Sounds interesting. http://www.lonestarmodels.com/ John - Seattle -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Joel Labow Subject: The Cruise of the Raider Wolf All the discussion of Luckner and the Seeadler reminds me of another great WWI German raider skipper. Karl August Nerger was every bit as much of a 'character' and gentleman of the sea as Luckner and took the Wolf on arguably THE most successful surface raiding cruise of both world wars, culminating with a safe return to Germany through the teeth of the RN blockade and the North Sea minefields. This epic cruise has never received the attention which IMHO it deserves. I heartily recommend The Cruise of the Raider Wolf by Roy Alexander (Yale University Press 1939). Mr. Alexander was an allied POW on board Wolf for much of the voyage. Although this is an old book there are lots of copies available in used book stores (123 copies on www.abe.com)...it is well worth including in any ship-lovers library. Joel Labow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: From Russia with love??? Some time ago Steel Navy posted a link to a Russian website Ship Model Construction. This website offers a wide range on ship plans including many of the Russian Imperial Navy vessels. Having just received and examined SMC plans of Borodino, Suvorov, Pobieda and Peresviet let me warn other potential customers that quality of those plans vary from "not very good" to "next to the useless". Having contacted the author of the plans beforehand and being told that quality of the plans was the highiest obtainable I am left with the feeling that many of the old Eastern Block enterprises tend to think that modellers in the West have no way to verify accuracy (or the lack of it) of their work and that we are so naive that we can't tell a workmanship from the pile of dung!!! The list of what is wrong with the drawings of Borodinos and Peresviets is just too long to post it here but if anybody is interested in details please contact me off board. Just for the record - my criticism of SMC does not, of course, extend to Steel Navy website which has not recommended SMC in any way but provided the link only. Well, I do not have a facination with ships being sunk, in fact it still bothers me a little bit. But I do have a facination with ships in mothballs or just before they are going to the breakers. A lot of history in those ships, and sorry to say this guys I think there also may be a couple of spirits in some of them. I have had an encounter of my own on decomissioned ship. Anyway I love to walk the decks and just listen - usually you hear nothing but sometimes you can hear a creak, and sometimes sounds you cannot identify. Also like to look a pictures of these ships. The one thing that always strikes me is the pictures of the Quarter Decks and Focsle'. There are two place where rust and chipping paint seems so out of the ordinary, same way with the bridge of the ships. It is also strange that when you go aboard a lifeless ship you can actually feel that too. A sense of emptiness. Ok that is enough, I don't want to tell any more of my secrets!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Erwin Van Deynze Subject: Re: SMS Seeadler kit If I'm not mistaken, Billings had also a kit of the SMS Seeadler. Woodruff" Subject: Count Von Luckner Count Felix von Luckner died on April 13, 1966 in Malmo, Sweden Kevin W. Woodruff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Richa5011@aol.com Subject: Re: Von Luckner's death in 1931 Dan Jones wrote in response to my original statement: >> Not so. The Count was still alive in (I think ) about 1956 (or there abouts) as he appeared on the old live television show called "This Is Your Life". << Quite correct (as are the others that corrected my mistake). According the the web site listed below, Von Lucker passed away on 13 April 1966. Not sure who I had in mind wth the 1931 date, but it was obviously the wrong officer. FYI - you might find the following site of interest...it is a hotel named for Von Luckner (owned by the family perhaps?) and has a couple of photos that I had not seen before of the Sea Devil. The site is: http://www.emsland-aktuell.com/hotel-graf-luckner/luckner.htm To echo Dan's comments about reading the Thomas book...I grew up reading sea stories. I can recall my father giving me an old book (which I still have) that he thought I might find of interest...By Joe was he right! Though not exactly pure history, both of Thomas' books on Von Luckner are well worth the read. It's a must for a ship builder. It's at 17th and M st. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Jim Mc Subject: VCR ALERT for N. American Viewers..... H-382 << Hi, For those daunting enough, the Danish company Billlings Boats put out a plank on frame wooden model. This is no longer made but tey might have some left or it may be available on E-bay. I have seen it built by a good modeller and it si very impressive. Paul -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "David L.
