Today we honour all our servicemen past & present. "They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn; At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them" "LEST WE FORGET" Shane & Lorna Jenkins -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Starline / Fleetline Subject: Re: the RAN and future ships >> Rumour has it that the the US has offered two Arleigh Burkes to Australia at a very cheap price. A thank you for Afghnistan support??? << Rumour has it these have been discussed in several variations over the past two years, Rumour has it the USN prefers the Flight IIAs over the initial Flight I & IIs. As a result seeing we were retiring our best assets (the Adams Cl DDGs) we were offered the four KIDD Class destroyers and in typical apathy the pollies nixed the idea out of hand. (because of Manoora & Kanimbla... fmr LSTs Saganaw County & ??) Now apparently Taiwan is back on for the Kidds. At one stage Turkey said they'd buy them but the deal fell through. Rumour then has it the US offered the Burkes in exchange for various things and at a very rock bottom price. Naturally since we are about 10% undermanned in the RAN the pollies are saying no again! Our new destroyer replacement project went from SEA1400 to SEA4000. Meaning we'll look at the problem in about 12 years. Rumour has it alot is being done at the moment to have them re-consider. Still no Burkes & no Kidds, maybe grand kidds, bigger Anzacs :)? Gawd help us. Good thing I love the RAN eh? Sound like a Kiwi eh? Speaking of which if you're in Melbourne HMNZS Canterbury is in town over the weekend if youse wanna go and look, last chance (just about) to see a Leander in the flesh/steel so to speak! He included multi-view drawings (in 1/700) of the mountings, their components and the splinter shields which surrounded them. Thanks for all the replies to my question. It's now perfectly clear that I was looking for a relationship that does not exist! I guess if you are designing a model from metric measurements, those scales of 1/35, 1/50, 1/70, 1/100, 1/350, 1/700, 1/1250, don't make too much difficulty in scaling the final product that's measured in the same base 10 system. That may also explain why there is the occasional "oop's" in new releases from some of the Japanese manufacturers, especially if they are modeling a piece of equipment designed and built in the English system. The "problem" of cowl shape on Hasegawa's F6F Hellcat is one that immediately comes to mind. (hey, at least it's a naval aircraft) It may be as simple as a mistake converting English to Metric, as I am sure all their equipment and molds are constructed in metric measurements. Thanks to all, Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "David Hathaway" Subject: Re: Piotr Velikij As I would like to scratch build this ship at some stage - can anyone recommend a set of source drawings for this ship and some photo's, tech/written references? Many thanks David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Reynaga, Tim@EDD" Subject: Shinano flight deck camouflage I have a question about the camouflage of the IJN aircraft carrier Shinano. Surviving documentation for the Shinano is pretty thin; apparently only two photographs of her still exist. She appears in one view of Yokosuka taken by a B-29 from six miles up which in extreme enlargement shows only the barest outline of the ship with no detail. Not much use. The second photo is a side view taken by a civilian from a tug while Shinano was on steering trials in Tokyo Bay on 11-11-44. This one shows that she was painted in two-tone scheme. This was presumably the well-attested IJN "type 2 Hull Color" greens #21 and #22, the same distinct dark and bright pattern used as an anti-submarine measure on other late war Japanese CVs and merchantmen. The flight deck, however, is a mystery. The overhead shot is useless, so I'm left with guesswork. Most models of Shinano show a plain gray deck, but I want to do something more interesting. The carriers Zuikaku, Junyo, Chitose, Chiyoda, Zuiho, Unryu, Amagi, Katsuragi, Taiyo, Unyo, Chuyo, Kaiyo, Shinyo, Ryuho, and Hosho all had the two-tone hull scheme. All had camouflage schemes on their flight decks as well. Did Shinano too follow this practice? There are drawings showing Shinano with two different flight deck schemes in the Gakken Pacific War Series #22 book, but I can't read the Japanese language explanation of what these are. Actual schemes... planned...speculative...? In short, can I historically justify depicting my Shinano with a camouflaged flight deck? I am trying to build the USS Providence which my dad served on after WWII. I have some of dad's photos of the Providence as well as plans from Floating Drydock, but as always, I want more information as I intend to have as much of this ship depicted in my model. Any help would be appreciated... Roger Graulty -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Retire the Inchon Hi SMMLies, I never thought I'd see the day. I have thought about it but when it comes it's like loosing a close friend. She was my only command for 3.5 years. It's funny how I couldn't wait to get off the ol'tub and now how I would love to walk her decks just one last time, or perhaps slide down the 40 ft. JP-5 pumproom ladder one more time. Oh the memories. She's just steel but was my home. Hopefully she'll be mothballed on the east coast so I may have a chance to get on her once more before we shave with her. He said that it was inscribed upon the monument that the Turks have erected at Gallipoli.
