It was a true story about a USN doctor who wants to adopt a Korean/American orphaned baby, and return to the US. At least, I think it was the Inchon. An issue of Sea Classics magazine had a two part article about ships in movies, and I believe they mention it there too. It was a good movie, but the ship served primarily as the background. I don't think there were too many shots of the ship in the manned we'd like. Does anybody make a model of this class of vessel? She is slated to be sunk as a target << Sunk as a target!! That is one heck of a target. I wonder who getS to do the honors, surface, air or subs. Probably all 3 - I hope she fools them and goes down quickly like the OKLAHOMA CITY did. As much as I hate to see ship sunk as targets it is still a lot better than seeing them cut apart piece by piece like the nasty way they did the CORAL SEA. Mike Donegan NAVYDAY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Gernot Hassenpflug Subject: WEM Colors I did not find any information on mixing in the back issues, and now that John has announced the WEM colors for the IJN (none of this boring German and British stuff, not to speak of the American, gawd!), I shall have to try them out. Actually the British colors are available in model shops in Osaka, at a hefty price. I have been using Pitroad's very nice acrylic lacquers so far, very easy to use, quick-drying (less than an hour with airbrushed coats), and hard. WEM colors are what make-up exactly? Are they enamels of the same sort as Humbrol or Tamiya enamel paints, meaning I can use the same thinner? Or is there something decidedly different about the base, which means getting hold of a different thinner/cleaner? Any explanations welcome. Thanks, I look forward to using them - and John, don't forget the modern JMSDF paints please (or are they available already?) Regards, Gernot -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Soucrosshobbies@aol.com Subject: Re: Shinano flight deck camouflage Shinano had a concrete deck. Reports give her a pinkish/dark brown color, it also had saw dust mixed into it. The man who played the original Godzilla was apparently aboard the Shinano on one of her trial runs and said the flight deck area was awful because the winds across the decks were puling the sawdust out of the deck and making it blow along the deck blinding anyone who had there eyes open. Shinano had her hull painted in the two tones but from my research she never had her deck camouflage. Allan Perry has done a lot of research into this, check out his site at: http://www.geocities.com/ijncv/index.html Matt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: CA139JOHNF@aol.com Subject: Re: Inchon Keith Bender may lament the impending passing of his ship which, accourding to the NVR, is currently in mobilization catagory A. Dave Shrlaw pointed out that she is slated to be sunk as a target, that is not on the NVR web site. (http://www.nvr.navy.mil/nvrships/details/MCS12.htm) which does state the former museum held ship Guadacanal (LPH7), is scheduled for a sinkex.(http://www.nvr.navy.mil/nvrships/details/LPH7.htm) Dave, where did you find that info on Inchon? No flame just curious. I try to keep up on current status of ships undergoing deactivation. John Frohock USNSM USS Salem (CA139) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Richard Rathgeber Subject: Korean War colours I am trying to find the paint scheme for the ship boats on Korean War era Warships, ie. New Jersey and USS Salem. Any and all help is appriciated. Rick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: misc 2 x Arleigh's for Australia.... I think that would be a dream.it's a nice dream!!! well my guess is that it would be good, seeing that 2 arleigh are just as god as 3 or 4 FFg's (sorry to any FFG fans out there!) & if the numbers in the navy do get to a stage where crews are short maybe cutting the fleet to 2 Arleighs & the 2 FFgs & the Anzacs wouldn't be such a bad idea, also seeing that the plan to upgrade the Anzac with a modified Aegis have been dropped till further notice & I think the plan to add cells to replace the launcher have also been put off for another couple of years Kidd class.. I sort agreed with the Ran knocking back the Kidds, as they are "crew hungry" & with the numbers in our navy not as big as wished for, the RAN would have then had to look into upgrading with new computer systems like thay are experimenting on the Ticonderoga class to shave off about 50 or so crew members, though the Kidds are still a great ship, I think the navy really needs new ships with modern technology (Aegis or similar) , not something that will be good for 5 years & then need millions to upgrade Inchon...well at least the fish will hold her close instead of looking a sad sight as she sits on the choppers yard, falling apart as the welders hack into her..who knows maybe she will take a pounding & still remain afloat, defiant to the end!?! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
