The URL is http://www.tracks-n-troops.com/index.htm but the proprietor is on holidays until 15 July. Images of the guns are provided on the 1/76 AFV Workshop at URL http://home.hccnet.nl/h.van.oerle/ but the figures aren't shown and I am reluctant to order them sight unseen. MGM is more correctly MGM Modellbau of Germany but I can't find a wesite. Perhaps some of the Braille Scale people can provide more information. David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Torpedo dropping devices Hi Franklyn, Regarding those aft torpedo tubes on USN PTs: both the forward and aft tubes were trained out at an angle from the axis of the PT prior to firing (by compressed air), by means of a crank handle that was normally stowed on top of the midships deckhouse. The torpedoes thus left the tubes at an angle away from the boat's direction of travel, before settling down on the aimed course. I'm sure Al Ross can add LOTS more information here.... I'm going to build a 1/700 bird with a cockpit - seats, controls, rudder pedals, straps. Then I'm going to the eye doctor, and after that the loony bin. Oi. There is a recently released model of a Russian torpedo boat, a type that launched its fish down a trough and over the stern, then turned out of the path of the torp before it took off for the target. I cannot remember where I saw the articles about it. Joe Poutre -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "John Rodriguez Asti" Subject: Re: Colossus class carriers Dear Roberto: I am currently building a 1/700 scratch model of the Colossus class carriers with the purpose of producing resin copies. I have concluded the mold of the hull, and have made first resin copies with satisfactory results. In order to finish the project, I still lack to conclude some small pieces (the gun mounts and the aircraft are very hard to build in this scale), but if everything goes well, I hope that the first models for sale will be available at the beginning of September. This kit will include some details in photoetch, and will represent HMS Ocean or HMS Veangance at the beginning of the 50's. If you wish, I can send you some photographs of the hull and other concluded parts. When the first models are ready, I will launch a Web page with details about how to buy them. If you want to have more information about this kit please contact me: rodri002@yahoo.com Regards, John Rodriguez Asti -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "bruce simard" Subject: Mirage U-Boat Kits Folks, As I'm sure many of you know, Mirage of Poland has been producing 1/400 U-Boat kits for several years now. There are approximately 15 kits ranging from the Type IIA through the Type IXD-2. I noticed several days ago a review on one of the on line hobby magazines for Mirage photoetch for a Type VII. After surfing about, I found Squadron has them in stock. Has anyone seen or worked with these new products? Needless to say, I've been waiting for PE to be released for this series. They are nice kits, well researched, and decently priced. With the PE add on, U-Boat collectors can now have a virtual fleet. One kit (40414) that is really interesting, is the Type VIIC (U-295). This boat has the extended wintergarden plus 2 "Biber" 1 man minisubs. Those of us with interest in U-boats need to check out the series. Bruce -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Torgeson Roger A KPWA" Subject: Colosus class The Heller Arromanche kit was released by the Netherlands IPMS as the Karel Doorman in a limited issue (500 kits?). It has resin parts for the angle flight deck, new island, aircraft some gun mounts along with other parts that I can't remember right now, and a brass set. A friend in the UK (Andy Jones)told me of the kit and then sent one to me. Andy if you see this, how about passing along any information you have on who you obtained the kit from. I had a SMML member send me a few photos of the Argentine carrier. looks like it can be modeled from the Karel Doorman with just a few changes. Roger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: stillmo@mb.sympatico.ca Subject: Re: COLOSSUS CLASS CVLs......where are the kits?? In a back issue of PSM I built the ARROMANCHES as HMCS BONAVENTURE, a great deal of chopping and hacking and scratching, but the one only time effort has paid off in dividends as its a hit at public displays up here in Canada. I have looked for another ARROMANCHES kit to no avail so I could build her as either HMCS MAGNIFICENT or HMCS WARRIOR, axial deck post war carriers that would not have a required angled deck. Considering that so many were built, so many were transferred to foreign navies and flags, and so many underwent modifications, I am so disappointed that a resin manufacturer, and I am pointing my finger here at the wonderfull folks at White Ensign Models, have not produced a generic Colossus CVL hull and island---heck, the rest can be done by a skilled modeller to modify these to whatever. The hull lines of the different ships of the sister classes were almost identical, the classic sculpted hurricane bows with port and starboard knuckles, the elliptical stern and easy to create island could enable many of us Cold War navy builders a chance to purchase (as in making money, WEM!!) multi hulls to build different variants. The airplanes are IN PLACE NOW, available, we just need the hull and flight deck and we are happy campers. If I had the knowledge and skills to make and build a master I would, but I would not know where to begin. I love WEM and their products but I think they should re focus a little more on RN, wartime and postwar ship classes as there are wide and huge voids to fill. Ray D. Bean -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: HARUSAME >> Tamiya 1/700 scale destroyer Harusame: Ok looking at the box for colour I'm saying a dark grey, so the humbrol dark grey would do...what about the WEM IJN range...what would best suite this ship??? << Hi Andrew, When Randy Short and I put out the IJN paint chip set, I developed a partial list of IJN ships and the particular grey they wore at given periods (anyone having a question about a specific ship colour, I may have the answer). Unfortunately, I don't have information for HARUSAME or her sisters. Most--but not all--of the DDs for which I found information were painted in Maizuru Grey. That is IJN 