Lionyg -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: stillmo@mb.sympatico.ca Subject: Re: stress dents on hulls when I built my 350th WADDELL/(Benj.Stoddert), and FANNING (Knox) resin kits for my diorama, I had considered for a long time doing the stress dents on the bows and further aft. Doing it TO LOOK CORRECT, OR BELIEVABLE was another thing, and I wasnt about to ruin two one only perfectly and beautifully cast hulls in attempting this visual effect. I have a plan as how to do it, but I did not have the courage because once started, there was no going back. Perhaps try it out on an old unneeded resin hull for experimention, but didnt have any of those around either. RDB -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Edd Pflum Subject: Re: Really, really accurate models Oddly enough, Mike, the box art for the ROG Elco and Vosper MTBs show very prominent "oil-canning"...on the wooden structure. Some days ya eat the bear, some days da bear eats you.... Edd -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "LG Cranford" Subject: APL 46 Hello, I would like to say re the APL 46 ("floating hotel" of the US Navy) that I was stationed aboard her from the latter part of 1947 through 1948 and she exists. I have pictures to prove it. If anyone who served aboard her during those years I would appreciate an E-mail to the following: Cranfoo@otmail.com. Also, if there are models of her out there, I would surely be interested in acquiring one. Please drop me a line. Thanks, Cranfoo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Rod Dauteuil" Subject: Merchant vessel company decals William, I've thought about this very type of project for a while now. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of merchant vessels available on the market. I've been considering one of the Imex freighters. But anyway, as for decals I plan to use model railroad decals. There are a whole host of decals available for containers, and using any of the scales O, HO, or N should give you whatever size decals you need. Off hand, I know there is APL, Matson, Japan Line, Evergreen, P+O, to name a few. These may be a little too modern for what you're doing, but maybe it will help? The thought occured to me while I was sittin' on the dock of the bay (only joking!). Actually I was at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco watching all the freighters go by and seeing those big letters on the sides of the hull. I immediately thought intermodal contrainer decals would do the job just fine. I classify this as number 638 in the "someday-I-will-do" file. By the way, is the Burleigh basically the same mold as the C-3 Hawaiian Pilot freighter? I wonder if they adapted the mold like they did with the Mission Capistrano oiler / Merchant tanker kits? Rod P.S. Christmas wish lists already? Pretty hard to think of Christmas when we're enjoying 90 degree heat in Massachusetts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: USS Gloucester >> Does anyone know of any models of Gloucester or kits of Corsair? << BlueJacket Shipcrafters (www.bluejacketinc.com) used to offer a kit of CORSAIR. While not currently in production, they do make the plans available. Call Suzi Marger (the new co-owner) at 1-800-448-5567. Al Ross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: EFGRUNE@flash.net Subject: Commercial Shipping Company Names William Swan was looking for a source of decals for commercial shipping company names. I built the IMEX Container Ship as a member of the Evergreen Line. Accurate - no, but I liked the green hull. I used some HO-scale railroad decals for the white EVERGREEN on the hull sides and for the house symbol on the stack. John Sheridan will love to hear me say that they were Microscale brand from from a Container Car set. While you might not be able to find the exact decals for your desired ship names - check the railroad decals to see what they have. You may be able to find some plain block letters similar to the font used on your intended project. Ed Mansfield, TX -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "David Clark" Subject: Really, really accurate models Mike Donegan's post about "oil canning" and "really, really accurate models" has hit the nail on the head in regard to some of my current models. I have a collection of 1/76 landing craft in various stages of construction and I have noted that photographs of the original craft all show battered and "oil canned" hulls that are nothing like the smooth hulls of the models. I have managed to replicate the dents from collisions but haven't yet come up with a way to create scale "oil canning" but I will give it a try now. Any suggestions would be most welcome. David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: RhinoBones@aol.com Subject: HEADLINE: NEW WARSHIPS Below is a news clipping concerning the newest ships scheduled to enter the Royal Navy. Surely these ships will be the catalyst for a new series of models. Regards, RhinoBones >> HEADLINE: NEW WARSHIPS 'MOST ADVANCED IN THE WORLD' The new home of the Navy's next generation of warships was being announced today by the