Regards, Shane & Lorna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Dave Shirlaw Subject: Re: Merchant Ship Colors and House Logos The best reference is the classic "Browns Flags and Funnels" which should be still available. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Steve Sobieralski Subject: Re: Corsair I believe the old ITC kit is actually the Corsair II, a similar looking but different ship from the Corsair/USS Gloucester. In 1930 Morgan sold Corsair II to the US Coast and Geodetic Survey - which became part of NOAA - and she became the USC&GSS Oceanographer. There is a picture of her here: http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/ships/ship0227.htm Steve Sobieralski -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Devin Subject: Re: Oil canning How about simulating this with paint? Dark gray (or appropriate hull color) on the hull frame lines, and then lighter in the middle. This is similiar to what the aircraft modelers do for paneling weathering. True, no actual depression, but the color contrast will provide the illusion. Check the out-of-print section. Also some British funnel markings and house flags from ca 1913 can be found at: http://www.ukans.edu/~kansite/ww_one/naval/s300000.htm Michael London -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Larry Evans" Subject: Re: Gakken Books Andrew, This is an excellent series of reference books. Each issue deals with particular ship class. Including numerous B/W photos of the ship(s), line drawings, as well as excellent 1/100 &/or 1/200 scale models of the subject. Some books also include plans. 10 x 71/2 size is much easier to use than the smaller Kojinisha, (also a very nice set of reference books) line. I would highly recommend any of them. Larry -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Gmshoda@cs.com Subject: Re: The Observer's Book of Ships This is a tiny book. I had one as a boy, still have my copy & loved it. It gives a general overview of ships. There are 6 color plates interspersed throughout the pocket book. There is a listing of the companies on page 22-31. There seems to be 107 companies listed with colors for the funnels, house flags, color of ventilators, topsides, and boo-toping. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: another British sub in Canadian service has problems On Tuesday a new blow for the use of ex British Subs in the Canadian Navy as HMS Ursula wihich is operating with Canadian crew under British command was returning to port after taking water during sea trials. The leak in the sub which will be re-named HMCS Corner Brook, involved a tube used to send marking equipment to the surface while the boat is submerged. oh well better to find it out now then later on, when the Candians have fully taken them over. Seems simple enough to fix -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: paulship37@aol.com Subject: Interesting item on eBay SMML members should take a look at this series of dozens of real one-of-a-kind photos taken by a CPO on HMAS Hobart over a period from 1936 (Abbysinian War) to 1942 (Singapore being bombed), ending with some Post war pics in Rabaul (sunken Jpn Ships) and Haifa (Jewish evacuation ships). He was a fair photographer and some of the photos are the type that modelers love, this one is particularly nice. HMS Woolwich, a repair ship in camouflage, is being passed by a British sub in Alexandria Harbor 1941. Curious thing is, the sub is flying a PIRATE skull and crossbones flag as it returns from a patrol in the Med.(They are probably following proper naval etiquette in that they ARE flying it BELOW their Naval Ensign, not above....perhaps where the commissioning pennant would normally fly.) This CPO seems to have taken pictures every place he went. There is even a reflection of him in a glass case as he takes a picture of King Tutenkamen's exibit in an Egyptian Museum in 1936. There are some fabulous, unique, photos here that won't be seen again. You really should take the time to go through them if only to get a taste of what it was like for this sailor to go through an amazing sequence of Naval history. 1941 HMS Woolwich repair ship Alexandria http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2118943432 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Shane Subject: APMA site update The Australian Plastic Modeller's Assoc (APMA) site at: http://apma.org.au has been updated.
