SC 648 acquired a couple of years ago is being donated this week to the Navy Museum at Washington Navy Yard. They are glad to have it, the first SC in their extensive and impressive display of warships. << Ted, Right, their model collection is impressive. Several years ago I made and donated a whole raft of requested figures to put on various madels to represent crewmen and pilots. Bob Santos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Franz Aigner GmbH" Subject: FAQ: Why didn't Bismark steam stern first into Brest? Possible answer: Paul Schmalenbach, in "Schwerer Kreuzer Prinz Eugen" (p.59 of my edition, in the "Conclusion" or resume to the chapter on turbines), says that Prinz Eugen could steam astern for no more than 30 minutes. The limiting factor was engine cooling. The intakes for the seawater used for cooling were shaped to scoop up seawater when the ship was moving AHEAD. The intakes were inefficient when the ship was going ASTERN. So no cooling, rising temperatures, and you have got a problem. Assuming the arrangement was similar on Bismark, this explains why Bismark didn't even try to go to Brest stern first. Hope I didn't bore you, Richard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: CDRSKI@aol.com Subject: Re: relics I have a 4 star Admirals flag. Ramires" Subject: Re: Spent torpedoes Hi there AFAIK the Japanese torpedoes detonated at the end of their runs. The Japanese had many secrecy around their torpedoes. I know for instance that the "Long-Lance" torpedoes had a self-destruction device so that they would detonate at the end of the runs so that eventually there wouldn't be any kind of rescue operation from the Allies that could make them know the secrets of the torpedo. Hope this helps. Regards. Filipe C. Ramires Lisboa, PORTUGAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: URUDOFSKY@aol.com Subject: Re: U.S.S. Any chance of some resin UP launchers etc? If so, can you put me down for a Heller Hood and brass set for delivery when both are available. You have my details. If not, is it possible to do a 'basic' fret and an 'advanced' fret, sold seperately. It would be an interesting exercise to see the relative uptake of both sets and give an idea of what people actually will hand over the money for. At least then people can decide for themselves how much they are prepared to pay to upgrade their Hood's. I can see quite a number of Heller Hoods being sold... I would have gone for the 'Ultimate set' if it was going to include the sort of detail in the original WEM 350 Hood. Maybe that could be the basis of the 'Advanced' fret? Me...I'll take whatever you have, as the chances of an ICM Hood seem as remote to me as you re-launching your own Hood! If you can't take this as an order, let me know, and I will send you one direct. Monitor. Is here someone, who give me some tips? << Dirk, Three suggestions: 1. "C.S. Ironclad Virginia and U.S. Ironclad Monitor - With Data and References for Scale Models" by Sumner Besse. This is a 51 page paperback published by the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Va and includes 1/192 drawings of both ships. IMHO this is the best place to begin for a modeler. 2. "Lincoln's Navy - The Ships, Men and Organization 1861-65" by Donald Canney, U.S. Naval Institute Press 1998. 6 pages on the Monitor with photos and lithographs...plus lots of background information. 3. "A Picture History of the U.S. Navy" by Theodore Roscoe and Fred Freeman, Charles Scribners 1956. 4 pages on the Monitor with great Freeman drawing of LT Worden being temporarily blinded after the hit on the pilothouse. Hope this helps, Joel Labow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Richard Rathgeber Subject: Re: searching for info >> I am also seeking any information regarding a German W.W.II sub designed to run on Hydrogen Peroxide, does any one here know anything about this. << There was a late model German sub wlhich used this as a propellant but they came at the end of the war and never made it big. Time Warner the U-Boats has a section on these. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Lars Scharff" Subject: Re: Chinese Ships Hi, Darius and Kerry thank you for your literature tips. Sorry, Kerry, I thought you talk about the Zhengdefu kits. Therefore it was my fault. It is realy difficult not mix up the different names. The German romanisation is different from the English one. And the current Chinese romanisation is different from both, but all books I have didn't use it but a mix of the English and German versions. The news from Seals Models are very good ones, at least there some injection kits of ships of the Victorian period. The Tamiya's new Prinz Eugen is probably the best kit so far, but how many kits of Prinz Eugen were announced (Samek, HP-Models, WSW, PitRoad)? I'm also building WWII 1/700 ships, but I hope, that some manufactures will release kits of earlier kits. In the moment I'm learning scratch building to fill the hugh gap in my collection caused by ommission of some periods and some navies. This was planned to give freedom from surfacing or snorkeling for extended periods, along with high speed underwater transit. The system ran on hydrogen peroxide, which was decomposed to water vapor plus oxygen, mixed with a sulphur free synthetic diesel oil and burned in the turbine. The planned U-boats, Type XVIII and Type XXVI W were still under construction at the end of the war. They resembled somewhat the Types XXI and XXIII electroboots that emerged near the end of the war. The large Type XVIII, which greatly resembled the Type XXI, had twin Walther turbines and was 235 in length, 20 ft in beam, with surface displacement of 1,485 and 1,652 tons submerged. The smaller Type XXVI was to be 184 ft in length, 18 ft beam, with a displacement of 842 tons surfaced, 926 submerged. Other variants were on the drawing boards. The British did try a peroxide boat in the '50's, HMS Explorer, which was known as "HMS Exploder" due to the accidents with the volatile peroxide. Overall, the problems with concentrated hydrogen peroxide and instability of same were overwhelming.
