It is an excellent model, but only 95% complete. Where can he obtain fittings for the 4" guns? The barrels and mounts are completed, but he needs everything else, sights, training & elevation equipment, etc. He would also like to install the AA guns. Any suggestions for this large scale? Photo-etch suppliers do not go this large. Gene Larson Alexandria, Virginia Member, NRG -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Chris Langtree" Subject: S-boats Hi Richard As far as I can tell I am correct. This was a confused action but what is certain is that no attack was made on Birmingham (the cruiser) at all. The only attack was on Kelly. Other accounts attribute the ramming to failed steering on the schnellboote. It may be that Bulldog's account of the s-boat sinking was wrong and she did make it back home. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SAMI ARIM Subject: 1/700 Ratlines >> any chance of making a ratlines set available in 1/700? The only source I know so far is the GMM merchant ship set and with all the 1/700 predreadnought era kits coming out I think I could use quite some of them. I mean, scratchbuilding ratlines in 1/700 is NO FUN AT ALL - tried it once so far and it should remain a once in a lifetime experience..-:). << Pieter, If you can convince me that there is enough models for a 1/700 scale ratlines, I would definitely produce a set. As for the moment I don't think there is enough kits. Scratchbuilding 1/700 ratlines, I can imagine, should be pretty impossible. Even drawing them in the computer was very tedious. Regards, Sami Arim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Kursk There is an update on their web site as to the theory now of what happened to the men trapped in the 9th compartment. Quote:... from the papers that were found in Kolesnikov's pocket, it is possible to presume that he had taken the command upon himself. Besides the note, he had in his pocket a list of all 23 men that were still alive then. There was a tick mark beside each name. In all likelihood, from time to time, Kolesnikov held a roll call of the men with him. He did this at least twice “ at 1.00 p.m. and 3.00 p.m. What was the morale of the men in the 9th compartment? Since they were professionals they understood full well the tragedy of the situation. However, there was no panic. Now it is possible to say this with complete confidence. An exhaustive answer to this question was given by the doctors that examined the bodies that were brought to the surface. Comment: They would have known that they were doomed. But while they were waiting, and as professionals, couldn't Kolesnikov or one of the men log the events. Important information like an explosion, time, probable cause (rogue torpedo), what they were doing before the tragedy struck, how they came to be trapped where they were, conditions in the compartment, etc. should have been their last actions. The information would have helped greatly in any inquiry of the accident and made them heroes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject: Re: ratlines If you need "cargo net" type material -- check your local hardware store. There is a material made [2" wide in rolls] for use in sealing the connections of sheetrock as a base for plaster to cover the vertical joints that abut. It is too large for your scale unless you can do some modification. Regards, John - Seattle -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "John Rule" Subject: Best Book I have a fairly sizeable library, including a large number of books on ships and naval history. Last week I received from White Ensign a copy of The Kellys by Chris Langtree, which from first impressions is likely to move into first place in my collection. The book is well organized, well researched, well illustrated and has excellent drawings. It is by far the best single class warship monograph in my collection and may qualify as the overall best naval book. The approach to organization of the book is very professional, which makes it's use as a research tool very valuable. Even though the history of Royal Navy warships may not interest all tastes, I highly recommend the book to all. The only detraction is nothing to do with the book, but is a reflection of the accuracy of the research and reporting. The "colours" used in the actual camouflage schemes lack colour being almost totally grays. I guess if they had been more colourful they wouldn't have qualified as camouflage. A hearty "WELL DONE" to Chris and to his collaborators. Sincerely, John Rule -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: LCI655@webtv.net (Matty) Subject: L.C.I. (L) Do you have an L.C.I. (L), with bow doors, and what is the price????? Sincerely.... Matty..... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Shaya Novak" Subject: Lindberg Minesweeper I just got ahold of the Directions form a member in New Zealand. Lindberg lost the directions. It will be here before xmas. I'm still looking for directions for the LSD. They lost those too. When these kits come out there will be decals for all the ships in the class. I have viewed the official Spanish Navy site and Bazan shipbuilders site- I need detail photos of just about everything. I have two sets of drawings in scale, and they are pretty descriptive, but they are drawings-not the prototype. I thought there was a PdA photobook available in Spanish, but I cannot locate it on the net. Any help would be appreciated. Bob O'Connor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: John Snyder Subject: More Colourcoats News Barry Keeler, our Paintmeister, has been busy. The USN WW2 antifouling red is considerably different from the modern colour, and represents the first expansion of the USN WW2 colours since we introduced them last year. There will be more to come later this year. Next to come: 12 Kriegsmarine colours, now in production. As usual, there are some new recent pictures of full size warships including a great portrait of Ticonderoga class cruiser USS Vicksburg, taken in the Arabian Gulf on June 3rd. and a shot of type 23 frigate HMS Portland, boarding an Iraqi ship in the Arabian Gulf. The gallery is at http://modelwarship.com/gallery11/ In the diary of my model of the type 21 frigate HMS Ambuscade, I've added a story about building the harpoon grid on the flight deck, and preparing it for fibre optics later on. Soon to come are more sensors on the mast and a description of how I plan to build the foremast. The diary is at http://modelwarship.com/model/ In the "Editorial" section I have included (with permission of course) that great story from Tony Ireland, about an event at Normandy a few days after D Day. Tony is a great writer, and makes this story fascinating and fun to read. Find Tony's yarn at http://modelwarship.com/comment/ Please come to the site and have a look. There's nothing on that site that's going to try to get money from you. If you know of any sites we haven't got in our links section that we should have, please add them at http://modelwarship.com/links/index.cfm (You can add the site yourself using the button, but it will only appear on the site once I've checked that it's a ship model related link.) Thanks to all of you for your support. I hope you continue to find interesting and enjoyable things on my Modelwarship72 site.
