Lets take a painting, say from that old Navy guy Donegan at NAVYDAZE. All a painting is, is an optical illusion. An artist make you think you see depth in the painting. A foreground and a background and everything in between is made by the artist to represent depth. Sooooo, you are right, I bet with a little masking and shading you could make it look like it is dented. Now if anyone is going to try it make sure keep a consistent shadow and highlight throughout one side and the there reverse on the other site. Sort of just imagine where the sun would be to cause such a shadowing effects of the dents Cheers, Mike @ NAVYDAZE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: annobon4@aol.com Subject: Delmarva directions Hi Guys I have a question for SMMLers who live on the Delmarva pennisula (Delaware,Maryland, and Virginia). I'm planning to attend the 2002 Nats. Since I'm close enough to drive. I've learned that I-95 has major road reconstruction by Baltimore and during the day traffic moves at snail's pace. How is Rt.13 compare? Last year I visited a family member who lives in Virginia and it appears that road construction was starting. I'm hopeing to drive down 13 across the Chespeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel then get on Rt.64 and then make a left for Rt.44 to the hotel. Any news would be appreciated and thanks in advance Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Edwparent@aol.com Subject: Corsair/ USS Gloucester Thanks to everyone for interest and help in finding info for modeling USS GLOUCESTER converted from the yacht CORSAIR. I read somewhere that there were three J.P.Morgan yachts called CORSAIR, each one larger than the previous. Which one was seized by the U.S.Government to become USS GLOUCESTER? I thought it was CORSAIR II but some SMMLies are finding otherwise. Any kits I find of CORSAIR will hopefully specify which of the three yachts are represented. Ed Parent -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: William Swan Subject: Merchant Ship Lettering and finding a supply of decals Its funny how questions morph into something else sometimes on the list. My original question was about finding source of supply for decals for the large lettering on the sides of C-3 merchant ships in the post World War II period. In particular I was looking for decals for United States Lines, Moore-McCormack Lines, etc. I am converting Revell Burleighs into their respective civilian counterparts. (1/400 scale) The responses morphed into sources of info on merchant flags, funnels and colors, all very useful but not pertinent. I have not been able to find anyone with decals like this in the model railroad world as one kind soul suggested even with the motherlode of rr stuff, Walthers. Perhaps someone can suggest a custom decal maker that they have worked with or some such source? William Swan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Richard Simpson Subject: Re: Facination with sinking ships >> Okay, this may just be me, but I have this morbid fascination with photos and film of ships sinking. I have a huge digital photo of an Adams class DDG taking the final plunge, a movie file of an Australian DD being torpedoed in a weapons test. Am I the only one that that has this affliction? :) << No, it is not just you Devin If you go to http://www.ausbg.org/links.html#photo you will find my collection of links to "sinking warship" pages. After all my involvement in modelling is to build models to sink (see www.ausbg.org/best_photos.html for that stuff) Regards Richard Simpson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
