Guns barrels cut off, radars gone, fire controls and so on. More importantly they no longer have any preservation efforts done on them and are usually open to the elements with hatches open and so on. Probably Philly does a better job of protecting them since they seem to get the mothballed warships that have any hope of returning to active duty. On the AOE, AOR etc these are new ships and could return to active - that is if they have kept all the parts for them or are stored onboard. As for the older ones, problem with them is that they would have to use other ships for spares as in most case none of these parts are manufactured or are available anymore. But us guys (and gals) that love these old girls, I guess I should not complain as they are still around for us to admire. Mike NAVYDAZE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: LPH's as targets Hi SMMLies, To add on the comment about damage they can take other then flightdeck accidents is the Tripoli LPH 10 hit a mine in the gulf war. She had two fwd JP-5 tanks, 7-19-0-J and 7-23-0-J opened up but very few injuries and no deaths as far as I know. I do have some good color photos of her in drydock waiting for repair. The gole is very large, not as large as the torpedo damage we seen in WWll but big enough. If it would have been in the engineroom or fireroom area it could have been major problems and if both rooms were opened to the sea they may have lost her or come very close to it. Those ships have a large open area in for each compartment that would have taken on a lot of water. There's my 2 cents. KTB -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Club video equipment To Vincent McCullough Thanks for your helpful suggestion about video equipment for club demonstrations. The U.S.S. Constitution Model Shipwright Guild, in Boston, did indeed have a demonstration of the set-up you described, early in this year, using borrowed equipment. We have since been trying to find a way to fund the procurement of a system for ourselves in the near future. Such a system, although very desirable, is limited to external viewing only, The endoscope (or similar equipment) allows for internal viewing as well, but the humungous cost ($75,000 for the endoscope alone) makes it Pie-In-The-Sky for us, and for most clubs as well. I don't know the details of how the U.S.Naval Academy has access to the endoscope they use. Gordon Walker is scheduled to demonstrate his endoscope at the Peabody Museum (in Salem, Massachusetts, I believe) on Columbus Day weekend, but for a limited audience, it may even be by invitation only. I mean if one was going to do a documentary on models, how could anyone completely ignore or not mention IPMS's contribution and history in this field. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. Regsrds D.P -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Steve Bennell" Subject: HMS Ark Royal (CVS) I am thinking of getting Revell's 1:700 HMS Ark Royal kit. I believe this builds into a replica of the CVS as she was during the 1991 Gulf War. But, I would like to finish her as she is after the recent refit. Some of the changes necessary, such as removal of the Sea Dart system and inclusion of Merlin helicopters, are fairly obvious. However, I'm sure there are many "not so obvious" changes. I would therefore be very grateful for any advice on what these might be and on where I should focus my attention. Any advice on the selection of suitable "after market" items would also be appreciated.
