Poore" Subject: HP Carrier Kits This may have been covered already, and if so I apologize. Has anyone laid hands on the new HP kits of the WWII British aircraft carriers? Any thoughts on quality, accuracy, etc? Just curious, as I'm a sucker for WWII carriers. Thanks, Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "emergency" Subject: Search Skywave Items Hi All, have anyone a Idea who I can find the follow Kits. I am considering buying a Derfflinger, and am quite prepared to scratchbuild a lot of the small parts. Inaccuracies though should be fairly small or easily fixed....I notice a fair price difference (about 15 to 20 US$) so I imagine one might have photo-etch parts with it, or a higher level of accuracy/casting. << The Derfflinger kit is absolutely beautiful. I am unable to compare the accuracy of the measurements but I can tell you that the kit is extremely well executed. The castings generally are gorgeous. The superstructure parts require VERY little preparation before assembly as they are cast in extremely thin wafers that practically fall off. I have purchased and built a number of resin kits and very, very few approach the level of quality of these WSW kits. I cannot say the same for the HP kits that I have purchased. Most have had very thick wafers that require lots of filing and sanding and I am not that crazy about some the the castings as a whole. I don't believe that you will be unsatisfied with the WSW kit in the least. William Swan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: David Miller Subject: The bib I have thought about using "the bib" to prevent loosing parts. However, I imagine scenarios where I absentmindedly stand up and choke myself, or I pull the work table over as I go to answer the phone. I suppose the Velcro does not hold THAT tight. Dave Miller Macomb, IL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Sab1156@aol.com Subject: Re: Lutzow, Derfflinger kits To Timothy Dike: The WSW models of the german battlecruisers are indeed better than the HP models, but also more expensive! Best Regards Detlef ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Bill Livingston" Subject: Re: New Photoetch Set John Snyder, Hi John, Can you give us any more details of the Hood 1:400 WEM photoetch set yet? Date of availability and a list of what will be on there? Secondly, any further news on the 5" 38 calibre resin replacements for the Tamiya Fletcher class? All the best, Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Reynaga, Tim@EDD" Subject: bibless floor searches >> ...I have cut the amount of time crawiling around on floor by about 80 per cent...I will now attempt to spread the bib gospel!!! << My own method of handling lost parts is a bit lower tech: if my daughters (ages six and seven) are present when I drop something, I show them a duplicate and set them to looking for it on hands and knees alongside me. In order to put them in the proper frame of mind I have a standing offer of an ice cream as the reward for the one finding it first. Having both excellent eyesight and the fierce competetiveness natural among females, they have become quite skilled at this. I have only to shout "Lost part!" and they're on it in a flash. If they're around I always recover the part. Oddly, neither seems to have noticed that we all end up getting ice cream no matter who actually finds it. The system has considerably reduced my floor time, although I am becoming rather fat... Tim Reynaga ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Bruno Gire" Subject: Cousteau's Calypso: a new hope Two months ago, I sent sad news about J-Y Cousteau former research ship Calypso. Pictures of the ship can be seen on SM site. Yesterday, French media said the ship would be soon taken out of the water, put on a barge and ferried accross the Atlantic to the port of New Rochelle, where she would be repaired and opened to the public. This apparently put the end with any "Cousteau museum" in the French port of La Rochelle, but is opening something interesting in the USA. May be some SMMLies, there, could get more informations... Bruno Gire Bordeaux, France ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Pieter Cornelissen Subject: Re: Lutzow, Derfflinger kits On steelnavy.com you can find reviews of both WSW's Derfflinger and Lutzow. I have not seen these kits, but I do have experience with both WSW and HP kits of the same period (WSW Petropavlovsk and Ferdinand Max, HP Invincible). Both companies tend to have a resin only policy and rather vague instructions but there is a huge difference in quality. WSW kits are more accurate (associate label B-Resina can be another matter), easier to work with and have finer and sharper cast details. If a subject is available from both HP and WSW I strongly advice you to buy the WSW kit. I think it's case of coindence. In life there is thing called destiny. It involves a series of events that combine and produce a result. I haven't heard anything about the HMS Illustrious. Consider it historical. You have photos and the experience of having visited the Nottingham. Today I wish my camera had worked but in 1976 the then new HMS Sheffield D-80 came to Phillie for a port of call. I got to see it and it got sunk in the Falklands 6 yrs later.
