Chen" Subject: Fujimi's Lexignton/Saratoga Hi all, Perhaps a topic well covered before.. For that I apologize.... Looking at the "old" Fujimi Saratoga/Lexignton carriers, even a non-expert (like me) would quickly realize how inaccurate they are!! I'd like to model Lexington as she apperaed at the Coral Sea battle. As for Saratoga, any period with decent info availalbe would be great!! (PE sets, ect.) ??? I have bought both models, ready to go, waiting for any info!!! Thank you all in advance Henry, Los Angeles, Calif -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Following discussions on SMML Henry Blecha, Here is more help for you - two web sites that usually has everything you need to keep up with the discussions on SMML: http://www.navsource.org/Archives/home.html http://www.hazegray.org/ http://www.warships1.com/ Those 3 web sites will give you all the pictures and information you need - the first, Navsource is my primary source for photos, etc. of US NAVY ship/crafts. Hope this helps. I have the book:Robert Dumas/Jean Guiglini: Les Cuirasses Francais de 23500 tonnes in very good condition!!! From D.Hartwig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: RDChesneau@aol.com Subject: Ermmmm..... A conundrum (if we have been here before, sorry but I missed it): Announced on the Hobby Link site as upcoming 1/700 Tamiya kits are 'BB Deutschland' (well now, might that be the predreadnought, or is that too much to hope for?) and 'BB Schupe' (sic). BB Schupe? Pardon? Does anyone have any insight here? By the way, on a different matter, I think 'oil-canning' might well be what we (British) call 'panting', which was awfully evident on, for example, the Leander class frigates of not so long ago. Yes, okay, I know - there is mileage for some humour here! Roger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: 1/350 scale Bollards and Fairleads I find that with many of the resin 1/350 scale kits available, the bollards and fairleads are frequently misformed or broken and hence I wish to replace them but find difficulty with producing a number of identical pairs for each model. I am aware that White Ensign produce some etched brass fairleads but is anyone aware of a source for replacement bollards (or should this be 'bollard pairs' as the ones I am particularly seeking tend to consist of two upright bollards on a common baseplate, typically as used by most navies today) - either white metal or resin would be equally acceptable. I also find that these items need replacing on plastic kits as when they are moulded to the deck they are actually too far from the deck edge because of the thickness of plastic used for the hull sides. My preference is to fit the railings first and then position the bollards & fairleads at their correct locations just inside the guardwires (I can then also ensure they are not fouled by the stantions). Any help/advice regarding sources or 'how to do it yourself' would be greatly appreciated. Regards Les Brown -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: Thanks NA USA Hi Thanks for the help in tracking down the LCI(L) plans and all the additional information. I'll let you know how I get on. Dan Taylor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: O'Connor Subject: Original Saratoga Scheme (early 50's) Saratoga and Forrestal both commissioned with yellow flight deck markings on dark blue-gray flight decks. Her # 60 was displayed at both fore and aft ends of the flight deck, and she had pretty simple landing pattern lines-a center line and two outside landing area markers, starting wide at the stern and narrowing as they proceeded forward. The elevator safety markings were probably yellow, but soon changed to that which we know today- red-orange and yellow mixed. Other deck markings were shown as very faint yellow lines, particularly a broken centerline marking from bow to just past the island, and the assist lines for the #1 &2 cats. Note also that both ships were commissioned with, I beleive, eight cross deck pendants (arrestor cables). This was a throwback to the axial-deck carriers, and once the navy got used to the idea that all those cables weren't necessary, four was the majic number. The markings all went to white on dark gray/black in about '59, when all USN carriers went to the newer scheme. The new deck landing outline pattern remained the same, only in white, for a short time, then went to a more familiar pattern similar to what we see today, but with a broken white cenetline. The elevator warning was definitely of the type we see today, or very similar (couldn't notice the difference on a galloping horse in 1/700 scale). Airwing combinations changed as rapidly as the technology of the jets being tested, bought and