Gollin" Subject: Pearl Harbour era camouflage In the latest issue of Warship International (No. 3, 2001), there is a letter from Don S Montgomery of the Naval Media Centre regarding colour film outage from Pearl Harbour which shows various ships. In late May or Early June USS Nevada is shown departing for the USA painted in “Measure 11” – but he can’t say whether it is Navy Blue or Sea Blue. The destroyer tender Dobbin is painted “in a blue pattern”. In late February, or early March, Nevada is shown still painted in “pre-war Measure 1 scheme and the Measure 1 is a dark blue, not a dark gray”. One film shows Lexington in “Measure 1, using a blue paint”, she is passing the California wreck “at Fox-3” wearing “weather-faded blue Measure 1” The coverage of the re-floating of the West Virginia showing her in a “faded blue paint scheme”. The Lexington is shown in October 1941 at Bremerton in “Measure 1 also a dark blue with light tops”. He states all the film is technicolor, and notes where he compares colours. He gives reference numbers for all the film clips I'm afraid I don't know whether this is "old" or "new" news, but he seems very sure of his facts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Edward F Grune" Subject: Re: Carrier flight deck decals Joe was looking for US carrier flight deck number decals. While not decals per se, TLAI enterprises offers a font pack that will allow you to print either solid or outlined carrier deck numerals. Perhaps someone on the List who has an ALPS printer and is 'sort of' in the decal business could take the ball and run with it. Why are most (at least, most that I've seen) 1/700 ship models waterline? Thanks: Charlie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Gordon E. Hogg" Subject: Re: ZARA class in Germany For Steve Wiper and SMML In August 1936 the ZARA-class heavy cruiser GORIZIA visited Germany. On 24 July 1936 GORIZIA received orders to proceed from the Italian port of Taranto to represent Italy during the Olympic sailing events at Kiel. Departing the next day, the ship detoured by way of the Bay of Biscay to look after the interests of Italian citizens in Gijon during the early stages of the Spanish Civil War. Proceeding 1 August to the French port of Le Verdon-sur-Mer in the Gironde estuary, GORIZIA then headed north to the entrance of the Kiel Canal at Brunsbuttel, traversing the 98 km without difficulty to dock at Kiel in the Baltic Sea on 6 August 1936. During the port call, German Admiral Raeder's visit aboard was a high point for the crew. GORIZIA departed Kiel on the morning of 19 August. This detailed account is found on pp. 257-263 of the 1937 annual Almanacco Navale Italiano. It is also referred to briefly on p. 8 of Franco Gay's Incrociatori Pesanti Classe Zara (pt.2) (Orizzonte Mare series).
