It is fantastic and I strongly recommend it to those with interest in the specific subject and generally the naval history of WWII. I also hear that John Lambert has produced a number of additional plans of the ships in the class and hope that those are available for sale. Dimi -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Subject: Re: Cabot Flight Deck? hi all.... Further to what we've been discussing about bits and pieces of favorite ships being sold, I know of at least two instances where wood from the decks of preserved ships has been sold as souvenirs. A few years ago, during restorations aboard the USS North Carolina, little blocks (about 3" long, I think) from her decks were available in exchange for a contribution. Patriots Point did something similar about five years ago during "renovations" aboard the Yorktown. I have about a 1" thick block cut from one of her flight deck planks, and it has a little inscribed plaque on top. Unfortunately, I think Patriots Point has been replacing the wood, as it gets past repair, with concrete. blech. There are probably more, but those came to mind as I've been reading this. jodie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Sean Pritchard" Subject: Books Dear All, 1)To the guy asking about Marines Editions, you have my pity. I have been subscribing to their great magazine for about 3 years, but trying to get any sense out of them is near impossible. I have one issue missing, along with a "hors serie" special edition on Frigates. Do you think I can get them? No chance, I've faxed them both in Pidgin French and English several times, with zero result. Try to avoid contacting them as you'll only be wasting your time. If someone on here is French perhaps they could enlighten us as to how you can deal with these people(and I'm being polite, they have my money afterall). 2) I don't know how many of you have dealt with armybook.com in Russia, they are another lot I'd avoid like the plague-after 6 months and countless e-mails I'm still waiting for half my order. A pity, they have some interesting books,a pity about the bog paper they print them on. 3) I have the latest edition of "Combat Fleets", bought at full price (ouch). I've just been given a bona fide copy (as in the geuine article, NOT a copy copy) of the CD-ROM version. As I don't have access codes does any one know how to get into them so I can see the photo's? I was given a copy of the previous edition as well, but at least I was able to look at the pics on that one with no trouble, even though the database was closed off. Like I said, having the genuine books I don't need all that again, but there are a bigger selection of photo's on the CD that I would like to see. I'm told that these CD's are given away to military types attending various seminars or shows, and am inclined to believe this as both CD's came from a mate in the MoD(UK). Anyone there that can help? Thanks Sean Pritchard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: Where's Duane? >> This guy literally travels all over the world and is gone for extended periods of time. Try not to worry. He'll turn up. << He'd better turn up! He's doing all the decal artwork for the 2003 IPMS/USA convention. Feel free to post it in full or part, I think everyone will be glad to know he is back in business, complete with a new production facility. We'll try to fill customer backorders as quickly as possible. >> From: "Samek" Subject: Re: Samek Now I would like to explain the overdue. So far, a specialized firm has been responsible for cast production. (resin) This firm is not able to fulfill our requirements in terms of time and quality any more. The situation was unbearable, so we decided to buy our own equipment necessary for the technology. At the moment,we are starting our own production. We are not dependent on anybody any more and there should be no more overdues. We are sory for the overdue. Yours Sincerely Michal Samek << Bill Gruner http://www.pacificfront.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Pletscher-Lenz-Schneider" Subject: Marines Editions Books Art Nicholson wrote >> As a last resort, I can contact Marines Editions directly, but my French is rusty and I would prefer to buy from someone in the States or in the UK. << Don't try to contact them directly. They are very lazy in answering and don't answer at all to any non-French request. You'd better contact L'Arsenal. Their address is larsena@mail.cpod.fr Jacques Druel will surely help you. Falk Pletscher -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Pola hull colour >> I need some advice to what color to make the bottom hull of the Italian cruiser "Pola". Are they red or green. I am getting two different answers and have no color photos to comfirm anything. << Keith, I am finding that the hull color below the waterline was green. I would use a "Forest Green" for this. