Sounds interesting. http://www.lonestarmodels.com/ << Mike West AKA Lonestar has been around for quite a while. Among other things, he has a line of 1/192 scale resin kits of ACW ironclads, among others, the Onandaga and Passaic class monitors, examples of which can be seen in the gallery section of this site. His kits are basic, varying in quality but a good foundation for improving into quite nice models. The prices are reasonable. Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Mark Brown" Subject: Re: Daring Class Destroyers Hi Mike, I don't know if you will find anything at the RAN's recently updated site but it is worth taking a look just to see the panoramic images. http://www.navy.gov.au/ Also, take a look in the "Model Makers Drawings" section, accessible from the Site Directory on the main page. I requested and received in double quick time, a number of plans on CD. I didn't get the Daring plans but various plan, profile and section drawings are available. I think that the movie was taking a bit of literary license, in that the writers probably could not think of the name of another battleship. From what I can find, there were two bombardments of Saipan. On 13-15 June the Fast Battleships under Willis Augustus Lee were released to take a swipe at Saipan. The 7 BB's he had were: WASHINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA, IOWA, NEW JERSEY, SOUTH DAKOTA, ALABAMA, and INDIANA. MISSOURI was not present. The bombardment was not that effective. The Fast Battleships were primarily attached to the carriers and had not practiced the specialized skill of shore bombardment. Oldendorf's "old" BB's were the primary bombardment group, had trained for the technique, and had planned their fire missions all the way from Hawaii. They did somewhat better starting on the 14th. Hope this helps, Roland Mar -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Mackenzie J Gregory Subject: Re: The Cruise of the Raider Wolf Re Joel Labow's comments on WW1 German Armed Merchant Raider Wolf, some SMML readers may be interested to look at my Mac's WEb Log, the URL is at the end of this E-Mail, take a look at two features there: 1. Marauders of the Sea. German Armed Merchant Raiders During WW1, this covers both the cruise of the Wolf, and Von Luckner in Seeadler. 2. The companion piece : Marauders of the Sea. German Armed Merchant Raiders During WW2. I believe too little attention has ever been paid to these exploits of German Commanding Officers and their stoic crews over two world wars. It is interesting, I think, that some people over this SMML forum are giving some attention to them now. Thank you. Mackenzie Gregory Ahoy. Lotta bullets! Anyway, at one point the codetalkers called in firepower from the Missouri. Would the Missouri been there to support the invasion of Saipan? << Missouri was commissioned on 11JUN44, just 4 days before the invasion of Saipan. It is highly unlikely that she managed to sneak away from New York and get into the battle without the Navy knowing about it. The Missouri did enter combat in January 45, however, and was assigned to TG58.2 with Wisconsin. Her first action left Ulithi on 10FEB45 and proceeded to strike Honshu on 16-17FEB, support the Iwo Jima invasion from 19-22FEB, an encore Honshu strike on 25FEB45, a strike on Okinawa on 1MAR and a return to Ulithi on 4MAR45. Here are the BB that were involved in the Marianas Campaign: TG58.7 The Battle Line - far offshore chasing Ozawa! Indiana, Washington, North Carolina, Iowa, New Jersey, South Dakota, Alabama TG52.17 Fire Support Group One (Saipan/Tinian) Tennessee, California, Maryland, Colorado TG52.10 Fire Support Group Two (Saipan/Tinian) Pennsylvania, Idaho, New Mexico Mississippi is also listed as part of the bombardment force in the text, but not in the appendix. Probably assigned to TG52.10. Of the active battleships at the time, the rest were engaged as follows Nevada, Arkansas, Texas - Operation Overlord post action repairs & maintenance New York - Atlantic Fleet gunnery training & cadet crusiers West Virginia - Bremerton, Puget Sound NSY - Pearl Harbor damage repairs Massachusetts - Bremerton, Puget Sound NSY - overhaul & relining Missouri - Post-commissioning trials and initial training Wisconsin - Post-commissioning trials and initial training BTW, the text is Morison's History of USN Ops in WW2, multiple volumes. I also want to DANFS at Haze Grey fro other info. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: Lone Star Models >> Discovered this on th web -- specialty producer -- have no experience nor have I seen his work. Sounds interesting. http://www.lonestarmodels.com/ << I recently bought some Tamiya stuff from Mike West, the owner of Lone Star Models. Mike was responsive via e-mails and my order arrived in a timely manner. For what it is worth, he has made the masters for several of the Squadron True Details aircraft cockpits and also for another well thought of after market resin company whose name escapes me at the moment. He is a regular poster on the RMS newsgroup. Mike Settle -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Donald Woolley Subject: MO at Saipan? David L. Miller wrote: >> I just saw Windtalkers. Lotta bullets! Anyway, at one point the codetalkers called in firepower from the Missouri. Would the Missouri been there to support the invasion of Saipan? << It would be incredible shooting, since the Missouri was in Norfolk VA during the Marianas according to DANFS. The North Carolina was there though-- with her sister the Washington, all four of the South Dakotas and I think even the Iowa. Mostly they protected the carriers but some of them took fire missions. My father was a battery sergeant with the 77th Infantry, and on at least one occasion when acting as a forward observer, he called in the North Carolina when his battery's 155s were not enough. He could never forget the sound the shells made overhead. Take a little time to see them. I also recall, as a kid in the late twenties or early thirties (that's THE late twenties etc., not MY late twenties etc.) a hearing a regular radio program in which the Count told sea stories, and often used a curious squeaking sound somewhere in the program. I never did understand the significance of the sound. Any comments? Franklyn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: National Geographic display Echoing BECJPARKER@AOL's tip about the National Gepographic display in D.C., even though I have not seen it, I have seen an example of Fine Art's work, and have explored their website. I do not have the website address now, but perhaps a SMML member can supply it. Any way, it will be a pleasure for you to visit the website and what they can do. And from what I hear, it will be Nirvana to see their TITANIC. It would be worth it to go out of your way to go to D.C. just to visit the National Geographic exhibit. I hope Fine Art's display will come to Boston someday. Sounds interesting. http://www.lonestarmodels.com/ << Lone Star makes very good resin US Civil War models. I had one and it was well cast and detailed. You'll need to research to add little details, but he does include information on painting and markings, what there were in those days. I recommend them to those interested in early American ironclads.
