Franklyn, I used to have one of those practice bombs too but mine was made of lead. I know that because my oldest son used it one day to smash some cans so he could turn them in for cash. Mangled it bad but I was surprised it was lead which explains why it was so heavy. It had the same hole in it for the shotgun shell and two holes on the end where I guess the firing device/pin was located. Well, I was mad to say the least but hey now he is a Hiway Patrolman and can fix my tickets so I guess we are even :-). Now of course you all know when we pass on that all of our "junk" will be thrown out or given away - but the good news is that is where I get a lot of mine! One comment about the USS Spiegel Grove that has been in the news. Guys I love it when a ship has a mind of her own. She sank where and when she wanted. The Japanese did not have a "standard" grey paint. Each Naval Prefecture, or Yard, mixed there own. Unfortunately there are no surviving samples of many of these. However samples did survive for four of the main ones, Kure, Maizuru, Sasebo, and Yokosuka. These are available in acrylic from Model Expo, and will be in enamel from Colourcoats. This means that you need to track where the ship you are interested in was last refitted / docked before the specific time period that you wish to model her. Unfortunately there is little information on this concerning most of the destroyer force. I compromise by using yard of build colour where it is one of the four above or by using the predominant Yard colour for the relevant destroyer class. Alternatively - guess - you are as likely to be right as anyone else's guess. Another factor is many ships spent considerable time stationed away. Three "off-site" Yards, known as Repair Depots, were established - 101 in Singapore, 102 in Surabaya and 103 in the Philippines. In addition repair ships, such as the Asashi, were stationed in places like Truk and Pilau. What colours they used is unknown. They may have used colours brought from home ports in Japan, or from the place of loading of a supply ship replenishing them. They may have simply used paint from the ship's own stocks. The same is true of the Depots. In the case of the three Depots it is also feasible that they had paint manufactured locally or that they used up old British / Dutch / USN stocks respectively or did "home brew" mixes. Your guess is as good as anyones. The cruisers are a different story. Their histories are generally well known. The one and only reference you need for Japanese cruisers is the La Croix book. It is huge, heavy and expensive but worth every cent. It is like a condensed Anatomy series book on all cruisers. It is essential as most of the plastic kits of the older Japanese cruisers vary from adequate to very poor in quality and accuracy. Of the two cruisers you mention the kit of the Yubari is average to middling and the Nagara is reasonable - probably as good as they got. I built the Nagara in her final configuration about a year ago and recall that it was reasonably accurate in outline. A good set of Skywave accessory kits and either Tom's or Joe World PE sets are close to essential. In terms of grey paint the following is gleaned from La Croix in terms of Yubari and Nagara. Yubari was "registered" in 1923 with Sasebo, went to Yokosuka 15 Nov 34, repaired at Truk Mar/Apr 42, back to Yokosuka Dec 42 through to her loss. Nagara was "registered" on 21 Apr 22 with Sasebo. Became a Maizuru boat on 1/Dec/39, refitted again there in mid 42, refitted Kure Aug 42, back to Maizuru 27 Dec 42, to Yokosuka 28 Jun 44. These ships were refitted in home ports at all times with the exception of Nagara's Kure refit shown above and Yubari had a major repair at Truk in May 42. In summary, Nagara was only in Kure grey for a few months, and Yubari almost certainly was never so painted unless it was applied at Truk. Feel free to come back with any other queries. I have several black & white photos which show a dark roof, but is the top deck green or flight deck anti slip grey? Various Type 12 & Leanders seem to have had them but I haven't seen any dark topped turret photos of the Type 41, 61, Darings and Counties which all mounted the same turret. Was this purely a Type 12 habit? Does anyone out there have any photos of these classes with dark turret tops? Ideally in colour to solve the problem. It is a weapon that could possibly have been ship mounted at one time and could have been shifted back and forth between ship and shore. I don't have much history on this particular weapon, but what I do have is interesting. I lived in Ventura, California, for a short time some 12 years ago. A friend there told me of a Spanish American War "naval cannon" in a park down the hill from Ventura City hall. I raced over to the park and ran around for 2 hours looking for this cannon. There was 1 cannon in the park, but it obviously predated the Spanish American War. I finally looked at the signs around the cannon that was there. One sign dedicated this cannon to the Ventura veterans of the SAW. Another sign stated that this "modern Krupp 5.9" gun "was removed from the defenses at Manila Bay in 1899 and brought to Ventura by returning veterans for a memorial. I closely examined the cannon and will post pictures when I find them. The piece in question was an obviously 18/19th century piece of heavy caliber. It was on a naval or fortress type carriage, which may have been original. Markings on the trunnions gave it's casting date as 1794, in MANILA. The barrel was plugged with concrete and was quite worn. It was an approximately 32-36 pound cannon. I checked the archives at the city museum and found pictures in the local newspaper from 1899. They showed what was clearly the cannon from the park being unloaded from a ship in Long Beach, CA. More pictures showed it being brought to Ventura by railway car by local army veterans. Each picture and article identified it as a "Krupp 5.9" piece from Manila". I talked to one of the historians at the museum, who didn't believe me. I went back with a number of books and showed her the difference in cannon types. She finally accepted that it was what I said, but wasn't happy. The piece is probably still mislabeled. At least it wasn't melted down in the WWII scrap drives. For references I have the old Warship Profile and a set of plans. The Profile suggest that the decks were planked except for the upper deck aft of the funnels, while the plan indicates that the forecastle wasn't planked, but the entire upper deck was. My questions are: Was the main deck planked from stem to stern? What areas, if any, of the upper deck were planked? Were metal deck areas painted or covered with corticene? Thanks! Plan "A") Hold a stanchion in a lathe collet and carefully drill an appropriately sized hole in the top ball, only to the existing horizontal hole. Then insert a short piece of brass rod stock in the new hole. Prime. paint, and Install all the so altered stanchions and trim off the projecting rod stock to uniform correct height above the deck, and attach the cap rails to these stubs. I presume the cap rails are of wood, therefore it would help if you gently tap the rail to "set" it in position. You will have to use epoxy, superglue, etc. to affix them permanently. The rails will have to be stained. PLAN "B") Compromise by simply using existing 3-ball stanchions and either cut off the top ball (or top half of it) and attach the cap rail directly. Few people will realize the difference. You will have to decide if the prize is worth the game.
