I would like some information on detailing on the Yamato battleship. Is there any kind of plans on how to build bigger Yamatos? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Graeme Martin Subject: NZ Trip Hi Jim, Apart from Dick Hoppers fleet of ships in west Auckland. You should look in on the the Wellington Maritime Museum on Queens Wharf in downtown Wellington. This museum has been decimated of model ships in the last few years by the powers that be. But still has a very good nautical flavour of shipping history around New Zealand and of course the 1968 Wahine sinking in Wellington harbour. There is also a reasonable display of models on Princess Wharf in downtown Auckland. Good holidaying. Graeme Martin........ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: New Zealand Having had the extreme pleasure of going to New Zealand, I would say take the train ride from Auckland down to Wellington. I am also a big train nut as well as a ship nut, so that was fun. The scenery was very beautiful. This is a 12 hour trip. My wife and I were the only Americans on the train and we had a good time meeting all sorts of Kiwi's, Ausi's, and Europeans. We especially liked the vast array of the cuisine in this country. The different foods were amazingly good. Although, Lester Abby did try to get us to try the Mexican food, which, by the way was prepared by Chinese people, I told him there was no way the Mexican food in NZ could compare to that of So. Arizona. He told me I was right! We spent the majority of time exploring Wellington, which is like a small San Francisco. I had to buy another piece of luggage to bring home the huge quantity of used books I found in the 16 used book stores in Wellington. Kiwi's that I was able to meet that were SMML members were Lester Abby, Ken Hoolihan, and John Sutherland. I would contact Lester and try to arrange a lunch meeting with the three in Wellington. So Lester, speak up! One of the huge benefits to Americans about NZ is the great exchange rate. A piece of advice. Use your credit card for everything. You get the current exchange rate that way. We did not make it down to the south island, but plan on a trip to Christchurch next year. Oh, yea, I almost forgot. There are two very important things to remember about NZ. First. DO NOT, I repeat. DO NOT eat the Marmite. I got sick just trying it! Lester says it is used for axle grease on heavy trucks. Second. The BEER! The two I liked best were Lion Red and Tui. These are the inexpensive local beers, but I thought they were the best. Have fun, Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SeaPhoto@aol.com Subject: USS Barney >> Any idea if it's possible toactually contact someone to get a specific item off of a ship being scrapped? My old boat the Barney (DDG-6) is due to go in Philly next yearand I'd love to get hold of the missile firing key. I almost "liberated" it during decom, but figured someone would miss it on final inspection. << You can try contacting the scrap company, and if the part is something that is easily removed - perhaps not too easily, lest it already be gone - you might be able to persuade them to sell it to you. Or trade for the beverage of their choice perhaps... The trick is making a personal contact at the scrap company in any event. Good luck! Thanks SMMLies for your help. Back in the 50's a group trying to save the Enterprise CV-6, was selling blocks of the Douglas Fir flight deck. One of the fellows at the Navy Museum Photo Division in Washington has one and claims it it one of his most prized posssessions. When my ship (DD-709) was sold to the Turks, I tried to liberate a souvenir but was unsuccessful. Steve Pelham, NH -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Marines Editions Books Hi, Lately I've been trying to purchase some books from Marines Editions here in the States, but they don't seem to be willing or able to sell to the two booksellers in the States I've used before. Does anyone know what is up with them? I'm particularly interested in the recent (well, fairly recent) book on the Bourrasque class destroyers. As a last resort, I can contact Marines Editions directly, but my French is rusty and I would prefer to buy from someone in the States or in the UK.
