The entire armament was removed when they were converted (except that Intrepid and Naiad retained 6 of their 6 pdrs). When WW1 broke out, Apollo was fitted with 4 x 4.7. I have some pictures of an excellent model of an Apollo, HMCS Rainbow, at http://members.shaw.ca/modelflags/rainbow/rainbow.html. She was never converted for minelaying. Sorry the index isn't fancy, the pix were put there for transferring...... Ron Hillsden Victoria BC Canada -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Mike Potter Subject: Re: The British Minelaying Cruisers WARSHIP 1994 has a 9-page article by Richard N. J. Wright, "ABDIEL Class Fast Minelayers at War." It covers weapons, radar, configuration changes, and camofluage. A "mystery picture" at http://www.hazegray.org shows HMS WELSHMAN of this class camouflaged as a French LEOPARD-class destroyer. Best regards, Mike Potter San Diego, California -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: David Sepos Subject: Re: looking for hobby stores in Cleveland Wings is a good pick. They also have a second room dedicated to magazines & books. Check it out at: http://www.digitalcity.com/cleveland/shopping/details.adp?companykey=105371714 You'll have to put the above address into 1 line on your browser. Regards, Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: GKingzett@aol.com Subject: Re: The British minelaying Cruisers To John Sutherland, British Warships of the Second World War, a folio published by Arco Press (which appears to have been a branch of Conway Maritime Press) in New York in 1971 contains a very good drawing of Ariadne, with a description of the radars, armament, and differences between Ariadne, Apollo, and the original Abdiel class. The authors are Alan Raven and John Roberts, so the chances of accuracy are excellent. No camouflage, however. Gary -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Steve" Subject: Re: The British Minelaying Cruisers The Abdiel Class fast minelayers were not cruisers, but were a unique ship-type that was, in most respects, an enlarged destroyer. Published resources on them are not numerous and are basically these: The old Warship Profile monograph Abdiel-Class Fast Minelayers The recent Profile Morskie monograph HMS Abdiel & HMS Ariadne An article in Warship Volume XVIII (1994) by Richard Wright An article in Aifix Magazine, March 1979 by Ian M.Flemming A chapter The Design and Construction of British Warships 1939-1945, Major Surface Vessels, edited by D.K. Brown Unfortunately, the WR Press camouflage series has largely ignored these ships, at least through Volume 3. I have just completed a scratchbuilt 1/192 model of Abdiel in the Admiralty Disruptive scheme she wore at the time of her loss. As soon as I can take some pictures and write a description I'll post it to the SMML website. I'M BUILDING A LINDBERG 1/87 TUG. WHAT P/E, ETC. IS AVAILABLE TO DRESS IT, AND FROM WHOM? THANKS, DAVID IN DIXIE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Robert Lockie" Subject: Manxman class references Hi John I found the old Profile book quite handy, as well as an article in (I think) an Airfix Magazine. I was also fortunate (I mean that - it took three attempts to send them to me!) to obtain via a fellow SMMLie (one of your countrymen, as I recall) some plans of the ship. These were of the deck and side elevation and the originals were something like 1/24 scale, with which I could have wallpapered my house, although I asked for a smaller set, given that I was only planning to build the Airfix 1/600 version&. I remember I have some camouflage pattern details although how reliable the colours are (probably not very) is unclear - it is a question to which I address my attention once the current projects are finished. Will have a search around tomorrow night, now that I can actually find things again in my reconfigured workroom. Robert Lockie Swindon UK Hi all, Here's a short list (articles on one line, with kit reviews on two) taken from my Shiplist at the APMA site: HMS Abdeil class MCM Airfix Magazine March 1979 pp 370 article HMS Abdeil conversion IPMS(UK) 6/97 pp 16 1997 Matchbox 1/700 HMS Abdeil B-Resina 1/700 Resin PSM 97/2 1997 pp 6 HMS Abdeil Wave-line 1/700 Resin PSM 97/4 1997 pp 11 HMS Manxman Airfix 1/600 SMI March 1972 pp 170 HMS Welshman conversions Army and Navy Modelworld Aug 1983 pp 162 article Airfix 1/600 I can recommend tracking down the Profile. On the home's back verandah stood a 850lb 12 Inch APC shell from the battlecruiser HMAS Australia. Many years later I found out the lady who owned the place had died and I approached the new owner who was happy to 'hand' it to me. Years later I came across a 'tween decks light fitting for the same ship. Made of brass with a ceiling hook and a cage type protector for the bulb. On the wood side, I have a wood knot from the deck of the old Elswick 'Rendell' gunboat Gayundah which served in the Queensland colonial naval forces. << Peter, you actually have a 12 inch shell? Holy Cow! I am soooooooo jealous! Any way you could post some pics of it? Want to sell it?
