Just picked up a new book at Barnes & Noble Books. The title is "Carrier War - Aviation Art of World War II" by Paul Stillwell. WOW!!!! This book is a gathering of many of the most famous aviation and maritime artist from around the world. It is 140+ pages of color prints of some great paintings. When you go to look for it, you cannot miss the huge size(12.5x11.5) and the great painting by Tom Freeman of the CV-10 Yorktown on the front cover. The title says it all! At $30US this is a good buy. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Matthew Prager" Subject: JOINT VENTURE (HSV-X-1) I had the opportunity to go aboard and tour the JOINT VENTURE (HSV-X1) today while she was inport here in Bahrain. I'm a USN Mine Warfare bubba here on the staff of COMCMDIV 31. The mine warfare community has evaluated the platform in the MCS role. Anyway, what a ship! Made the ship-handler in me drool! She's a "vomit comet" though, suffers from a very short moment and a lot of jitter. Can anyone guess what my next scratch-building project is going to be? I'm starting to gather the data now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Topy Yester" Subject: USN catapults Dear Friends, I want to thank you very much for your invaluable help on USN carrier deck questions. Now I would have a new question about USN catapults. A friend of mine is trying to model a Soviet Kingfisher with catapult in 1/48 scale. AFAIK the Soviets received some older ships due to the lend-lease agreement. One of them was an Omaha class cruiser with some OS2Us on deck. Does anybody of you have detailed information (e.g. close-ups) about catapults on these ships? Do you know if this catapults were similar / standard on BBs, CAs, CLs ? Thank you very much, Zsolt from Hungary -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: LBart73@aol.com Subject: Re: 3 ft Revell Cutty Sark Kit I built the Revell Constitution many years ago - it also had flocking on the sails. As I remember, I was able to remove the flocking by scrubbing the sails with an old tooth brush. I think I did it under running water in the kitchen sink. I vaguely remember wiping the sails down with a paper towel & mineral spirits to remove residue. That was about twenty years ago so my memory may be wrong. Hope this helps. Larry Bartlett -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Fernando, Yohan" Subject: Mr. Surfacer What exactly is Gunze Sanyo 'Mr. Surfacer' best used for? Should it be used as a general primer or only on certain areas to fill in gaps, sinkholes, gouges etc.? Any tips on getting best results from it? I bought a can from my local hobby store the other day after hearing how great a product it was, but want to use it prudently as it wasn't the cheapest item. Thanks!