03 in the WEM Colourcoats range. If you can find info regarding which of the 4 major naval bases (Sasebo, Kure, Maizuru, Yokosuka) HARUSAME operated from or refitted at, that will tell you the colour to use. Otherwise, try Maizuru Grey. Closed Sun+Mon. You can easely combine the two, the museum and the shop. Not much to see naval wise in the museum, a river patrol boat and the Royal Yacht. But it does have a wonderfull collection on WW1, next to the Army Museum is the Brussels Air Museum, wich has a lot of authentic WW1 planes, some are unique examples! The museum shop has a nice stock on naval books. Some pics I took and some other inormation in on my site: http://users.pandora.be/wienne It has been a while since I visited 16 escadron, so I don't really know what they have shipwise... BTW across the street of 'le 16' is a bookshop wich, from what I've been told also has a nice collection of books. There is also a shop called "Point 50" on the Boulevard Lemonnier, the main North-South lane in the city centre (subway station Aneessens), But I haven't visited this one yet, so no further comment on that. Fact of the matter is that modelships are not very popular over here in Belgium and beside the omnipresent Tamiya (1/350, 1/700 is virtually unfindable), Airfix and Revell boxes, the rest is rather meagre. Outside of Brussels, there is a good shop in Antwerp (Verboven, Eimarkt, In the immediate vicinity of the famous square. Also Christiaensens (a toy-shop chain) in Ghent (Side street of the Veldstraat) has a nice stock on ship-models, and also in Ghent is Verborgh in the Kortrijksepoortstraat, they have a bit of everything, mainly RC and wood kits. Both Ghent and Brussels are easy to reach from Brussels by train... And in Ghent at Sint Pieters (saint Peters station) take tram 1, and you'll pass both the Kortrijksepoortstraat and the Veldstraat, couldn't be easier...) Don't know for Antwerp, but I usually walk from the station via the Meir to the Eimarkt... Antwerp is also the home of the National shipping Museum (Nationaal Scheepvaartsmuseum) In Het Steen... It's an old castle or something in the old harbour. Inside are a nice collection of models, and outside are several boats and ships. Our national pride, the Mercator, used to be a sail training ship, lies in Ostend, has recently (2 years ago) been restored and has a nice museum below decks. That's about it I'm afraid... Erwin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: RhinoBones@aol.com Subject: Help The Library of Congress This note came across my desk today and I am sure that there are many SMMLies out there who have much to contribute. Doesn't matter if you were in the Navy, Coast Guard, Army, Air Force or the best of them all, the Marine Corps . . . all veterans from all eras are welcome. Even though this particular call is made to US veterans, it is just as applicable to every serviceman from every nationality. This is the only way that we have to ensure that our own little piece of history lives after we are gone. It is also the best way that I know to honor the memory of the comrades who didn't get to come home. Regards, RhinoBones >> Remembering Our Vets Before Its Too Late..... Please disseminate to your friends, relatives and listings... WHAT'S UP: Hundreds of veterans gathered aboard the USS Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City on June 6? the 58th anniversary of the D-Day landings? to celebrate and rally support for the Library of Congress' ongoing Veterans History Project. The initiative aims to encourage Americans of all ages to collect first-person accounts of those who served the nation in wartime. The library is collecting and preserving oral histories and documentary materials from veterans of World War I through the Persian Gulf War, as well as stories from the home front. WHAT'S NEXT: With elderly veterans of the World War II and Korean War eras passing away at a rate of 1,600 a day, time is of the essence in collecting and preserving memories of their wartime experiences, project organizers say. The project will "allow the next generation to learn about? those who have fought to sustain the freedom that we find challenged throughout the world today," said Librarian of Congress James Billington. More information on the project is available at: http://www.loc.gov/folklife/vets or by calling project managers at (202) 707-4916. << -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Japanese Steel Deck Colors >> Another thing: just make sure that the decks are really made of steel. In early war most of the Japanese ships had linoleum decks and only after they discovered how inflammable this material was they changed it by steel plates (this is very common with destroyers). This mistake is very important to take into account, that's why I have my destroyer Yunagi (1944 version) still with linoleum decks!!!!!!!!!!! Bad move indeed...how should I change her??? It is already complete and in diorama!!!!!!! << I believe the word you wanted to use was "Flammable". Also, I understand that the linoleum deck covering was removed the interiors of the ships, not the exterior decks. Maybe the IJN deemed it a necessary evil as opposed to slick steel decks? The linoleum was used both as traction and insulation. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Kriegsmarine Hydrofoil Schnellboote The vessel that Tony Ireland mentioned is shown in photos in "Fast Fighting Boats", along with drawings for projected hydrofoil schnellboote (at least one of which was to be semi-submersible--it was to lie in wait submerged, then surface and go foil-borne when a target approached); some very "Buck Rogers" stuff. There are other views of the completed craft in the German language version of the above book (sorry, can't think of the title offhand--it's in the WEM library at South Farm and Caroline and I are in Nevada at the moment). As for Enron and Worldcom stock, I sold both and bought Xerox.... I just got the first test shot for the brass today, and it is great, but needs a little tweak here and there. Looks like the unit price will be about $45 for the sail and details, new 88 mm & 20 mm guns, a full set of p/e with bow net cutter, intake & exhaust grilles, prop blades (for the daring souls) and railings, including an intricate gun rail for the sail. I'll post a jpeg on the website soon.