produced . Cutlasses("gutless"), Skyrays, Furies, Banshees, Demons, just to name a few, along with Skyraiders, A-3 Skywarriers, Trackers, HUP-3's, all appeared. The Crusader did not appear on the decks til about '61 or so- check references. If you need a specific cruise or date range, contact me off-list and I can try to find it for you, as I have it buried somewhere. Hope this helps -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Darren Subject: Re: HCtN - VCR Alert and DVDs >> Well that's fine about "Here Comes The Navy" but when will they ever put it on video or DVD? Come people who run the movie outfit, lets get with the program and put it out for us. I can name a dozen movies I've seen on the shelf and thought who would ever watch it but I guess someone does. so put out what we want, right? << Keith and others who want a movie on DVD, a suggestion. While looking for the Final Countdown on DVD I searched the AMAZON.com site and found it in the UK, not usable in my region. Not yet out in my region! I say WHY??? Anyway, Amazon had a page I could express my desire to get one on DVD and they claim to pass this info on to the industry so they can judge how popular a DVD will be and adjust their production schedule accordingly. I can't remember how to get there and I don't how well it works, still no Final Countdown on DVD in NA, but it seems to be a way to cast your vote for a movie on DVD. Check it out and lets see if it helps. "God's predictive": 'bog' means 'god'.....Is it possible that someone tried to translate BOGATYR with one of those computer translators? God's Prophet? However, I think the ship may have been named after the legendary bogatyr warriors. Ulrich Rudofsky -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Robert Mosher" Subject: Re: Imperial Russian Ship This business of translating names is always tough and I prefer to work directly from the original language than from someone's attempted translation and then have to backtrack to the original. BUT - in my copy of Linyeenie Korabli e Fregatii Russkovo Parusnovo Flota - I found an entry for Bozhiye Predvideniye, 58 guns, 1700-1712. The name clearly refers to scripture and probably should be more literally translated as "foreseen by God" or "foreseen of God" - suggesting to me that it referred possibly to Christ. It would probably need someone more familiar with Russian ecclesiastical language to give you a more precise explanation of the phrase's meaning and how to best translate it into another language. A working vacation >> So, what, nobody wants to respond to my query re: the get together? WHAT ARE WE DOING???? << The get together sounds like a great idea. However, I doubt that I can attend. This is going to be a real working vacation for me. Five meetings, two short (real short) speeches, judging, spend time with the convention chairman, and work at the 2003 National Convention table. In between I hope to get to the vendor's room and look at some models. If any of you guys see me in the crowd, PLEASE say hi. As I said, I can't attend the get-together, but I would love to put some faces to the names I read here. Me and my chairmen will be wearing bright yellow 2003 Convention shirts, so you won't be able to miss us. I kinda believe that the more people you get on the list, the less we will agree on hooking up where and when as everyone will have their own agendas and there really is gonna be so much to see and do...the model rooms, the vendors tables, back and forth, Wisconsin, Mariners Museum, Harbor tours, on and on. I would think that most of us want to see the real fighting navy and I had originally proposed a Harbor Tour, the 2 pm one which affords good afternoon shooting light for us for cameras....there are lulls in the tour where we can fraternize. I think the last place I wanna end up is at the end of a long table in some bar where I will never get to meet the guys at the other end...ALWAYS works out that way you talk with the five guys closest to you and never with the chaps further on down. A mutual interest tour I think would be better and if you guys dont wanna do that, then I will simply head out there on my own. RD Bean -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Things to do at VA Beach Hi SMMLies, The only thing I remember doing at VA when I was a sailor was go drinking and more drinking and pick up girls. But now that we have some responsibilities we can't spend our afternoon out on liberty call drinking. The wives just won't have it. Hop in the car and go to the Mariners' Museum in Newport News. It should be about 20 miles north, just look at your map. You can't miss it, they have a big old prop out front on the lawn that came from the battleship South Dakota BB 57.