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Edward F Grune" Subject: Historic Ship Parts adding to the discussion of historic ship parts in personal collections... 1) Several years ago I was able to obtain a chunk of wood removed from the USS Constitution [Old Ironsides]. The piece was obtained from the Constitution Museum in Boston (as part of a fund raising program) accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Yes, It may be a part from 1920's refit -- but it is a part of history. Its oak, whitewashed on one side, and has a hole bored through one edge. 2) Several more years ago I volunteered at the US Naval Historical Center - Washington Navy Yard. I worked with the curator going through the donated "junk" stored in the warehouse. (Does anyone want to see Adm. Arleigh Burke's lawn furniture?). There were some significant pieces - Prinz Eugen's bell, a section of the USS Hartford's mast, plus may more items. One week we cut, cataloged, and stored deck teak. I was told - ' if you are a plank owner - and can prove it (muster records, etc) - you can obtain a piece of plank from your ship'. It may be worth a call to see if they have yours in stock. Ed Mansfield, TX -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Timothy Dike Subject: Re: The demise of International Maritime Modelling >> I am depressed as it is as IMM was a goldmine of information for 1:600 modellers as well as keeping us up to date with the latest developments. I have been unable to find Cascade Modelling's site and perhaps I'm the only 1:600 modeller who does'nt know there is an alternative site to Felix's. << Neil, The bulk of the 1/600 ship reviews are alive and well in the ship review section of ModelWarships.com. You can search them out by accessing the 1/600 review link on this page: http://ModelWarships.com/reviews/ships/ The Classic kit list, is still around, and I will be adding the photo etch and book reviews that Felix Bustelo had previously hosted on IMM soon. As far as the latest developments go, I'm sure you may be aware that Modelwerks is going to be producing A Frisco, Wichita, and Essex in 600 scale. It will be no problem! Greetings from sunny Switzerland Roger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Burl Burlingame Subject: Hoga Dear sirs: We're looking for statements of support from organizations that matter, such as yours. The US Navy tugboat USS Hoga is last surviving ship still afloat from the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the the attack, the gallant little yard craft fought fires on the USS Arizona and the USS Nevada, pulled the USS Vestal away from Battleship Row, pushed USS Nevada ashore so that the stricken battleship would not block the channel, and pulled survivors from the water and fought fires for days afterward. The ship received a commendation for their actions. Following the war, Hoga had a long and distinguished career as the City of Oakland's fire boat. The ship is not just a tribute to the veterans of the Pacific War, it is symbolic of the bravery of American firefighters and rescue personnel everywhere. USS Hoga was reclaimed by the Navy in 1988 and placed in storage. It has been rusting in the waters of San Francisco Bay ever since. Proposals to restore the boat as a memorial and educational center were not acted upon. The Navy has decided to dispose of the boat by June 13 this year, which is not much time to prepare. The Tugboat Hoga Preservation Society was formed as a non-profit historical and preservation trust to return the tugboat to the scene of her greatest contribution to history - the waters of Pearl Harbor. Despite the short time frame allotted by the Navy to prepare a comprehensive preservation, visitation and business plan, we enlisted the support of professionals who believe strongly that the boat's place is in Hawaii, and have prepared the necessary legal and educational framework to do so. The organization's web site is at: http://www.pacifichistory.net/HOGAFILE/HOGA.HTML for more information. (Most of the page are under construction at the moment, however.) Unfortunately, despite our careful preparation and documentation - plus the fundamental "rightness" of preserving this Pearl Harbor veteran at Pearl Harbor for American citizens - US Navy officials do not wish the craft to be preserved at Pearl Harbor, or even in Hawaii. There is a possibility the boat may be destroyed. Which is why we're seeking statements of support from individuals and organizations, but it must be done quickly, before the Navy disposes of the USS Hoga on June 13. If your organization finds it difficult to do so, please pass the word along to others who might be able to support the concept of saving this Pearl Harbor veteran - the last one still afloat. Our mailing address is: Tugboat Hoga Preservation Society 1164 Bishop Street, Suite 146 Honolulu HI 96813 email is hoga@pacifichistory.net As for myself, I am a writer and naval historian whose current book, "Advance Force Pearl Harbor" is currently published by Naval Institute Press.
