Keith Bender ABF-3 av-fuels V-4 div.1980-83 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Naval Academy Ship Model Collection The U.S. Naval Academy has a web page about its superb collection of ship models. Some of them can be seen by going to a site called NAVAL ACADEMY MUSEUM, then clicking on U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY MUSEUM, then clicking on ROGERS SHIP MODEL COLLECTION. This will bring you to a set of annotated slides of some very early magnificent dockyard models. An outstanding feature is one slide that was taken of the interior by means of a medical device similar to an endoscope, inserted through an opening in the hull. It revealed turned ivory stairwell banisters, not normally seen from outside the model, It is akin to the ROV that Ballard uses (many of you guys on Medicare know what an endoscope is). A volunteer model maintence person told me that they have seen many unusual things using this device, things such as signatures, repairs, dutchmen, unbelievable attention to normally unseen features (the banisters, for example), details of construction, etc. The shipbuilders used these models as examples of how the real ship was to be built, in the days before detailed drawings were developed and builders learned how to read them. Therefore it can be safely assumed that these dockyard models are a very close approximation of what the actual ship looked like, and how it was built. I picked up a tip by seeing these slides. Do the fency-schmency carved and painted decorations on a strip of paper, on your benchtop where it is easier to work, and then glue this strip in the proper place on the model. those old timey craftsmen were no dummies!!!!! Click and enjoy. Hood in the shop. SRP is $45.50, but the usual 15% SMML discount brings it to $38.70. S&H will be about $7 with DC (not sure what the new rates & zones will be after next week) - I'll make the price $45 flat and absorb any difference to anywhere in the USA.
