Ray, Sorry about going to the web with this, but you emails kept bouncing back. Since none of this was personal, I didn't see the harm. >> Hi Rusty. I know you are burdened with other tasks and duties, but I, and have learned, many others are unable to contact via the IPMS NATIONALS Home Page the right person regarding the NAS Oceana tour. Apparently a limited amount of people are allowed and I tried yesterday tto throw my hat in the ring and the trnasmissions were all returned. Can you send somebody my name and email address, flag it, and perhaps they will get back to me, or an alternative contact. Nice airplane model in current FSM...get back to those ships though.....RD Bean << Ray, First, FSM has had that A/C photo FOR OVER 10 YEARS! Why they chose to run it now, I have no idea. I sent a copy of this email to the Tours Chairman for the 2002 Nats. You can contact everyone at the 2002 Convention site on the IPMS/USA web site. Just look for the "Contacts" tab and a pop down menu will reveal the email address of all the Chairmen. Hope this helps. Would any modelers know the answer to the length, width, and thickness of the rail road track in Mississippi and Tennessee during the American Civil War? With all due respect, I disagree with him completely as regards the Battle Line being in other than 5-D Dark Gray. NEVADA, however, WAS in blue when she departed PH for repairs in the States; I read her war diary and it reported her being repainted while in drydock, into "war blue." That means she was NOT in "war blue" at the time of the attack. Here are the excerpts: Friday, April 3, 1942: "With a new coat of war paint on the exterior, the ship is now beginning to look like her self. All old paint on the hull has been chipped off. A coat of red lead applied, then the war blue." Friday, April 10, 1942: "The port side of the hull was being painted today." WeeVee's paint certainly would have been faded when she was raised; it had been badly burned and then submerged for months! Remember too that 5-D Dark Gray was not a neutral gray: it was a purple-blue in the Munsell Color Notation System, and when it "chalked" the blue would have been emphasized. Sea Blue 5-S, on the other hand, would have weathered almost to the tone of Haze Gray by the time WEST VIRGINIA and the others were raised. Don is misinterpreting 60-your-old color film, a medium that is notoriously non-archival. These are reputedly out-takes of John Ford film. Are they originals, or copies? How have they been stored over the last 60 years (temperature and humidity affect color film and prints)? How much of the perceived blue color is actually sky reflectance? There are a lot of suppositions made regarding the Fleet straying from promulgated instructions. Go back and re-read Alan Raven's series from Plastic Ship Modeler, now available on www.shipcamouflage.com; there were only a few specific ships known to be carrying blue at the time of the PH attack. This notion that the Battle Line was in blue is not new: Don has been implying it for a number of years now, all based on these film fragments. Harder evidence is needed. FWIW, the black and white photos of the Battle Line at the time of the attack support 5-D Dark Gray, not 5-S Sea Blue. As I've stated here before, the orthochromatic b/w films in use at the time rendered anything blue in a much lighter gray tone in the finished print than do modern orthochromatic films. Had the battleships been in 5-S, they would not have appeared dark gray in the photos, but rather would have appeared a medium gray. Look at the photos of YORKTOWN in her MS.12 camouflage for an idea of how 5-S Sea Blue appears on orthochromatic film. If not how about plans hull lines so I can scratch build? FDD available plans do not list hull lines. << John, JAG has one coming out. Check out www.modelshipbuilding.com for a picture. I am sure others have it available. Wayne over at Modeler's Junctions can probably get it as well. Steve Pelham, NH -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: schiefet@cs.com Subject: 1/700 waterline ships Does one actually paint a waterline on these or is it assumend the water line is below the water? Steve Pelham, NH -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: RhinoBones@aol.com Subject: 1:600 & 1:500 Scale Ships Judging from all of the pictures I have seen, and from the descriptions of kits for sale, it would seem that most kits made to the 1:500 and 1:600 scale are full hull. Those of you who have built 500 and 600 scale ships, can you verify whether these kits do, or do not, come with full hulls. I am a fan of the full hull display and I am getting tired of carving hulls for the 1:700 scale ships. Would also like to send a note to my English cousins Andy and Vanessa . . . really wish I could be back in the home country and enjoy the celebrations. Have a toast to the Queen on her 50 years of sovereignty, and watch some English football at the Star. Now that my friends, is a party!! Wish you, and all the nationalities who come to this forum, the best in the World Cup. Regards, RhinoBones PS - The French have been upset by Senegal in their opening game. So go to Senegal if you want to party. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: John Snyder Subject: Colourcoats Additions We received another shipment of paint today, including the first of the Modern colours. Now available: C 02, Matt Black; C 03, Matt White; M 09, German Navy Gray; M 10, German Navy Deck Gray. The matt black and matt white are in response to modelers who asked that these colours be added to the line. The black, for instance, will suffice for USN WW2 Dull Black, and the white for USN WW2 5-U which was used for countershading.
