Hello, I kept meaning to write and ask a question, well now I have a few. 1.) Did the Camo scheme on the HMS Prince of Wales, change between the Battle of the Denmark Strait and her deployment to the Pacific. If so what scheme was she wearing during the Battle of the Denmark Strait. 2.) For those microbuilders, what do you use to rig 1/1200the scale WWII ships? 3.) At one point someone on this Site was kind enough to point us to a web site that dealt with models of the HMS Hood, would whoever that kind soul was, please point me in the right direction. Thanks. I know the reason for 1/700 and 1/350..the Japanese flooded the market in the late 60's and 70's with their waterlines, and we all followed suite. Measuring those scales is a bother and I would guess the powers that were at the time took a look at the biggest subject with an eye on their molding capacity and went with 1/700 scale. At the time I was big into Airfix kits and 1/600 was easy to measure when scratch building, with an engineering scale (1"=50')..it made sense. Having lived in Paris when younger I was puzzeled at their need to break tradition and do 1/50 aircraft and 1/400 ships, when everyone else was doing 1/48 and 1/600. I know a lot of the early Japanese kits were 1/50 as well, probably owing to some wierd metric conversion (like HO scale..1'-3.5mm.what's with that?) Thanks to Felix and IMM I've become interested again in "other scales", 1/350 is good for that special project, but 1/600 and 1/500 makes for a nice size model. They are also easier on these tired eyes. But in the end, it's what makes you happy, even if she's not that pretty, or the model doesn't quite fill up the shelf on the glass case! H. Mispelkamp Subject: Scale Sorry guys, in my humble opinion 1/400 rules - especially for WWII ships. Ever try putting a 1/450 or 1/350 ship beside a 1/400? It just doesn't work. A 1/450 Missouri looks much to small (silly?) beside even a 1/400 Yamato or Bismarck. Overall, you can still get more/convert more WWII warships in 1/400 than 1/350. That may change in time but I doubt that I will make the move. I own over 100 ships of WWII in 1/400 and it will take a very long time for the selection of 1/350 scale injected ships to even come close to this. I say let the resin guys keep 1/350. Just my Canadian nickel's worth! Regards Sincerely Peter K. H. Mispelkamp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Jtennier@aol.com Subject: Cartridge Paper I was reading an article on one of Brian King's excellent models, HMS QE, and for the plating, he refers to using his usual technique of "cartridge paper". Now, I work in the paper industry, and it leaves me as a bit of a loss, so can someone from across the pond advise what it might be a reasonable substitute? And a translation for "car cellulose grey surface primer", is this a lacquer based sandable undercoat that comes in a spray can (and why is it spray and not sprey?) Thanks for the help. This I seem to remember was called Baltic pattern. << George, Take a look at my web site @ www.classicwarships.com and also the www.modelwarships.com web site and look for the "Warship Pictorial #15 - Kriegsmarine Schnellboote" book I recently published, which has a number of different camo patterns in it. This and all the other books I have published are available at your local hobby shop and a number of book and hobby mail order businesses.
