Empress of India, Empress of Japan, Empress of Australia.....Anyone know where I could find a set of plans for these beauties? << There were only two ships named Empress of Australia, the ex-German liner Tirpitz of 1914 and the former French De Grasse built in 1924 and purchased by Canadian Pacific in 1953. The trio that served in the 1890's were Empresses of India, China and Japan. I have a 1:1200 scale drawing of India if the enquirer cares to contact me off list. Michael Brown -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Mike Potter Subject: Re: NZ Navy posters The ships on the RNZN poster are: HMS PHILOMEL HMS NEW ZEALAND HMS CHATHAM HMS DUNEDIN HMNZS ACHILLES HMNZS BELLONA HMNZS TURAKI HMNZS OTAGO HMNZS WAIKATO HMNZS TE MANA The illustrations are starboard-side elevations and are to scale. An interesting item to me is that the battle cruiser NEW ZEALAND was little longer than the later light cruisers ACHILLES and BELLONA, although of course she was vastly larger in displacement. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Missing telescope >> Aha !!!! Now we know what happened to that telescope that you mentioned. Although it was "issued" to an officer, it was really loaned to him, it remained, and still is, U.S.Government Property. This may be the reason the Navy may, sometimes, appear to be just a little off balance. It is caused by the inability to account for this telescope all these years. The books don't balance. Now I know you are a good citizen, well endowed with a fine sense of civic responsibility, and are eager to rectify this situation by returning the instrument to the U.S. Navy, but prefer to not reveal yourself, for obvious reasons. However, I am willing to broker the deal for you. Therefore, if you will send the telescope and case to me, I will see what I can do to put things right. Contact me off-line for the shipping address. If you do so voluntarily, I will waive all fees and costs, and refund the shipping and crating charges. After you have shipped it, burn all papers and purge all files related to this matter. Now THERE'S an offer you can't refuse !!!!!!! << Sir, my reply is "NUTS". Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Ulan Phayakavej Subject: JMSDF DD 181 question Hi, All I saw on Skywave's web that they will announce new J series (J-21) of JMSDF DD-181 ASAKAZE in late july. As I know, JMSDF last DD number was DDG 176 of Kongo class or DD 110 of Murasame Class and yet, JMSDF ASAKAZE was DDG 169 of Tachikaze class. Will someone let me know any information of DD 181 or she will be a new class of JMSDF? Any help are appreciated Nye Nava -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Ron Hillsden Subject: Canadian Pacific Empress Fleet (was Empress of Australia) The first three Empress Ships in the Canadian Pacific Empress Fleet were the India, Japan and China, all completed in 1891 by Naval Construction and Armaments Co Ltd, Barrow-in -Furness, England. They were sisters and flagged in the UK, so NMM http://www.nmm.ac.uk/ probably has drawings. You might also try the Maritime Museum of BC http://mmbc.bc.ca/ as I know they have a model of one of the ships, or the Vancouver Maritime Museum http://www.vmm.bc.ca/home.htm as this was their home port. If you are still stumped, The Royal British Columbia Museum or the University of Victoria may have something. The Empress of Australia joined the fleet after WW1, as the former German Tirpitz (a new passenger liner, not the other one we all know!). I have a problem with one of my kits and I need resolution. So far, all my attempts at faxing the company have gone unanswered. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you and best regards. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: A challenging question on colors and camouflage Hi Joe, Sorry I hadn't gotten back to you; your message is still on my desktop but I just haven't had time to research it (got to keep the WEM customers happy, you know). My assumption is that in 1941 she'd have been wearing Admiralty paints, but in 1945.... I'll be doing some looking this weekend, but perhaps Jacques Dreuel or some of our French members will beat me to it. Cheers, John Snyder -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Friedrich Kappes Subject: vacation: visiting museums ... This year freinds of mine will spend their holidays in Nantes, France. Is there anything to be visited? Any place I could do my research? I will visit Berlin this summer. Are there institutions where I can conduct research on aircraft, airships or ships? Museums, German Army istitutions, etc? I am slowly building a 1/700-scale modern multi-national fleet with full-hull models, but I am finding myself a bit short of non-U.S. ships. So does anyone know where I can find full-hull 1/700 modern russian ships (or cold-war soviet ones, some are still used), or even underwater hull parts to complete waterline kits, DML's or Kombrig's ones for example? I don't feel like scratchbuilding such a thing without even a picture. Thanks already if anyone can help me With regards, Tangui de Saint Hilaire -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Melea/Mike Maynard" Subject: relics and live rounds Read with interest about all the neat "stuff" people with a nautical flair consider treasure. I have accumulated a number of collectables( my wife has other names for my priceless collection) One is a Chelsea 7 day clock dated "1934 US COAST GUARD" on the clock's face. I was told that it was from a Lake class cutter, the class of ships given to Great Britain in WWII. Another is a piece of original wooden deck from the Cutter Eagle, (one day my Revell model of the training cutter will be mounted on the decking.) My favorite relic is a ship's bell from a Flower class corvette. "HMS HONESTY 1943" is cast into the face of the bell, it has a great tone when stuck when guests are piped aboard my front porch. Leave it to the Brits to give a ship a real neat name like HONESTY. Speaking of live ammo, in 1973 while on duty at PT. Judith CG Station, we received a call from a fishing boat that they had left us a "gift" on our dock at our boathouse. The gift was a torpedo they had bought up in their nets and not wanting to lose their haul, simply came back to port with it. We contacted the Quonset Point naval base and they dispatched a disposal team to take care of things. The young LT in charge was sure it was a "dud" but the old chief Gunnersmate thought otherwise. A heated debate ensued as to best handle this piece of ordnance. The LT wanted to take it to OTIS Air Force base to dispose of it, making a road trip through Providence Rhode Island or a drive over the mile long Newport bridge. After all it was a "dud". Cooler heads prevailed and it was decided to take it to near by Sand Hill beach. It was early Fall and few summer residents were present. After a lot of winching and bullwork, the torpedo was set near the waters edge and a small explosive charge was placed around the warhead. Well the chief told the Lieutenant to take cover behind a sand dune but he was SURE it was a dud and wouldn't hear of it. The explosion blew the LT off the top of the dune and formed a 40 foot crater in the beach. Windows on beach houses were blown out and the town locals flooded the police with phone calls. The town fathers (and state officials) let the Navy folk know that an encore performance would not be appreciated. A formal plan for dealing with unexploded ordnance was adopted. Fishing boats from Pt. Judith still bring up an occasional mine or torpedo, but they don't bring 'em in to port anymore. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: Senkan@aol.com Subject: Paints for Yamato and where to get them Im trying to get paints on the internet for my 1/250 Yamato model. I need Kure arsenal and a color close to the hinoki cypress on her deck (maybe Tamiya's xf-55). Does anyone know of an online hobbystore than can fulfill my needs? I dont want to pay shipping and handling twice. That costs as much as the paints. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Mistress Lorna Subject: Canberra Model Show We're sending you SMML from Canberra over the next few days as we have come down to attend the Canberra Model Show run by ACTSMS.
