I when over to the official web page of the big Gipper but there is not much just old stuff. Also does anybody know of sites that show decommission ships in our reserve navy yard across the country? Thanks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: Humbrol Colours for Japanese destroyers >> quick question.. what would be the closest colour to pain the Tamiya Shimakaze in humbrol colours the mis for Tamiya piants is xf-53 (2) x Xf-63 (1) .. humbrol 27 would be pretty close right??? << You can't go far wrong with Humbrol #27. Japanese warships had different greys depending on the yard where they were built. #27 is very close to the colours used by Kure and Maizuru (Shimakaze) shipyards while it is too light for Sasebo and Yokosuka (see Snyder & Short color chips for Japanese navy). However bear in mind the importance of scale. Actual colours as used on the prototype will usually be too dark or vivid on a model and will need to be toned down somewhat. The smaller the scale the more noticeable this effect. The apparent colour of a ship at sea will be affected by reflected light from water and sky and will at first glance be lighter than if the ship was, say, in drydock. My feeling is not to get too paranoid about getting the colour exactly right as, apart from the factors noted above, the effects of weathering will quickly make themselves apparent. Michael London -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Donald Bridge Subject: Comte De Grasse, Barry & Cape St George Hi Roy Decals for the Barry are included in the Skywave Arleigh Burke M13, for the Comte De Grasse Skywave Merrill SW44 and the Cape St George Skywave Mobile Bay M3. Unfortunately the Dragon and Revell repops of these have much more limited decal sets. Don Bridge -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: John_Sheridan@putnam.com Subject: USS ARKANSAS color conundrum! >> Now.... According to the directions, as well as John Sheridans excelent Camo site, the Ark was wearing MS 21 (all blue) system, or 31a/7b at this time. However a check on the Navsource photo site, the only photos that show her wearing the blue, is from the later part of the year after her SK 2 had been moved forward. The only photo that I can find (on navsource or anywhere else for that matter) That shows her with the SK 2 on her mainmast (ie. early '44) is the following: http://www.navsource.org/archives/01/013323.jpg Looking at the side of her hull, she is definately only painted a dark color up to her sheer line, and a much lighter color on her upperworks, and what apears to be the usual deck blue on her decks. It looks an awful lot like the MS 12 that she had early on in the war. But Sheridans' Camo site says she hadn't worn that since '42. << I will have to dig up where I fond the data for ARKANSAS in MS 31a/7b when I get a chance. >> Sooooo....... Now I'm not sure which way to go. Did she go back to wearing MS 12 in '44 for a short time? or is this a rather dull and way too non-paternistic MS 31? Or is this a typo on Johns site? << I don't think so unless she was undergoing post refit trials and was only half painted at the time. What it looks to me is that the photo might be mis-labeled and is really ARKANSAS in her 1942 fit. Note in the picture she is not carrying the SK2 radar on the main mast and the gun tub layout is slightly different than the 1944 S 21 photos. Just me .02c worth...... John Sheridan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: david_l._miller@ccmail.wiu.edu Subject: Green or white putty I use the red automotive filler putty. It works real well. A few months ago I "discovered" the metal micro tips and small plastic dispenser bottles at Hobby Lobby (they also have these tips at Wal Mart, I discovered later). Anyway i put a dallop of the red putty in the botte, added a bit of lacquer thinner to the putty, closed the bottle and shook it. The micro tip now allows me to dispense fine (1/32 in) beads of this filler. Great for many modeling uses, and much better than the old "smear on, sand off" method I used before. Ramires" Subject: Re: humbrol colours for japanese destroyers Hi Andrew and list I normally use the following colours: - Humbrol 27 Matt Sea Grey - Humbrol 32 Dark Grey For a while that I don't paint a japanese ship and I don't remember all the sources I have research on the subject but I still can guess that there were 3 or 4 different types of greys. Variations due to the different colours used in the main different shipyards (Kure, Yokosuka, etc). I am sure that someone can give you more detailed info in the list. Hope it helps. Filipe C. Ramires Lisboa, PORTUGAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: Salisbury Plans John I have a set of plans of Salisbury that were published in the Airfix Magazine some years ago. They are to 1:300 scale. If they would be useful, let me have your postal address and a copy will be on its way shortly. Tom K -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: Squadron Putty: Green or White? >> Any difference between the Green or White Squadron Putty? I've been using the Testor's Red Putty but I have heard the Squadron Putty dries finer. << If you want a fine-grained filler, consider one of the various automotive spot putties. They come in large tubes, are a lot less expensive than the hobby shop stuff, and will last years if kept capped. My primary filler is Nitro-Stan, a lacquer-based item.
