller isn't big enough for me to enjoy the finished product. I've come to like 1:350 best. 1:450 allows almost the same level of detailing but not as impressive a final 'bulk' to the model. The 1:350 kits seem almost 'alive' to me, something smaller scales lack. The differences in finished length are not enough to make display a problem (worth getting a glass cabinet regardless of scales used). For pre-dreadnoughts think 1:350 or larger would be best. My Connecticut (BB-18) at almost 10 inches looks like a more impressive model although the same skill level went into building both, which are both built to 1/550 scale using plans with similar levels of detail. Most predreadnoughts were about 350 to 450 feet long. 1/700 scale would make most predreadnought models 6 to 7.75 inches long. I do not think that 1/700 a particularly good scale for most modelers as the results generally do not look very real to me. There are a number of exceptional modelers who can make 1/1200 or 1/700 models that look realistic. << Why do you not just change the part that reads (good scale for most modelers) to read (good scale for Myself) and as for one of your larger models looking better even though the same skill level was used, i suggest replace some of the skill level with more effort and get away from this Bigger is Better Syndrome) i had the pleasure of attending the SMML Bar-b-cue at Jim Baumann's home last year and his collection of models would blow your socks off, yes granted he is a very Exceptional Modeler, but seeing the Rigging arrangement on his HMS IRON DUKE with the aerials and the starfish each with five wires coming from it, he could have got away with probably one wire representing each, but no he has the skill and puts in the extra effort and has the professionalism to go the extra yard to achieve the AIM (Perfection) In a nutshell everyone to his Own, but i do not need to read that a certain Scale is not for most people when its a personal choice. Some very nice boats there (especially RC). I could not resist to buy the Pjetr Veliki (Kirov Class) from HP as they threw in a Kursk for the price as well, and there is no plastic Kirov as far as I know. The price is still steep I think (about 100 USD) considering, that there is no PE with it. But hey, I was in the mood and it is a nice ship. Has anyone built this model and has experience with what should be considered doing it? I'm thankful for all advice, for this price the end result is better could (oh, by the way, HP mentioned that there will be a PE set shortly, hopefully not for another 100 bucks) Happy Modelling Werner -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Michael J. This I seem to remember was called Baltic pattern. My preferred 'E' mail address is: gpeat@globalnet.co.uk thanks George Peat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
