John doesn't take plastic (unfortunate, as I have a large sheet of ,040 styrene I was planning to send him.) My bank will do only wire transfers, however there is a $45 service charge (on a ?20 order!) Can a postal money order be purchased in UK funds, and will it honored over there? Any suggestions? (...and be quick about it, he's mailing the plans this weekend :) ) << Have you guys considered using Paypal? Once you get your accounts set up, you can make your payment with a credit card, John receives the funds the same day in his account in Pounds Sterling. Paypal is at: http://www.x.com/ I don't use Paypal often, but there are times it is indispensible, such as ordering from that incorrigible rapscalion Keith Butterley. Mike Settle -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: O'Connor Subject: Re: CdG in 700th A few years ago, Italeri announced a CdG in 700 scale. Perhaps with the time delays, cost overruns and more recently, the operational problems which beset the girl, they decided it was a bad idea. I'd love to know if they ever completed the molds....Maybe it's sitting in a warehouse, gathering dust and awaiting the day the real thing plays an exceptional role in a world event, then release the kit, ALA so many other subjects in modeling. Jaques Druel was toying with the idea of a resin kit (?), but I don't know the status of that project-doubtless dependent on an injection molded kit release. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Dave Shirlaw Subject: Re: AOEs The Supply Class AOEs are being transfered to the Military Sealift Command. How is service? Is conversion to dollars easy? Ted Tsaltas -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "R N Pearson" Subject: Re: OT: Laundering Funds Here in Canada you walk into the PO and ask for an IMO. . they check the current rates, you hand over the cash (plus $5 Cdn for fees), they print the IMO. . you post it and 4-7 days later it is cashed in the UK. Or I go to my bank, and they do the same thing on one of their official looking cheques ... but there is no extra charge for that service. Regards, Bob Pearson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Re: AOEs Hi SMMLies, It's hard to beleive that the navy will cast aside a pretty much new ship to keep the old ones like in the case of the AOE's . I do know that they spent allot of money on the Detroit AOE-4 two years ago in the former Phily navy yard. Shaft replacement, the hole nine yards so that had to run into the high millions and pretty much the same for her sister Camden AOE-2. But when it comes down to it the navy never really made much sence to me in their ethics of thinking on cost. I know, I did my time 79-83. Keith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: CHANT tankers >> Can anyone help? I am shortly to begin a 1/48th scale model of an armed wartime 'CHANT' channel tanker; I have obtained hull, fittings and detailed plans, but apart from that, nothing else. Does anyone know of any references/publications/reviews giving any of the following details: 1. The names of the vessels in the class. 2. Any accurate, reliable colour schemes, including deck colours (one friend has mentioned that at least one CHANT carried a dazzle pattern). 3. Any books/magazines that have featured this class of vessel. << In wartime all ships carried the prefix "Chant" followed by a number. A total of 43 were built and were named Chant 1-12; Chant 22-28; Chant 42-45 and Chant 50-69. Chant 7, Chant 61, Chant 63 and Chant 69 were lost during the war. They were all built in 1944 and had a gross register of just over 400 t and a deadweight of 400 t. They measured 148 ft oa by 27 ft beam. They had oil engines giving them a speed of 7½ knots. Chant 12 and Chant 28 were sold to France in 1946 retaining their names. The remaining survivors served various ship owners until their eventual scrapping mostly in the fifties and sixties. This info comes from Mitchell & Sawyer "Empire Ships of World War II" pub by Sea Breezes in 1965. In wartime they would have been painted the standard grey, except where camouflaged, in use for all M.O.T.ships. In peacetime their colour scheme would depend on their new owners, the above ref gives new names but not owners. If Robin cares to contact me off list I will be happy to supply new peacetime name for any particular ship. I have no information on deck colours, probably hull colour, black or red lead.
