The AGF designator is for command ship. Al Ross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ron Wild" Subject: Gillbert & Sullivan Can someone provide me with the words from a song in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta HMS Pinafore? It starts out "When I was a lad and went to sea" and ends "And now I am the Ruler of The Queen's Navy". I wish to make a tape using these words and place it in my model of the Victory. you may contact me off list at: wild@silk.net Thanks, Ron, In Kelowna BC, Canada. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: USS Oklahoma City (CLG-5) Thanks Glen for the further clarification - I was not really that sure about the flag but I did know at some point she did have a flag, even thought it was brief. Must have made the old girl proud again to have that flying. Probably like 95 year old woman who puts on her best hat and makeup one last time. Are those your pictures posted on the OKLAHOMA CITY web site?? If not, do you have any you can share with us. One nice thing about models is that mothballed ships are good reference because they shed all the add ons (lifeboats, fire hoses, etc, etc) and it gives you a chance to see the basic shape of the ship with all its nooks and crannies - the other stuff you can add yourself with active duty pictures. Rusty, LaSalle, originally a Raliegh, was the command ship for the Persian gulf, up till things grew in 1990. AGF would be "Miscellaneous Command Ship" (Janes, 85-86, pg739). This will give you most shipping lines then extant. You can also try earlier editions of Jane's Merchant Ships. Failing these sources look for the shipping line on the internet which will be of more help for modern vessels. In Texas they used to have an office in Port Arthur. Possibly they have this years left or possibly one from a previous year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: ZMzimmerman@cs.com Subject: Aquila airgroup I just got a 1/700th Delphis Aquila. Now I know the Aquila was never finished and shipped an airgroup. The instructions mentioned a Re 2001 as all or part of the airgroup. Does anyone know what other aircraft might have been in her airgroup? And how where they painted. Thank you, Michael Zimmerman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Glenn and Kelly Neklason" Subject: USS LaSalle (AGF-3) Rusty The USS LaSalle (AGF-3, ex-LPD-3) is a converted Raleigh-class amphibious ship and was converted specifically to serve as the flagship for Commander, US Middle East Forces (now Commander, US Naval Forces, Central Command) in 1972. AGF is "miscellaneous flagship". Incidentally, AGF-11 is the USS Coronado. She is a converted Austin-class amphibious ship and is the command ship of the US Third Fleet, based at NAS North Island, San Diego, CA. Glenn E. Hi Everyone, Rusty was asking "What's an AGF?", referring to his question about the USS La SALLE, AGF3.The USS LaSALLE is a former LPD converted into a Joint Command Ship, and redesignated an "AGF". Check out: www.hazegray.com, and go to "World Navies Today", then to the section on the US Navy - Fleet Support Auxiliaries. Hope this helps. A beautiful book and at first glance it seems to be the definitive work on the subject. The amount of research that must have gone into it is mind bending. Congratulations to Chris Langtree, it has been worth waiting for. And John Lambert's drawings are, as always, superb. Regards to All, Harold Lincoln -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: JFR1945@aol.com Subject: Re: AGF? AGF is an Auxiliary, Miscellaneous -- Flagship. In fact, the LA SALLE started life in 1964 as a RALEIGH Class LPD (LPD 3), but was modified in the early 1970s to be flagship for COMMIDEASTFOR, operating primarily in the Red Sea. She has been baking there ever since and is probably the only major naval vessel currently painted white. John Reeder -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: raisingirl@mindspring.com Subject: Re: AGFs hi all.... Rusty White asked: >> class of ship it was and the AGF just drew a blank. I guess I'm getting old at 47, but can someone tell me the class of ship the LaSalle is and what an AGF is? << An AGF is a miscellaneous flagship (I think; I forget the EXACT USN definition). LaSalle is a Raleigh-class LPD that's been specially configured as a dedicated flagship. The father of my best friend from high school served aboard the USS Valcour (AGF-1) when she was COMIDEASTFOR flagship; she was a converted small seaplane tender (originally AVP-55). LaSalle replaced Valcour in 1972, I think. I also think the Navy has another LPD, the Coronado, that's redesignated AGF-11 and replaced/replaces LaSalle on occasion as MIDEASTFOR flagship. BTW, I'm eagerly awaiting -- as is my friend -- the release of a Barnegat-class AVP kit. My friend has been itching for years to build his dad a model of his old ship...and a very interesting, and graceful, ship Valcour was, too. jodie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: "maeisen@erols.com" Subject: The Kellys Folks: Just wanted to congratulate fellow SMMLie Chris Langtree for his excellent new book "The Kellys" which is chock full of beautiful photographs (many of which I believe have never been published before) and color plates of camo schemes for the RN's J, K, and N class destroyers. Anyone who is building a model of any of these ships would do well to buy this book! Good work Chris! What's you're next project?
