Sir, just to inform you that in forthcoming issue of PLASTIC SHIP MODELLER magasine, my esteemed colleague, Mr. Paul O Reilly will be featuring a total build article, possibly in two parts on the Aquila. He built and painted it in an "..as she would possibly have looked fully in commission and operational...." to include super neat Italian type camo scheme and "proposed" air group. Lots of close up pictures and good informative reference text for your build. Thanks Ray D. Bean, writer for Plastic Ship Modeller Magazine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Re: What is AGF Now that we know what AGF is can somebody pleale explain what "Miscellaneous Command Ship" can possibly be??? It is nothing short of superb! This is a very well written book, with sections on design, armament, camouflage and a very complete account of each ship's war service. Loads of photos, most I've never seen before, even a photo of that most elusive of the class, HMS Khartoum, on the bottom of Perim Harbour. The amount of original research is amazing, as shown by the very extensive list of primary sources. Complete listings of armament changes and upgrades are included. The section on camouflage has some very nice colour profiles by John Roberts and a listing of what scheme was worn by each ship throughout her service life. The photos throughout the book are well chosen, showing lots of the various camouflage schemes. John Lambert's drawings are great as well. The service history section is very comprehensive and makes great reading. You won't want to be without this one whether you are a model maker or historian, or just like great books on warships. Great job Chris! Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Steve James" Subject: Re: Aquila Air Group I'm no expert on the Regia Marina but IAW Roger Chesneau's 'Aircraft Carriers of the World 1914 to the Present' (1984) Aquila was to have non-folding winged RE 2001 initially. 2 were fitted with arrester hooks and a third experimentally fitted with a torpedo as an strike aircraft (RE 2001G). Chesneau suggests 36 would be carried, Norman Polmar's 'Aircraft Carriers' (1969) suggest 36 +14, others surmise up to 56 - carried on deck, in hangars and suspended from the hanage deck ceiling and 66 IF the wing folds were developed. No other references I have mention any other aircraft types. As for camoflage, I could not find any of these particular aircraft but I would hazard a guess (cringe & ducking for cover) they would have been similar to those aircraft such as the "catpultabile" RE 2000's abaord the Litorio battleships. Cheers, Steve James -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "WEM" Subject: Re: S-100 Schnellboote Etched set... some answers from WEM Hi Dan, First of, many thanks for your comments on our latest set. I ran your points across Peter Hall, who designed the set, which was based on extensive reserach by several people. Just to note that the brass is not 3 thou and 5 thou, as you suggested, but 5 thou and 8 thou. In answer to the first point, >> 1 There is, so far as I can judge, only one actual error on the frets. That is part number 15, the bow 20mm framework and sight. It would appear that the framework has been miss-interpreted. In all of the reference that I have seen on the Dehrkranz 41 2cm mounting, there is only one element to the upper framework, and that is on the left hand side (looking forward). The sight itself comprises a rubber eye piece and ring-sight assembly mounted on a tubular arm that shoots off to the right of the upper framework. On the brass fret, the upper framework has two sides and a plain ring sight is fitted on the centre section. Still, the result of this error is that you have effectively two upper frets and a ring sight you can use on another project. << Take a look at the photo on page 55 of Steve Wipers Warship Pictorial. It is clearer on the right hand boats gun, definitely a double frame with a ring gun sight. It also backed up by the line drawing that we used from Dave Krakow. Re the next point that was raised, >> Incidentally, this is an area in which the Revell kit is incorrect as it places the gunner on the left side of the gun where he should be on the right (this is still looking from the gunners point of view). << The replacement parts for the bow 20mm if fitted correctly will place the gunner to the right as he should be. Re the square section railing, try a good splodge of paint, which can round out square sections quite well, especially as the rails are extremely fine You cannnot cast railings that fine. On the omissions, we reckon that if the gun shields were photo etched they would have been way too thin, even in 8 thou. Re Points 2 and 3, >> 2 Wind protector for the rear hatch (just aft the 3.7cm). 3 The wind break component of the Kalottenbrucke - the kit part is too thick. << we thought the kit parts were OK. If anyone else has any input on these, or any other points, negative or positive, I'm sure we'd all love to hear from you ;^) Hope this helps, Caroline Snyder White Ensign Models http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/white.ensign.models -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Glenn and Kelly Neklason" Subject: USS Oklahoma City (CLG-5) Mike I presume you're talking about Joe Caruso's OKC web page. I sent him a number of photos of the ship at Mare Island a couple of years ago, but he has yet to post them. Some of my shots are on Wayne Neighbors' USS Oriskany page, as the O-Boat was tied up aft of the OKC, so I got a few shots of the O-Boat, too. I was not allowed below decks (no lighting, unseen hazards etc) but got a nice tour of the upper decks, including the bridge. I do have a bunch of shots of the ship, both pierside and on board. Sure wish someone would crank out a model of the ol' girl as she appeared after her refit! Me & others I know of would love to see one. Glenn E. I was privelged to spend the last few days embarked in HMAS MANOORA, here in the Persian Gulf. What a great bunch of sailors!! I was there on ANZAC Day and enjoyed a wonderful ceremony celebrating those that have made the ultimate sacrifice and gone before us. My hats of to the Aussie Navy!
