After the initial ambush which severely damaged HMS Kelly, the S-boats regrouped and attempted another strike. Although contact was made several times, the Germans were unable to make another torpedo run due to heavy fire which damaged S-33, wounded the Kommandant, and drove her to the apparent safety of a fog bank. Some time later, as the crew probably congratulated themselves on a narrow escape, HMS Bulldog burst through the fog ahead of S-33, leaving no time for evasive action. S-33's bow struck Bulldog and scraped heavily along the side of the destroyer. The surprise was mutual; the British destroyers began firing wildly in all directions. Before either party could overcome their surprise, a second British destroyer appeared directly astern of the first. It was the crippled HMS Kelly under tow from Bulldog, and there was no time to avoid a second collision. The second jolt was more severe than the first, tearing off a 9 meter long section of the S-33's bow and knocking over a motorman who accidentally closed the throttle leaving the boat dead in the water approximately 60 meters astern of two very angry British Destroyers firing from all guns. The British reported the boat as sunk. Onboard the S-33, the assessment was nearly as grim. The crew set a smoke screen and prepared the boat for scuttling, while chief engineer Werner Eigenbrod and his men scurried around inspecting damage. Either as a result of flooding or enemy fire, S-33 expected to sink immediately. Yet neither event occurred. Kelly and Bulldog remained on course and vanished into the fog. S-33's number VII bulkhead held fast. The undamaged Mercedes engines sprang to life, pumps strained at full pressure to keep out the flood of water from numerous holes and S-33 made a steady 9 knots homewards. With barely enough fuel, she returned the 200 miles back to base, shredded but ennobled by her close encounter with the enemy. Engineers of the Marinebauamt were very impressed. S-33 proved the Schnellboot design could indeed survive immense damage and live to fight another day. A few weeks later S-33 returned to battle and soldiered on until 1945 where, stranded on an island in the Adriatic, she was delivered a Coup de Gras by a torpedo from MTB 698. Mr. McCaffrey is perhaps the premier miniature shipbuilder today. In his book he speaks of making ratlines out of nichrome wire and he gives sources of suppliers. One such supplier is Pelican wire Co. Inc. 6266 Taylor Road Naples FL 33942. The only thing smaller than this would be surgical wire or ophthalmic suture. How you would work with that I don't know. Try Loyalhanna Dockyard in the States, or Dean's Marine (http://www.deansmarine.co.uk) in the UK. You might also check in with Tom Walkowiak at Floating Drydock, and perhaps Model Expo. Written by Camil Busquets. This may help in your search, I have one and yes it has pretty much what you need, the drawing is ok (plan & starboard only) but the photos are brilliant. Incidently as with all books like this it has a tendancy to concentrate more on the airwing (in this case Harriers er..sorry Matadors). If you cannot locate it contact me perhaps I can help with specific scans or something. Up here in mid Michigan I haven't seen any of Revells new S-100 class S boat kits on the shelves of any of the hobby shops.. In fact one I visit in flint Michigan a Ryder's hobby shop doesn't even have a listing for it...I was downfounded! regards Bill C -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Rod Dauteuil Subject: Movie "K19-The Widowmaker" Good morning, This morning I caught the preview for the movie "K 19 - The Widowmaker". It is due to be released next month, and stars Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. From the web, it is based on an early 1960's nuclear mishap aboard a Russian sub which left several sailors dead from radiation exposure. It looks interesting, but then again all previews make the movie look interesting. But with a ballsy guy like Harrison Ford, how can you go wrong? I have viewed the official Spanish Navy site and Bazan shipbuilders site- I need detail photos of just about everything. I have two sets of drawings in scale, and they are pretty descriptive, but they are drawings-not the prototype. I thought there was a PdA photobook available in Spanish, but I cannot locate it on the net. Any help would be appreciated. << Hello from Spain, you can get the book in the Librería Robinson in Madrid, y enclose the link of the catalogue (is more easy because the catalogue is only in Spanish). They are very serious and they ship to USA. The link is: http://www.nauticarobinson.com/fichalibro.php?ID=1617 For SMMlies, librería Robinson, in my opinion is the best source for Spanish and Latin Navies I'll take a look in my archives, and I think that I have more photos, when I get it I e mail to you. If you need any thing more please let me know. Well, it didn't take too long for the current web master to get us back up and going at our current URL. The site is back up and in full operation. We are currently getting set up with a new server to (hopefully) prevent these problems in the future, or at least keep them to an absolute minimum. We also have secured a domain name for the flagship site to make moving around (if we have to) easy and quick. I'll notify everyone when all the arrangements are final so you can bookmark the new URL. Thanks to all who have put up with this crap and sent letters of support. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc.
