Emails to them did get some information but as I live only 35 miles away I went there and was able to get some informaation on my subject - Hog Islanders- but not much. They had a complete set of plans but they were not in any order. I suggest you contact "The Floating Drydock." their web site is http://floatingdrydock.com and their email is drydock@floatingdrydock.com. They have many US plans. dave Fisher -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject: U.S. Navy - 100 Years of Destroyers http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/ships/destroyers/destroyercent.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Bruce Burden Subject: Re: US National Archive plans Hi Dan, >> I'm after a little help with accessing the US National Archive ships plans section. << The plans would be at the National Archives II building, in Maryland. The problem with trying to access the plans via the internet is that the plans will be in one of two forms: Boxes of microfilm, or linen sheets. Either way, it will be very difficult to tell the personnel at the Archives what you are looking for, specifically, and want copied. Plus the copy fees are _very_ high. The best way would be to visit the facility. I realize that is non-trivial, being from the UK, but you could easily spend a week there, because you could also visit the photo collection for photos of the LCI. Have you looked over the offerings from The Floating Drydock? I know Tom has spent a lot of time in the Archives, and may have a general plan booklet available. If you want to pursue the inquiries with the Archives, you need to figure out how to contact somebody on the 3rd floor (map room, I believe), which is where the plans indexes are kept, and ask them to look up LCI information in the index, and at least verify they have information available. Any thoughts about it's accuracy? Pieter Cornelissen Delft, The Netherlands -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: 1/72 scale Depth Charges I seem to recall that recently someone was asking about the availability of depth charges to 1/72 scale. These can be obtained from E Radestock, 2 Government Road, Wirral, CH47 2DB, U.K. (sorry no website or e-mail address as far as I am aware). Models with ballast weight (FT314) and without (FT310) are available - other scales are also available. Regards Les Brown -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Ralph Batykefer" Subject: C-3 Hull / USS Tangier Class seaplane tender Hello All, I have a friend who's grandfather served on the USS Tangier (AV-8). He wants to model her and so far I found that the hull was a C-3 and I know Revell made the Hawaiian Pilot in ~1/400 which was a C-3. Also the Revell USS Pine Island has some seaplane tending gear in the same scale with an aircraft. These may be kitbashed to make the Tangier. Does anyone have either of these two kits available? I saw the Pine Island on eBay but have not seen a Hawaiian Pilot. On the other hand... does anyone make a 1/700 Tangier Class model? How about a 1/700 C-3 hull/model? I know Jim Shirley had one, but any other providers? Thanks... IHS, Ralph -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Reynaga, Tim@EDD" Subject: micro modelling idiocy >> ...Approaching the lower (or is it the upper)limits of practicable modelling... Does anyone else have tales to tell of the absurd, sublime and ridiculous in the pursuit of excellence; or any tips on dealing with tiny but doabledetail... << Darshan, Yes, I guess we all go there sometimes: I just finished a model of my dad's old ship, the USCGC Taney. I had a photo of him aboard sitting on a bitt, so I thought it would be fun to include a tiny replica of him in the same pose on the model. I used one of the WEM 1/350 PE figures (which at 6mm high scale out to about 5 feet 11 inches in 1/303 scale). I bent it into the right pose, painted the blue dungarees, shambray shirt and white sailor cap to match the picture and set him on his bollard. When Dad first saw it he was delighted, but jokingly commented that the figure didn't have a beard like he did in the picture. I laughed with him, but secretly decided I'd have the last laugh when there would be a beard on that little Coastie... The next day I gently pried him from his perch on the model and set to work on that beard. A 1mm head isn't the easiest canvas to work on, but with the help of my smallest brush, some carefully thinned paint and and a couple of bottles of good Mexican beer to steady the hands, I eventually prevailed. The little bastard looked good! I called my wife over to witness my triumph-and promptly dropped the just finished figure on our persian rug. HORROR! Dropping to the floor like a rifleman in a firefight, I maniacally searched for the AWOL critter. Repeatedly scanning the hideously complex pattern of that rug, I began to regret those beers. As the search continued, I began to lose heart (I guess I could just do another figure...) Then, quite a distance from where I thought he had fallen, success! I reached out to pick him up: snagged! That #@*%&! carpet snapped him right out of my grasp and flung him to points unknown. Another search. Again, success...but what's this? Where's his head?! That #@*%&! carpet pulled his head off! I knew I'd never find a one milimeter round object in that carpet, but I thought I'd give it a quick look anyway...maybe I'd get lucky. Almost immediately I began to make the assessment; wouldn't it be simpler just to start again and do another figure than continue this stupid search? No, damnit! I'd worked a long time on that beard, and it looked good! So there I was, butt-up, head down with my penlight in my teeth and filled with a terrible resolve...I'd find it or else! I settled in for a long search when, after looking for only a few seconds, there it was in all its miniscule bearded glory! I exultantly recovered my prize, reattached it to his body, and aboard he went. When I next saw my father I proudly directed him to check out his now bearded replica. He squinted down at it, shifted his position a few times, smiled and said, "I'll take your word for it. I can't see well enough to tell if he has a beard or not." Scott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: joe.sus@att.net Subject: Re: Russian Sub Colors For Soviet subs, basic black was always in fashion. In the period you're asking about, red lead was also used. I have photos of SSs up to the Foxtrot (project 641) with the read lead. The forehead and chin sonar windows were silvery grey colored. The window above the WL was sometimes painted over. The waterline and the outlines of the windows, sonar domes, and even some or all of the flooding holes were often picked out in white pin stripe. The deck color often extended a few inches up the sides of adjacent vertical surfaces. If you're weathering, the underlying paint (red, black, grey) often reappeared in patches. I had one photo of a late 50s Whiskey in white, with forest green decks. Newer boats are almost always seen in black. Remember, if the boat is covered in tiles, paint wearing won't uncover the anti- fouling paint. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: USS Inchon LPH 12 Hi SMMLies, I just got home from a trip up the Delaware River to the Phily navy yard to see my old home LPH 12 USS Inchon. She was towed in Monday and they are prepping her to be used as a target. It's 10 days short of 19 years that stepped off her for the last time. When we got up close it was like I never left. Almost felt like I had to report aboard again. She looks somewhat old and tired but 32 years she is. I went along with another shipmate (Dave Nelson) who was aboard the same time as me, a good time we had too.
