Poore" Subject: Re: Cabot Flight Deck? >> I've seen many items from the old CF Adams class pop up in the last couple of years as those ships are finally stripped and scrapped. << Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out. Any idea if it's possible to actually contact someone to get a specific item off of a ship being scrapped? My old boat the Barney (DDG-6) is due to go in Philly next year and I'd love to get hold of the missile firing key. I almost "liberated" it during decom, but figured someone would miss it on final inspection. Well, I don't know just looks like a chunk of wood and no guarantee it really is from the CABOT. However, I do remember many years ago they were selling blocks of wood from the flight deck of the FRANKLIN, today I wish I had one. I do know a guy that has full length planks from the BON HOMME RICHARD's flight deck. No idea what he is going to do with them. May show up on e-bay someday also. This is totally OT. My wife and I have planned a trip to Kiwi land in March of 2003, a month or so, Starting at Christchurch and all over, would be interested in knowing what nautical sights would be worth visiting or rather shouldn't miss. << Jim, when you get to Auckland, don't miss going to Dick Hopper's model park. He and Merv Smith, a model train nut were both in trouble at home for having too many models around the place so they did whatever financing deal was necessary and built a model park. Dick has his 1/96 scale Falklands task force there, and his 1/48 WWII Cruiser HMNZS Royalist in a private lake! It's most ship modellers dream come true. And his mate Merv has a fantastic model train layout there - it's his dream come true too. I'm sorry I don't have the proper name for the park or the address, but I'm sure the concierge at any decent hotel will know where it is. For those interested in Dick's project, there are a few pictures on my site at http://modelwarship.com/friends Cheers, Mike Kear Windsor, NSW, Australia www.modelwarship.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Starline / Fleetline Subject: Speaking of NZ Speaking of Kiwiland... NZ WARSHIP SEIZES TANKER IN... WAIT... NZ? A WARSHIP? New Zealand television reported Friday that a RNZN warship in the Arabian Sea had seized a tanker suspected of smuggling oil from Iraq, leading many to suspect that the report was a hoax. "You're kidding, right? New Zealand has a warship?" asked U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "Like for war? Does New Zealand know?" he added. "Nobody was more stunned than we were," said Kal Omari, first mate of the seized vessel. "We saw this frigate steaming toward us, and we were worried, but then we saw this funny-looking flag, and we thought, 'Oh, Kiwis. What the hell do they want'" When an officer from HMNZS Te Kaha announced that the tanker was about to be boarded, the crew of the detained ship was confused, said Omari, but their confusion quickly turned to anger when they saw what the New Zealand sailors were carrying. "They were armed. With guns," said Omari. "Kiwis with guns. And a warship. What is this world coming to?" "They were pretty rude too," Omari added. "They started asking us all sorts of questions like, 'Where did that oil come from?' But first we wanted to know who gave them the damn warship." The UN said the incident is already under investigation, and promised swift action against those found responsible for giving the New Zealanders guns. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Stephen Allen Subject: Revell Burton Island/Eastwind Dear All I have just acquired this Revell kit (boxed as Burton Island), and have the GMM etch set for it as well. I would be interested to correspond with anyone who has built this kit, and, in particular, anyone who can advise me: - which era/ship the kit best represents out of the box with the etch and minimal alterations? - recommended references? - Constructional pitfalls? TIA Stephen Allen -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Shaya Novak" Subject: Has anybody seen Duane? Hi all A typical example about banks came in my post today. Transaction amount: US $ = 15.11 Sterling equivalent at 1.475 = £10.24 Commission Sterling = £5.00 Postage Sterling = £0.50 Amount credited to my account = £4.74 All this took 10-14 days. The letter informing me of this transaction was first class = 27p (but I'm charged .50p). It cost me money to put it through the bank. I rest my case. Yours "Aye" John Lambert (I have just cut my wrist) (Again)! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: NeilTaylor54@aol.com Subject: The demise of International Maritime Modelling The day we bury our dear old Queen Mother I turn to my favourite site to find Felix has given up! I understand totally his reasons, but if he had warned us I would have downloaded the entire site for future reference. I am depressed as it is as IMM was a goldmine of information for 1:600 modellers as well as keeping us up to date with the latest developments. I have been unable to find Cascade Modelling's site and perhaps I'm the only 1:600 modeller who does'nt know there is an alternative site to Felix's. I am at present converting an Iron Duke to Orion and the photocopy at the reference library is broken so I'm now desperate to buy my own copy of RA Burt's British Battleships of World War I. Is there any body out there with a copy gathering dust who wants to sell? (In the UK) Neil Taylor Hi Neil, Yes, it was a sad day to see the demise of one the best ship modelling sites on the net. Felix did a great job and IMM will be sadly missed. By the looks of things most of IMM's content has moved to either the Steel Navy or modelwarships sites. Check the SMML site for their links and there's also plenty of info in the SMML archives on 1/600 modelling. I just want to thank everyone who responded to my post, I am in amazement at such rapid responses, but that's SMMLies for ya. What a great group and great site, My best to Shane & Lorna and all friends down under. I will be getting back to the people who wrote me, individually, in the next few days. Again, Thank You.
