Could some kind soul out there save me hours of work messing about with % and remind me of the amount. << A 1:700 scale drawing would need to be enlarged by 16.7%, i.e. multiply by 1.167. Does anybody out there have any information on: 1) How to get up close and personal with the SS United States in Philadelphia? Is there a boat cruise that goes by it? Any chance of getting down to the quayside, or actually on-board? 2) Accomodations in New York City. There must a million hotels there, does anybody have any recommendations on a good place for a family to stay that is close to the touristy sites, perferably not costing an arm and 3 dozen legs? Please contact me off-list at r2brown@canada.com Cheers Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: JFR1945@aol.com Subject: Re: 1:500 "Teacher" Models >> I have 4 World War II era 1:500 scale "teacher" models, in very good to excellent condition, by Framburg and Comet. Thet are: HMS Renown, HMS Dorsetshire, KM Prinz Eugen and IJN Nachi. I am interested in selling them, and will entertain serious offers. If you are looking for bargains to turn them over to make money, forget it. << Bill, If you have a Framburg CA stamped "Dorsetshire" I would be happy to buy it for any semi-reasonable price. I thought they only had a RN CA marked "Devonshire" in 1:500. Thanks, John Reeder -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Robert & Rose Brown Subject: Profile Warship Volume 4 Hi all: Profile Warship Volume 4 was published, but it is a book dealing specifically with HMS Belfast. By John Wingate, it is hardbound, with 120 pages and 100 illustrations (well, according to the blurb on the back of my HMS Eagle volume). I've seen it from time to time on ABE, so it does exist. As others have noted, there was never a further bound volume of individual profiles after Volume 3. Many thanks to those who mentioned that the last one was Volume 40 on the De Ruyter. Now I know for sure that I only need the US Monitors title to complete my set. Cheers Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: USS TRIPOLI I was reading the list of ships on the Naval Vessel Register and the disposition of some of the older ones. I noticed that the USS TRIPOLI is in the custody of the US ARMY. Any one know why? Do they actually sail the ship or is it inactive? Mike NAVYDAZE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Vacuform / P.E. suggestion Hi; I wonder if any of the Photo Etch manufacturers here have any extra manufacturing capacity or are looking for new products to produce. Or does anyone here work with vacuform? I'd like to be able to buy P.E. or vacuform sails for 1:1200 scale ships for the 1550- 1850 period. Possibly even 1:2400 scale sails. The Skytrex, Navwar, GHQ, and Hallmark (1:2400) I buy have cast white metal sails which look much too thick. Vacuform sails would be acceptable, and probably cheaper. Contact me off list to discuss this more. Thanks. It is, however, very simple to operate provided you have the material packs of plastic sheets that come with it << OH YES!!; We used one of these almost 30 years ago to form turrets and gun shields for our 1:1200 scratch built Russo-Japanese and WWI wargame models. With a little care we could form some very nice turrets and shields, not to mention lifeboats. We had a hard time getting the pre drilled plastic sheets so we made a jig for the drill press to drill our own. My Vac-u-form dissapeared many years ago. Does anyone know where I could find one? What does that sound like? I know 5-U was white.... I'll be in northern Mass and southern Maine this week and was looking for suggestions on marine related sights in the area. Any suggestion? Thanks Charlie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Poutre, Joseph A" Subject: Re: Brazil's Sao Paulo From: "Bill TGH" >> Brazil has a model of the FOCH (1:1, no photo-etched) I have a FOCH (1:400)(alas no photo-etched) has anyone jumped on the bandwagon? I've just seen one reversed image with Skyhawks parked on the wrong side, a caption noting how this was the first time NAVAL pilots have flown naval planes from a carrier (some legal issues, like Italy's) and was VERY intrigued... So, what has changed? Weapons, Radar, colours etc? << I, too, have that model, bought with the express purpose of converting her. If you want some pretty good photos of her you can go to the Brasilian Navy website: http://www.mar.mil.br/mb1.htm If you don't read Portugese, it's under "Acervo Fotográfico", then click on "Navios". There's even one shot of her with the "Minas Gerais". From what I can tell, the radars haven't changed much, the paint colors and deck markings appear the same, but the guns have all been removed, and there are some new pieces of equipment when the guns were. Also, you're going to need A-4s and SH-3s in 1/400 scale. I have an example of each, from one of the Enterprise kits, sent to me by a generous fellow modeler. The A-4 will need some work to convert it to a casting prototype, since the model version is noticeably different from the later A-4KUs that Brazil obtained from Kuwait. Plus, I've never cast anything before, so I don't know how well they're going to turn out. I hope that the Sao Paulo will take a trip up to New York harbor, where I can photograph her from every angle. :-) If there is anyone out there who has any contacts in the Brasilian Navy, tell them NYC is a great place for shore leave. Of course, I'd also love a PE set for the Foch/Sao Paulo, though I know it's probably a limited seller. Is l'Arsenal listening?
