Our illustrious Bob Pearson. Bob sent me a sample of his first set of decals (transfers to us Brits), to enable builders of Canadian Flowers to superdetail and individualise (a new word) the kit. The set covers 11 different R.C.N. units - Arvida, Buctouche, Chicoutimi, Drumheller, Eyebright, Fennel, Sackvill, Sawinigan, Shediac, Snowberry and Trilliam. Both long and short fox'l ships. I am impressed by the research that has been undertaken. The single sheet, with a line for each ship has individual sized pendant numbers, name plate, and individual 'gunshield' artwork. Added to these are green Canadian maple leaf funnel emblems, and escort group funnel markings. There are six sheets of conversion templates (in colour) and a small booklet which shows camouflage worn and the changes required to the standard kit for the necessary conversion. I have submitted these for review in our Marine Modelling Internation, and the editor commented on just how fine the gunshield paintings were. (The word "dinkey" comes to mind). I understand that there will be a set for RN units produced soon. The cost! Each 1/72 set is supplied in its own plastic envelope for $25 US, £18.00 (UK) or $40(Can) which includes postage. Mail to bpearson@kaien.net or HYPERLINK http://www.cbrnp.com/RNP/Flower/index.htm (I'm sure that Bob will cut in if I have got these wrong)! There are smaller sets available for 1/96 and 1/350 scale too at reduced prices. Yours "Aye" John Lambert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: HMS Burwell Colours Hi Gordon, The lighter colour on Burwell is indeed RN white. This was a warm white, and the yellow in it would make it appear darker when photographed with orthochromatic film, which was undoubtedly the case at that time. The other problem with trying to decipher those photos of Burwell also has to do with orthochromatic film: it rendered any colour with blue in it as lighter. Now, there was very little contrast between RN white and Western Approaches Blue to begin with, so when you photograph them with a film that makes the white appear darker and the blue appear lighter, it becomes VERY difficult to discern which is which. Looking at the earlier photo of Burwell (before her after 3 stacks were cut down), it appears to me that the darker colour on Burwell is probably Western Approaches Green, including the first and fourth stacks. The false bow wave is white, as is the panel at the extreme bow. There is an angled panel of WA Blue on the hull at the stern, with white above it and on the after deckhouse. The angled panel on the hull just aft of the midships deckhouse and below the two after stacks also appears to be WA Blue as does number 3 stack, and there appears to be a WA Blue panel above the WA Green, just aft of the pennant number. Raven describes the dark panels at bow and stern as black, not dark grey. A slightly later photo of the ship, taken after her three aft funnels were cut down , is interesting in that it shows a repaint in which most of the darker and lighter colours have been reversed. Mr. WR, feel free to step in here and help. The contract, worth Euro 45.3 million, is being awarded via the American-German Ram Programme Office (RAMPO) as part of a contract already underway between the United States and the prime contractor Raytheon. In accordance with bilateral agreements between government and industry, the German and American industries both hold a 50 percent share in the Ram programme. On the German side, Ram-System GmbH (RAMSYS), a joint venture of EADS/LFK and Diehl/BGT and the prime contractor for German Ram orders, expects a contract amounting to Euro 21.1 million. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Edd Pflum Subject: OT: Laundering Funds As mentioned in the "Strath" post, I am ordering some plans from John Lambert. John doesn't take plastic (unfortunate, as I have a large sheet of ,040 styrene I was planning to send him.) My bank will do only wire transfers, however there is a $45 service charge (on a ?20 order!) Can a postal money order be purchased in UK funds, and will it honored over there? Any suggestions? (...and be quick about it, he's mailing the plans this weekend :) ) Edd -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Brooklyn correction I like to apologise for the typo in my "in box review" of ISW's Brooklyn. When talking about portholes I have missed my decimal point. I ment to say that they are over 0.5 scale meters (up to 56 cm to be exact) and not 5 scale meters in diameter. Regards D.Przezdziecki -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Friedrich Kappes Subject: questions on South-Korean patrol craft Who can tell me when the Chebi 51 - 89 = PK 151 - 189 "Sea Fox"/"Sea Hawk" went into service and where to find pictures of them? I also search for such info on the "Sea Whale" and "Sea Dolphin" classes. The T 301 class (Soviet origin) had an armament of 2x 3,7 cm; 2x 1,3; _?_ mines or 2x 2,0 cm; 4x1,27 MG; _?_ mines? Where to find photos of this class? For those of you unfamiliar with "Navy News" it is one of the best publications available giving news about the RN and is profusely illustrated. What a diorama this would make. "An historic first, five carriers, from four different countries, caught on camera in the Arabian Sea while taking part in "Operation Enduring Freedom" From foreground to background, by columns: USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT with escort LEYTE GULF astern, ITS GARIBALDI with escort ZEFIERO, FNS CHARLES DE GAULLE with escort JEAN BART, HMS ILLUSTRIOUS with escort SOUTHAMPTON, and USS JOHN C STENNIS with escort PORT ROYAL." << If Italeri finally came out with their announced CdG, then at least all 5 carriers could be built in 1/700. I'm not certain about the French and Italian escorts in that scale. Joe Poutre -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Filipe C. Ramires" Subject: Re: household items for modeling Hi there, Let us see... Photo 35mm film box to store small pieces. Plastic juice bottle corks for mixing paints and putty. Every kind of small pliers, file and other building tools that you can find in a common tool box. Paper clips...very useful to use small portions of glue. Toothpicks or plastic tea spoons to mix paints. Any type of card (plastic or paper) to build pieces. Oven cleaner (Forza) to remove paint in old models. Any kind of wood...very useful to build diorama elements and bases. Small scissors to cut small pieces and decals. Ceramic tools and Tooth brush for modelling terrain or sea. An don and on and on...... I guess these materials are so familiar to my work bench that I can't distinguish if they are house or modelling proper. Regards. Filipe C. One of the trees is missing. I am looking for a good contact where I could purchase the missing tree. I live in So California. << Henry, A while back I lost a part from a Gneisenau kit. I didn't have their US address, so I wrote Revell Germany at the address on the instructions asking for a replacement. I also included three US dollar bills (they hadn't screwed up; I had lost the part myself). A few weeks later here in Northern California I received a box containing a new part, along with my three bucks! I bet if you write them they will get a new tree to you without any problems.
