Friedrich The FriedrichFiles http://www.geocities.com/friedkappes/flagship.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Robert Lockie" Subject: Schnellboot ID Dear Experten I have another query about one of the photos in WP15. On page 45 there is a photograph captioned as S-111 after its capture by the RN. However, I have seen a similar (the sailors are in different positions) picture before, in Cooper's "The Buccaneers", in which the same boat is identified as the one encountered by Robert Hichens (MGB64) after a gun battle during the night of 19/20th November 1941, when it was discovered drifting and abandoned near to the Dutch coast. Jefferson (Coastal Forces at War) refers to the action but claims the boat to be S-41 (p145). Interestingly, although Hummelchen (German Schnellboote - Warship Profile 31), refers to S-41 being abandoned after an action on this date, he claims the boat boarded by the British to have been S-38 after a battle with Hichens on 19/20th November 1940! It certainly shows signs of gunfire damage in the forward part. According to my references, S-111 was lost in March 1942 after being hit by a starshell from HMS Guillemot (Jefferson p145, Hummelchen p169), I do not see any signs of the sort of fire damage that I would expect to see from such a hit on the boat in this photograph. So whichever boat it is, I am inclined to doubt that it is S-111. Any comments? As some of you may be aware, IPMS/USA played a part in this program. Several members were interviewed and a number of us provided background information and leads for the writers and producers. The program deals with all types of modeling (including RC), so I don't know how much of "our" hobby will actually make it to the screen - but hey, it's a show about models! For IPMS members: I'm working with IPMS/USA President Dave Morrissette to get the word out to as many members as possible via the IPMS website and through our email database. In the meantime, please let your fellow modelers know. >> Hello,...