minister for the armed forces Adam Ingram. The new six new Type 45 destroyers will be replacements for the current Type 42 vessels and are expected to be the most advanced air defence ships in the world. The first three of the 7,350-tonne Type 45 destroyers to enter service in 2007 will be named Daring, Defender and Dragon. The larger hulls of the new Type 45 destroyers will allow a considerable margin for additional weapons and equipment, yet their stealth design will make them more difficult for enemy radar to pick up. Increased use of hi-tech equipment in the new Type 45 destroyers will mean a 30% cut in crew members compared with the Type 42s, while the new ships will have the capability to accommodate up to 60 Royal Marines and their equipment. New and more economical electrical propulsion in the new Type 45 destroyers will give 30% more range than the old Type 42s and a stronger hull gives improved protection against blast. More than twice as many air defence missiles can be carried on board the new Type 45 destroyers, while space and weight have been reserved for a 155mm shore-bombardment gun, cruise missile launchers and anti-ship missiles if required. The new 176 metre long HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark will have a speed of 18 knots and a ship's company of 325. Military lift capability for each will be 305 troops with an overload of a further 405. A floodable well-dock has the capacity to take four landing craft vehicles. Each of HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark's vehicle decks has the capacity for up to six Challenger 2 tanks or 30 armoured personnel carriers. The size of the ships company on board the two new aircraft carriers is expected to be between 600 and 800, expanding to as much as 1,400 with air squadron personnel and command staff embarked. Each of the two new aircraft carriers will be at least twice the size of the current Invincible-class carriers which they will replace and will be capable of embarking 48 multi-role fighters, as well as four maritime surveillance aircraft and six Merlin anti-submarine helicopters. << -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Commission pennant mounting Attached is a comment from a volunteer of the ship model repair and maintenance group at the U.S. Naval Academy Museum. It makes sense to me, and I have amended my notes accordingly. >> Interesting. My guess is that the pig stick would be considerably longer than 3 inches and held more substantially than with just a couple of screws. Note that the pig stick was for either the commission pennant or the personal flag of a flag officer. The latter would be at least the size of a signal flag, giving a hoist of about 2 feet. In a stiff breeze, that would offer quite a bit of resistance. << -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Math Mathiasen" Subject: Re: Merchant Ship Logos All the Companies you mention are no longer in business. U.S. Lines - bankrupt, Moore-Mac. now operates tankers and is located in Conn., Lykes was bought by Canadians, but ws headquartered in Tampa, may still be there. I think you would have to make your own. The new owners may be able to provide pictures for you to have a reference -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Re: Commissioning Pennants Duane Fowler's comments about the apparent size of Commissioning Pennants in small scale are well taken. But to me, even using a bit of thread to represent the Pennant is part of the challenge which is evidence of attention to detail. As Archie Bunker used to say, "Whatever!", which in turn is a contraction of what the Hippies of the 60s and 70s used to say, i.e. "Whatever turns you on". AM Norfolk Tour??? Wont work...been there The bus tour is pretty pathetic, and probably will be enforced by a no photography law as it actually transits the base---last I heard it was totally suspended anyway, and its a moving platform that starts far from the carrier piers and is not worth a dime. There are no AM Harbor Tours via the Carrie B or other boats. At Norfolk, the morning light is useless anyway from the water as you are shooting into the sun. PM tours, with the lowering light, bathes the the ships nicely at the piers as the piers run east and west.. If nothing gets blown up on your July 4th, perhaps security restrictions may be somewhat relaxed a bit more by then. John Sheridan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Edward F Grune" Subject: IPMS Get-together on Friday Night? James Corley posted informaton regarding the IPMS Get Together/Harbor Tour - including the Friday night date. Let me throw a monkey-wrench into the works early on; before the date gets cast in Jello. Friday night will be judging. This will disqualify myself and several others including: Jon Warneke, Mike "the China Clipper" Quan, and Hugh Letterly. Rusty White has not committed to attend the get-together, is the head ship judge. These are judges that I know of -- there may be more. I'd opt for a lunch-time gathering, preferably around the pool. That way we'll be within site of some pleasant views - like it was in Orlando.
